Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Changing DNS to 8.8.8.8 in Wifi settings on iPad helped in my case.

    8.8.8.8 is Google DNS server.

    Good explanation video here.

Not really sure if changing DNS to 8.8.8.8 helped much either, tried to get email and browse Safari was very very slow.
Wi-Fi Speedtest on iPad is great overall, only Ping is 64ms, usually around 20ms...

having same issue: wifi drops constantly on latest iPad after ios8 upgrade.  Off/On wifi every few seconds, even just feet away from AP.    iPad is now junk.  Wifi working fine on non-apple devices.  Zero iPad wifi problems for 2 years prior to ios8.

this is really a disgrace and a reason they should allow a downgrade to 7.1.2

your ipad worked fine until you updated it,... there is no going back to the perfectly good version of iOS which our devices ran fine on.  Chances are they will find and fix it but in the mean time we are stuck with what we got.. There are over 500 users now just in this forum topic having the same issue, hopefully apple takes note.

Absolutely same problem on a brand new iPhone 6. Other devices at home (iPad Air, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S) running iOS8 have wifi transfer up to 30 Mbps, erratic connection on iPhone 6, from 0.1 Mbps (Up/down) to 17Mbps. Reset connection parameters didn't help. Would be good if Apple could at least acknowledge the issue.

OK, now I really feel like an idiot. I'm posting this in case there are others like me who sort of know the basics, but get lost in conversation about DNS, packets, connection parameters, pings, etc.  I knew enough to reset the router and did that when I lost the wireless connection after downloading iOS8. Tried some of the other things mentioned here too, like going to settings and tweaking this and that thing, but none of them worked. Yesterday my daughter noticed her Kindle wouldn't connect to the wireless network either. I did the usual -- went to settings, found the network, entered the password, etc. -- but the Kindle wouldn't connect either. Hmmmmm. Reset the router. Nothing. Decided to try resetting the modem and voila! In about 20 seconds, every device in my house found the network. Two iPhones, two iPads, one Kindle and a Surface tablet. Not suggesting that'll help anybody else, but I'm up and running as usual.

I'm pretty sure resetting the modem (power cycle) and then re-booting the router is what most here tried first, didn't help a bit in my case...

What seems to work for me to get Internet back is to turn Airplane mode on, then off.

    Not a solution...

My last post was removed from this forum with this comment:

"We removed your post Re: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems because it contained a poll or a petition. We understand wanting to share experiences, but these forums are meant for technical questions that can be answered by the community."

The problem is that the community has wasted thousands of man hours trying to solve a technical problem that can only be solved by Apple and which has not even been acknowledged by Apple.  All I ask is that someone at Apple tell us that they see the problem and are working on it.

In the meantime, millions of users of iDevices are being inconvenienced and turned off Apple products.

i had a similar situation. I'm almost certain that the root cause of the connection problems in my Wi-Fi network were caused by my iPad after I upgraded to iOS 8. No problems before the upgrade, unusable network after the upgrade. I had to reset the access point and modem to get any kind of speed to the network. I disabled Wi-Fi on the iPad and have had no problems with other devices since. The iPad loses 3G connectivity every couple hours (also a problem introduced by iOS 8), but that is a topic of another thread.

I'm somewhat frustrated by the posts' describing different workarounds involving routers, modems and other gear. First of all, based on my own experience, the fixes do not provide a lasting solution, and the symptoms are likely to return. If no one knows the root cause, these actions are just rain dances. The issues emanate from iOS 8 devices. That's the only logical conclusion I can arrive at with the evidence I have.

Agree. Hopefully this is not going to end like the awful Photostream disaster, the only solution that worked was switching to Dropbox.

Love my Apple products but they probably should focus on their core audience, less on iWatch or Keynote presentations...

We are also having a serious Wi-Fi connection problem since iOS 8.

My husband updated to iOS 8 on his iPad approx a week ago.  His iPad was working fine immediately before the update.  He has not been able to connect to Internet since.   Just the never ending spinning wheel.

My iPad and my daughter's iPhone have NOT been updated to iOS 8, and are still connecting to our Wi-Fi & working just fine.   Our non-Apple devices all connect to our Wi-Fi just fine.

We are not tech savvy people, but clearly the issue is iOS 8.   Since his iPad is Wi-Fi only, it is now completely worthless.

    Sad and frustrated

I do the same thing. Not perfect but a quick solution to the freezing wifi.

Still waiting for an fix from Apple.
