Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Yes many of the fixes are only temporary I think. I am pleased the DNS fix helps some but I am finding things like intra network activities slow such as browsing NAS drives and AirPlay slow to pickup too and no amount of DNS tweaking will help that. Bizarrely even though AirPlay is slow to pick up it always runs fast and reliable streaming etc once it's up. What's clear is the wifi issue is not specific to a particular device as people are struggling with iPhones and ipads of varying generations. Clearly certain wifi chipsets (which do tend to vary across devices) are not playing nice with ios 8. Some are lucky that whatever chipset they have in their device works well with the ios 8 wifi driver. In my own scenario my older ipad third gen seems pretty stable with ios 8 wifi. Consistent speeds and AirPlay instant. Whilst the iPhone 5s I have glitches, speedtest.net is erratic, either really slow or I can try a minute later and it's full speed, it's on the 5s too that AirPlay takes a while to show up against instant on the iPad. On ios 7 I had no such dramas. It's clearly ios 8' my wife's original iPad on ios 5.1.1 is infinitely better on wifi performance. I remember ios 6 threw up some wifi issues but not nearly as bad as ios 8, Apple needs to pull their fingers out. Surely their own employees must be seeing glitches. It's poor QA testing, and they cannot pretend there is no issue. Like many others I have reset modem and router several times to no effect. Everything in my network runs well across many devices from tablets to laptops. The on,y thing that cannot cope is the iPhone 5s running iOS 8!

You should be able to connect to the Internet after resetting the network settings on the iPad.

I'd reboot modem then router as well, probably forget your wifi on the iPad, then reconnect.

Nor being able to connect to the internet at all seems strange.

Update: fresh install of 8.0.2 on iPad Air did not work. Was fine for a few hours then streaming went spotty again. Can't even connect to 5ghz channel at times. Have to reset network settings to get any decent streaming to work and only for a little while. IPad 3 running 7.1.2 streams flawlessly with no drops in streaming speed at all. Dish Anywhere streaming hits the max speed and doesn't falter with iOS 7 iPad 3. My devices are the only ones "upgraded" (and I use that term lightly) to iOS 8. My wife's and daughter's iPhones will definitely remain iOS 7 for now. Apple, if you can't fix this soon PLZ give me iOS 7 back!

    I've got IPhone 5S.

I got back to iOS 7.1.2 after having iOS 8 for couple days. My data usage plan.... you know.

And now I'm affraid to upgrade to iOS 8.0.2. Just don't want to spend money without reason.

I read a lot about changing DNS, reset moden, router etc.

But I think it should not be like that.

If you go to mall, or to McDonnalds, will you ask them to reset router or to change some

    settings just for you?

It should work without changing any settings at all.

And when it comes about airplane mode On/Off-What if someone want's to call you?

    I will wait.

I agree and wish I would have waited as well. Very good points about asking businesses to reset their hardware to accommodate your ios 8 device

Just adding another voice to the issue here.  Two IPad's in my house, a brand new IPad Mini and an IPad2.  Myself and the fiance both have been frustrated and cursing at our IPad's the last 48 hours as they consistently are dropping connection and experiencing slow connections since updating to 8.0.2.  Hope this issue gets fixed.

iOS 8.0.2 no change in wifi for me on my iPad Air

since iOS 8 5 GHz wifi useless - join network, works for awhile, the have to disconnect and reconnect, the good for a while, then repeat, repeat, repeat ....

2.4 GHz band works ok for my iPad air.

5 GHz works just fine for all my other devices - iphone 6, MBP, ipad 4th gen, iMac

    Apple, Please fix!

I'm still having the same issue, despite installing 8.0.3.  I bought the iPhone 6 and have to reboot it nearly every hour because it still loses wifi connectivity.  I also get a notification a couple of times a day that says, "Unable To Download Item", though I have not attempted to download anything since the 8.0.3 update.  Still not fixed.  Still frustrated.  Still mad.

Don't think so, must have been a typo. Probably not everybody here being perfect either just like iOS :-)

Ah ok. Thanks. Thought I was missing something or it was yet another horrendous ios 8 bug not notifying of latest available software!

Nah. No progress and the wifi (and cellular) problems on my iPad 2 3G persist. I think the we are just too fatigued to keep posting. What is the talk about 8.03? I just cheked the available updates and the latest one is still 8.02.

Sorry about that...I made a typo.   I read somewhere that an 8.03 "will probably arrive" (this was opinion, not fact) and I've had 8.0.3 on the brain ever since.  I did in fact mean to say that I'm on 8.0.2.  My bad.
