Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Switched back to 2.4GHz band on my iPad Air.
Reason: On 5GHz even with channel manually set to 161 the Youtube Videos on my iPad Air would go blurry (auto switch to lower resolution while playing) and also interrupt while playing. No such a thing on 2.4GHz band.
On the 2.4Ghz YouTube videos open immediately without hesitation.

For me at least I'll keep my iPad on the 2.4GHz band.
I like it actually, gives much better coverage...hoping there will be a fix eventually for the 5GHz band....

Set my 5ghz to channel 161 as well and everything is great so far! Definitely not a fix but at least I can stream at home again. I have not tried YouTube yet but Dish and fox sports are working nicely.  We will see how the next few hours progress.

I Had a similar problem with my iPad mini, not staying connected and resetting network settings only worked for about 5-10 minutes. Eventually I turned off the 5.0ghz broadcast from my router and am only using 2.4ghz. My iPad now stays connected.  I also had a problem on my iPhone 5 with safari not working (I use Chrome more so not as big of a problem) this was resolved by turning the iCloud sync off for safari.

Looks like we could be on the same plan but I'm in Canada. Shaw cable in my case with 50Mbps download and 3Mbps upload...

Apple this has been two weeks now and this issue is starting to drive me mad. My beloved iPad is becoming a source of complete frustration and my faith in your company and your services is fast diminishing.

How could you so quickly solve the 8.0.1 cellular issue yet have remained in complete silence over this issue? This is very damaging for your reputation. Tim Cook should be ashamed. Steve Jobs would be ashamed.

The Wi-Fi drop outs continue! Spoke to an AppleCare UK representative yesterday and advised that I had tried all the possible steps to resolve. He agreed and said it could only be down to hardware so best to get a replacement.

I honestly don't think it will resolve the issue but the problem is the advisor said I was the first one to report wifi issues so I don't think they are going to acknowledge any time soon!

What to do as my return date is Monday 6th and I'm on my third iPhone 6 Plus 64GB -

    1. Had yellow screen in bottom left hand corner and also dropped connection once ( 8.0)

    2. Had a yellow screen and decolouring across the whole screen (8.0)

    3. My current one - great screen but continuous Wi-Fi drop out issues (8.0.2)!!

Do you think its worth risking it for another replacement?!

Stick with the iPhone 6 Plus with the good screen.  My iPhone 5, iPad Air, iPad 3, and iPad Mini all worked perfectly with iOS 7.1.2 and all have problems with iOS 8 and 8.0.2.  The problems are intermittent and frustrating, but I can live with them until Apple fixes the problem.  My Macs continue to have no problems on my network.

This is clearly a bug in iOS 8 and needs to be fixed.  If this is the first your AppleCare rep has heard of it, give him the link to this thread.  These denials of a problem by Apple are irresponsible.  Unfortunately, the only alternatives are Google spyware (Android & Chrome) or Microsoft who also put out bad updates, but more regularly than Apple.

    Thanks for the advice.

Just wanted to confirm your iPhone 5, iPad Air, iPad 3, and iPad Mini are all having wifi issues, more specifically disconnecting and not being able to find networks and needing a reboot or a reset network settings to fix? And these were all perfect before on ios 7 and have 8.0.2 on?

Out of interst what router and band are you using?

    Thanks

I am having this problem with both my iPad and iPad mini. This has only been happening since I upgraded to iOS 8. My partner's iPad still uses iOS 7 and is absolutely fine. I had a support call with Apple today; the advisor told me that this problem is not at end and that the firmware is absolutely fine and it must be my problem. I explained that this has only been happening recently and asked him if he had any other reports of this happening - he said no he was unaware of anyone else having this problem. I pointed out that there are many people complaining of it and he said that's not true. He was entirely uninterested in helping and refused to acknowledge a bug. I asked if a new version of iOS would be coming out soon but he said no.

As I said, all my iDevices are having Wifi problems since updating to iOS 8.  I tried several of the fixes you could find earlier on this thread:

namely turning off Wi-Fi Networking and changing the DNS for my local Wifi network to Open DNS, 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, and resetting Network Settings.

This seems to have improved the reliability a bit but Wifi still cuts out periodically and usually comes back after a few minutes.  This is not a general Wifi fade as the indicator always indicates a good signal.  I originally surmised that it my be due to the MAC randomisation feature, but that has been disproved.

I now surmise that something in iOS 8 is not connecting properly with some chipsets in some routers.  In this thread, I have seen comments from people complaining with Apple Wifi routers as well as other brands.  I currently use an Asus RT N66U as my primary router, but also have an Airport Extreme.  I have not tried playing with channels as I have enough connectivity to get by and I expect a fix from Apple.

I have wasted hours on this problem and expect that if you add up all the people who have also wasted time on the issue, it would add up to thousands of man hours.  I do not have time to beta test for Apple.  That should have been done before the software was released.  Someone should be fired!  Email TC.

It is clear that just discussing these problems here at this forum is not helping us.  Apple does not care and they don't seem interested enough to fix this problem.  It will take time but I suggest that we all start calling Apple support and telling about the problems with IOS 8.0 and IOS 8.2.  If we do it once a day, maybe they will get tired and they will finally accept this problem is real.  Lets start calling them. NOW!!

That is a great suggestion.  I was in the same boat until I decided to engage Apple formally about the issue.  After a lot of testing, we determined:

    • 2.4gHz spectrum wifi worked perfectly
    • 5gHz spectrum was failing consistently
    • When my router was reconfigured to use a higher 5gHz channel (161), everything is working fine now.  This is across 3 iPads and 2 iPhone 5s devices that were originally dropping network connectivity consistently since upgrading to 8.2
    • Logs of all troubleshooting efforts have been passed to Engineering for resolution

I fully expect that a permanent fix will be forthcoming soon, however with the resolution provided, my devices are working perfectly fine until a permanent fix is released.  The more people who take positive action and open cases will help the cause - plus you may find that a good workaround may be presented that will make it a non-issue for you.

Well said. Apple basically broke what didn't need fixing, typical code tweaking just because they love change for the sake of change which is all iOS8 is. So annoyed with them. In your case the ASUS router is a top end router and should have NO problems. The problem lays squarely at the feet of apple and their useless update. We should not be their guinea pigs as iOS8 should be tested thoroughly before release. But they just want to have a new iOS rushed out to sell millions of phones as marketing ploy.

I have an older WNDR3700 netgear router but it's still a strong router. Plus I have a Draytek Vigor configured as an access point and the wifi glitches happen on both. Like you I dont have time to spend messing about with it all for hours on end. I also have enough connectivity to get by by inexplicable throughput drops to under a quarter of normal speed are frustrating as is the slowness to pick up airplay devices on the phone. It's a joke and someones head should roll. iOS8 is full of other anomalies of bugs which I won't bore everyone with here. It's been a disaster.

have you tried to turn off dual band broadcasting in your router?  Once I disabled the 5.0ghz band all my devices work fine

Yep, second update hasn't helped either.  It certinly isnt my ISP as all other gadgets are connecting fine.  The issue seems to be only with my iPad Air.  My iPhone 5c is more stable.

    'tis becoming extremely frustrating.

For the record I'm using a BT Home Hub 5 - Type A in the UK, but hotspots when out and about are losing connectivity also.
