Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Apple seems to be allowing the current release 8.0.2 and the prior release 8.0.0 to be downloaded.  See this page:

Philip, I posted my packet capture due to the fact that the only thing I see is the capture is the DNS entries. Never said it was DNS and in fact, I agree with you that is is NOT a DNS issue at all since ping times have nothing to do with DNS. I too have my own DNS server at the office and no difference there.  "No Difference" meaning that I'm not having the issue at home or at my office.  I go back to my original posts that must have something to do with the iOS 8 code or driver.  I've included ping tests from both my Windows 8.1 laptop and iPad Air, both sitting side-by-side on the same Wi-Fi network and like you state, there is erratic latency on the iPad Air.  I don't think Apple has a clue and people like you and I are troubleshooting for the purposes of what?  This type of troubleshooting I get paid for .

When you release an update without thinking, you deserve to lose billions of dollars. The IOS 8 update is too large to even fit on most iphones before iphone 5, *** were you thinking apple? Better fix it quick!

Yes I have the same problem wifi freezing problem, it first manifested itself after loading the developer version on my iPad Air. I can surf quite happily although sluggish then the wifi just freezes. I have to switch airplane mode on and off to get it all to work.

current have ios 8.02 loaded but still have the same issues....streaming from YouTube or a TV channel is appalling

my other iPad air with ios7 works fine......thanks again Apple for another monumental cockup.

    lets get this sorted

The bit about DNS wasn't aimed at you :-)

Those look a lot like my results.

SInce it's unlikely that the iPad has the property of slowing radio waves in its vicinity, and the AP works ok with other devices, DNS is not involved in IP address resolution (but MAC address lookup may be) we are left with the problem being internal. HW was fine before the upgrade, on my device, on yours and on apparently many others, so logically, it's the new software.

Apple can't be unaware, even only because many of the personal devices employees own must have the same problem.

The real problem is almost certainly that they have to get the stuff working that they spent millions advertising.

WIth that out of the way, I would expect this issue to have a high priority.

The next one needs to be the problem with capitalization when I type here!!! It's getting really annoying.

I  too spend a lot of time sorting out things like this for my day job, which is why I don't want to be doing it in my own time! Especially when I have no access to the system to do more than look at the symptoms. Frustrating!

Updated to 8.0.2 makes absolutely no difference, in fact wifi speed has got drastically worse.

ping times to my BT hub are 400ms on average. The router is about 3ft away as I type this, not in the USA which would explain the ping times.

speed test says i now have a 5mbs download on the iPad, iPhone 55mbps.

Theres something massively at fault with the ip stack in certain scenarios with IOS8. I'm getting better speed from the iPad disabling wifi altogether and tethering it to my iPhone on 4g!!!!

The bug reporting tool shows you how to gather iPad logs. Look for the wifi row. Connect to itunes to pull the log.  I believe the basic developer accounts are free and you will be able to submit a bug report.

Here are the places to report bugs:

    Get an account at

http://developer.apple.com/  then submit a bug report to http://bugreporter.apple.com/

    Once on the bugreporter page,

       -- click on New icon

-- See if you need to attach a log file or log files, clicking on Show instructions for gathering logs.  Scroll down to find the area or application that matches the problem.

       -- etc.

    Developers:

    "Submitting Bugs and Feedback

Your feedback goes a long way towards making our products even better. With Apple Bug Reporter, you can submit bug reports or request enhancements to APIs and developer tools."

    I agree with you.

iOS 8.0.2 doesn't fix wifi freezing problems.

    We need an iOS 8.0.3

Wifi freezing problem happens often after waking from lock, even sometimes when I am using the iPhone.

I would like to let everyone know I enabled WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) setting on my 5Ghz network (Netgear Night Hawk R7000), this setting was under the QoS settings and now the WIFI seems to be working perfect i'm back to getting 60.11Mbps Down and 11.95up, the signal has been consistent for sometime now!  This is on my Iphone 6Plus. I hope this helps!

Received my new iPhone 6 yesterday and downloaded the iOS 8.02 on it as well as two ipad 4's and a iPhone 5.  Since downloading the 8.02 fix everything is working as it should.  I've not ever had the connectivity issues, mostly Safari stalling out but even that appears to be working as it should.  Could I possibly be that lucky, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  I have friends in Texas that have not had any of the issues either.  What's up with that?  Some have horrible problems and yet others very few if any - so odd!  I'm loving my new gold iphone 6 and thankful after two days, it's still working fine.

    Hi guys

Perhaps you should try these steps (it works for me so far, using iphone 5s & ios 8.0.2):

    Turn on airplane mode

Turn on wifi only and join network

Test to see if the internet is running smoothly

Then turn off airplane mode to enable cellular again

    good luck!

Asus RT-N66U router 2.4 and 5GHz, everything worked fine with iPhone 5s and iPad Air before iOS 8, now 8.02

Wi-Fi is intermittent, AirPlay to Apple TV not working properly either, slow, not connecting.

    Apple TV is on EtherNet.

Don't think it's isolated to iPad Air but not 100% sure.

Reset Apple TV a couple times, unplugged power cord.

Power cycled cable modem and router a couple times, internet is just fine on my wired computers.
Restored iPAD but that didn't help either.

Reset Network settings a couple times on iPad, no cure.

Not happy with Apple, that's crazy how much times it takes to troubleshoot.

Hoping something will be released by Apple addressing the issue

Im in the same predicament. I followed a link somebody put up on page 3 and I was able to download all the files and firmware for ios 7.1.2 to my computer, but I have yet to figure out how to install it on my phone.

same problem here with wifi either dropping or not transferring any data.

I deactivated GPS / location services completely (not just for Wifi) and wifi is now working fine.
