Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I have had the same issue as everyone, pulled my hair out trying to figure out how to fix it.  Tried everything suggested and nothing worked until II messed with the DNS. I show the easy 3 steps in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYeYLUn9nj0

Try it and see if it helps you as well.

I have experienced very slow wi-fi connection on my Apple i-Pad 3. The download speed was 0.03. The router etc in the house is OK as my wife's i-Pad Air has good download speeds. This problem existed before iOS8. I tried a remedy suggested on Apple Communities viz re-set Network Settings on the i-Pad. it meant I had to e-input my rouer connection passowrd, but otherwise no problem. Immediately after this the download speed was 10.18. Brilliant. Upload speed the same before and after Network re-set. But will it last?

My next step will be to try to download iOs 8.0.2.

    Hey guys,

    It's me again,

Updated my OS to 8.0.2 after the catastrophic 8.0 update that rendered my phone useless.

I tried the google DNS thing, didn't work,

Tried resetting all network settings with no use.

Finally, I saw a few posts recommending that you reset your entire settings, disable WIFI networking under Privacy>location services then rebooting.

Did that, been 20mins, so far all good. let's see...

    OK, my morning update....

    It's b a a c k...

After a full reinstall, fresh setup, wifi changes...  It worked for about 5 hours correctly.

Now, on iOS 8.0.2   Back to the same problems.

Today's fix (and it is working)...  I turned off the 5ghz completely on my router.

The iPad Mini Retina is only connecting on 2.4ghz and seems to be working.   So much for MIMO...

Waiting patiently for a fix, Apple!

After I got used to that everything is working with Google DNS I tried switch back my default DNS on all 5 devices. All ios devices have been up for 10 hours without any problem.

    My current settings are:

    1. ios Location service / Wifi networking OFF

    Apple router:

    2. Reset all settings and configure as new

    3. Only WPA2 encryption

    4. Both 2,4 (channel 3) and 5GHz (channel 48) are running on manual mode.

Restart all devices, router and forget network and enter passkey again.

Compared to 7.1.2 with 8.0.2 I just changed 5GHz from channel 36 to 48 and encryption to just WPA2

Not sure but seems that 8.0.2 solved something what 8.0 brought out but not all the wifi problems aren't gone.

This is completely ridiculous, IOS 8 (even 8.0.2) is completely bug ridden and without wifi completely unusable.

brand new iPad air, worked fine, figured i would update it to latest software, all seems fine and then you actually try to use it and BANG no wifi for you sir,

tried various suggestions (restored 3 or 4 times) finally upon nearly giving up someone suggests turning off bluetooth and… it seems to be working WTAF?

sort it out apple, your product is useless without the internet.

if you refuse to accept that your latest software is utter trash then at least allow downgrading so we can all go back to the version that actually works.

I did a fresh full install of iOS 8.0.2 from itunes on my laptop last night.  A real pain to reinstall all of my apps, but if it fixes the video streaming/WiFi inconsistency, it's worth the trouble.  So far, WiFi is functioning as normal, but I will update at the day goes along.  One thing that did happen differently as well is that all of a sudden I have the option for the photo library (beta) now where I didn't on any of my updated devices previously.  Afraid to turn it on though!  Probably going to have to fresh install my 5s as well because the WiFi is just switching to LTE or 3G at random now.  I agree with all of the previous posts as well wondering why Apple hasn't officially acknowledged the WiFi issue.  We shouldn't have to be trying "fixes" for a major device function to work properly.  Anyway, I will test out the connectivity as the day progresses.

On my 5s it doesn't drop or struggle to pickup but the throughout inexplicably drops right off to a quarter of normal for no good reason Unless I reboot phone. Real annoyance and does it in both my access points at home. Also AirPlay is slow to pickup quite often and accessing my NAS drive in my cloud (wd app) shows long pauses loading folders but it's fine if I access on cellular. The DNS fix won't fix AirPlay or that issue. I don't think it's the answer. I tried the wifi networking thing under system services but it seemed to make zero difference. I wonder if disabling that has other detrimental repercussions. What exactly does it do. In any event apple have messed up, the new wifi implementation is upsetting many devices - some people are lucky as maybe the wifi chipsets are different in some phones but this needs a fix. Apples updates these says are a Russian roulette - not just ios but they don't seem to test anything now including iTunes uodates

Ok, back again for the third time.

Resetting network settings and disabling WIFI networking under Location services only worked for a short while. now back to the same problem.

The looping circle and then finally it times out. I gotta refresh 30000times for it to work. Full WIFI signal on the screen.

I can't use any VOIP apps, social media without triple posting, this is really sad, I've gotten to the point where I am considering retiring the device.

I kinda have lost faith in having Apple even acknowledge the problem.

My 5s suddenly started dropping packets like crazy.  2.4 GHz network disappeared and 5 Ghz kept disconnecting.  When connected I was getting 6 Mpbs down and 3 up.  Rebooted my 5s and everything started working again and got 29 Mbps down and 11 Mbps up on 5 Ghz channel.

Getting annoying having to reboot periodically to keep a stable network connection.

I've already restored iOS 8, reset network settings and reset all settings.  I'm now on iOS 8.0.2 and nothing has changed.

For what it's worth, over at bugreport.apple.com, there's a Wifi logging profile you can install which is supposed to log Wifi.  When you hit the problem, you sync with iTunes to grab the log and then you can submit a bug with Apple.  I'm doing that as soon as the problem comes back.  Since it requires a reboot to activate logging, it needs to be done before the problem occurs.
