Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

It sounds like this problem is manifesting in different ways with different devices.  For me, I have 100% confirmed that my issue is with 5ghz wifi.  Tested the iPad thoroughly today across several AP's and had zero issues on 2.4ghz access points.  Toggling over to 5ghz instantly causes the problem to recur.

Hoping for a fix soon but at least I can use the device now.

I can confirm that, same with my iPad Air. 2.4Ghz is fine, I posted this before, however, who reads the complete thread...

I have an iPad air with 8.0.2, and I have the same issues. WiFi works a for bit, but then disconnects and reconnects after a minute or so. It's really really annoying.

It worked perfectly before updating so it has to be iOS 8. Oddly, it works just fine on my iPhone 6.
I have restored the iPad, reset network settings, turned off WiFi networking under system services, and I still have issues.
Right now I'm using 5ghz so I'll try to connect over 2.4 tonight. According to what I've read on this post, it seems to be a good temporary fix.
    Will post results later on.

WiFi on the 5GHz band has some funny usage rules for some of the channels. iOS 8 may not be implementing the rules correctly for those channels - mostly the ones below 149 that can only be autoselected because of said rules. I have an Airport Extreme ac and forced changed the channel it used from the autoselected one to channel 161. This seems to have solved the problem for me, for now – time will tell.

i have the same problem on my iPhone 5C, the WiFi connection very slow and sometimes its just disconnect

i'm on iOS 8.0.2 tried fresh install ( restore the iPhone and then set up as new) still doesn't work.

feel so dissapointed, and saw my friends iPhone 4S with iOS 8 and it was very laggy, they made older iPhone working like cheap android phone.

sluggish iOS 8, sometimes it crash and a lot of lags found. shame on you apple!

should've stick to iOS 7.1.2 really regret the upgrade. for those who use iPhone 5 and still on iOS 7 i suggest to don't upgrade your iOS.

Absolutely agreed and confirmed.  Just had a followup call with an Apple engineer and we moved my channel up to 161 - voila - problem solved!

Great solution for when you are travelling.  Did the engineer suggest that Apple were working on a long term solution?  One that works on all networks?

If changing to one of the 4 upper 5Ghz channels is a usable workaround, and so far it seems reliable to me, it means it is somewhat of a chance if a random access point will assign one of the problem channels. So far when I go to a random hotspot I get connected in the 2.4Ghz band which doesn't seem to have the problem. Autoselect can assign any of the 5Ghz channels but seems to like the under 149 ones the best in my experience (more channels there) and that seems to be the problem ones. It is also possible that the Airport Extreme ac has a software bug that is stimulated by iOS 8 and the fix may involve an update to the Airport. Hopefully with Apple engineering involved this additional information about channel selection may lead to a real fix.

Absolutely - I have to say that they were very responsive and have passed the findings up to their dev team.  The channel change is just a temporary workaround until they can get it sorted.

I Had a similar problem with my iPad mini, not staying connected and resetting network settings only worked for about 5-10 minutes. Eventually I turned off the 5.0ghz broadcast from my router and am only using 2.4ghz. My iPad now stays connected.

Very responsive is a relative thing.  This has been going on for two weeks now.  Have you seen the length of this thread?  All my iDevices connect most of the time.  I have just learned to wait patiently when the connection breaks.  It always comes back after a few minutes.

But, this is a bad bug that should never have got out.  And I don't consider two weeks to be very responsive.  Particularly, as Apple has not acknowledged the problem, let alone fixed it.  We, the users, have spent thousands of man hours experimenting and looking for solutions.  Perhaps Apple would like to compensate us for our efforts.

    Hey Guys.

I'm IPhone 5s user. Now with 7.1.2. I had the problems with iOS 8, so I did downgrade.

I sent a message to Apple Support twice. I was chatting with representative who was surprised with this issue (no comments).

    And still: No answer.

But did anyone of you trie to do diagnostic test provided by Apple Support?

I work for me now, cause I have 7.1.2.

But how it goes with 8?

PS. Sorry for mistakes. I'm not American.

Set my dual band router 5GHz to Channel 161 from Auto Channel resolves the slow Ping issue. So far so good!

Was ~60ms with 5GHz channel set on Auto, is below 20ms with channel 161. So far so good!

    However:

My router crashed and I had to power cycle modem and router...
Now again connected iPad using 5GHz band and channel 161, let's see what happens now...
