Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

    Apple is the new Microsoft.

Ignore and hope the issue (or the users) just go away.

I'm very frustrated right now at the lack of response.

I'd like to know if someone had success by completely setting up the iPad Air as a new device?

I did a fresh install of 8.0.2 in my Air and I am still having problems with the WiFi.  It was decent for about 24 hours or so and then went back to spotty connections.  Download speeds go from 50Mbps down to .5 Mbps intermittently and sometimes drops the connection altogether.  I have been leaving feedback to Apple almost every day to try and help get some kind of ball rolling, but, of course, no response.  iPad 3 running 7.2.1 works flawlessly on the same network, no connection drops or speed drops for that matter. I primarily use my iPad Air for streaming and catching up on shows and games I miss and it's been a nightmare.

    Not good.

Another question. Curious: Did you try on a different Wi-Fi?

Update - I opened a case with Apple this afternoon and spent quite a bit of time doing some troubleshooting on the three iPads in the house.  Long story short, the problem (at least for me) appears to be that IOS 8.2 has difficulty with 5G channels via wifi.  After many tests, restorals, etc - we can replicate that all works fine on 2.4 ghz networks.  Changing back to the 5G is where things start to go wonky.

They have a case opened and will be escalated to their engineers.  Would recommend that everyone take the time to open a case with them to make sure that they get the message.

Yes. Rebooted my home WiFi many times, no improvement. I tried it on the WiFi at my office, no improvement.  I tried it on a Target store public WiFi and had no improvement as well.  Those are the only networks I've tried so far and I haven't tried a network with no security settings or turned mine off for a bit to see if it helps.  I also never tried the DNS tweaks.

I am having problems getting my screens to close.  I can't close anything by bringing my fingers together.  I have to use the bottom button to switch programs.  Anyone else?

Somebody at Apple should be reading the forums with regards to the problems hundreds of people are having with their Apple devices since upgrading to the new IOS 8.0

    Don't count on it.

We can complain about Apple's business decisions, but these discussions are user to user talk about possible solutions.

Here are the places to report bugs:

    Get an account at

http://developer.apple.com/  then submit a bug report to http://bugreporter.apple.com/

    Once on the bugreporter page,

       -- click on New icon

-- See if you need to attach a log file or log files, clicking on Show instructions for gathering logs.  Scroll down to find the area or application that matches the problem.

       -- etc.

if no one at apple reads a post with 60000 views and 700 posts, which is HOT!!! And is hosted by apple, there is something wrong with that company. They have recognized other problems that are a lot less important than this one. And they can't recognize this and say something about it?

That may be right but outrageous if true...

I don't want an developer account nor do I want to be a bug reporter, I'm a customer.

Compare that with Asus. You simply click on 'chat' and they are really available and on top of their tech service. Love them for that, the routers are not perfect but that service!

With Apple you usually talk to somebody working at home not knowing more than you do...

Why is Apple not interested in moderating these forums?

IM sure they are. But they can't publicly accept such failure, this can become another antenna gate and a massive recall if they do. I'm sure they are working around the clock and hopping is not a hardware issue that will require them spend millions of dolars to replace the defective units. Or just can mean a big drop on their shares too. This is a huge issue.

Maybe. I probably shouldn't have updated that quickly...
I'm thinking a couple bits here or a byte and then it's all fine again. My iPad AIr is totally OK but that connection issue.

Now on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and so far not seen anything unusual.

I'm on a 50/3 Mbps cable and no issue getting there even with 2.4GHz.

Ping is slower for such. Before iOS 8: ~14-50, now always >64ms

Switching to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi helped in my case, no more disconnects or YouTube streaming interruptions.

I'm happy for the time being, 5GHz is an issue with iOS 8.

5GHz is far from being the only issue with iOS8. Even if it was, switching to 2.4GHz is not a viable option for many users.
