Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Tried this but definitely not working.

How did you set your other 5GHz settings. Channel 161 didn't work out for me...

All I did was make sure firmware was current, change the channel to 161, and reboot my iPad Air.  Connection still strong when I left the house this morning.  I'll post another update again when I get home.  Connection seems to be OK with 2.4 at work. Sorry I can't help with 5g settings, I didn't change much.

    Note: I have a Netgear R6250

What happens if you set 5Ghz to auto-channel? Suggestions in other threads indicate that may be the trick. Whatever channel the router picks, then manually lock it in.

It's a shame that "Bendgate" has taken the media spotlight because "Wifigate" is real and there may have been quicker action already. Interestingly, I found comments that this bug existed in the GM and betas.

EEnough 'fiddling around' with settings and routers.........an earlier poster has the right idea, start calling/emailing/writing Apple. The more tangible complaints they receive the harder its going to be for Apple to say try this, that and the other thing . This is so frustrating, Genius Bar even said there's no problem with up date that hasn't already been addressed and to go home and fiddle with router settings or ....................Didn't have these problems before update ( just now noticed that spelling is also gone weird), but, what the heck, there's no problems with 8.anything.

THanks to to everyone trying so hard to help get this fixed here, but I really think the only way to get it done is to be sure that Apple knows how this update ISNT

WORKING is to call/write/email ,whatever  and leave that proverbial 'paper trail'.

The only channels you can lock in on the 5GHz band are the bottom 4 and the top 4. The middle channels are all dynamically allocated and because that is a radio band shared with other radio services such as Air Traffic  control radar, the access point must monitor and adapt to whatever is going on in its environment with the conflicting uses. I suspect that IOS 8 is not handling the changes that naturally may occur on the auto set channels in that range. The bottom 4 channels are not a good choice as they are low power and low range. That leaves only the 4 high channels as being usable. 161 is the highest that can be set on an Airport Extreme ac - 165 is also in that sub band but I don't think Apple stuff will work on that channel. 149, 153, 157 should also work if there is a problem with 161.

I have a Roku 3 that purports to work on the 5GHz band. I found it won't see the access point at all unless one of the 4 high channels is set. That indicates to me that it is somewhat complex to use the dynamic mid band sub channels and I think Apple when upgrading the IOS software to work with 802.11ac did it wrong. Obviously this needs to be fixed.

After I changed my AP to use 161, I've had absolutely no problems with connections on my iPad Air and iPhone 5s. Not to say this is a fix, just that it is working for me.

OK, here we go, I was OK on 2.4GHz but really wanted 5GHz to work as well with my iPad Air.

Look like channel 153 did it for me.

    Thanks!

    I was too fast!

5GHz channel 153 didn't work for me. Constant disconnects.

    2.4GHz works.

Me too!! iPad Mini Retina performed beautifully with IOS 7 but Wi-Fi performance in every iteration of IOS 8 just *****. Intermittently throughout the day whatever device I'm using (iPad Mini Retina, iPhone 5, iPod) and whatever app I'm using (Safari, Dolphin, Mail, Zite, Digg, etc.) everything is fine one minute and 10 seconds later all I get are spinning beachballs. I've tweaked network settings, rebooted and tried all the other "tweaks" and nothing works. IMHO IOS 8 isn't ready for prime time. I concur with the notion that everyone posting their experience/problem with IOS 8 will create the paper trail that'll help move the solution along .... ergo this post.

These problems have not gone away for me and 8.0.3 is not out yet according to my devices. Hopefully it will be soon.

MY list of problems are growing from wifi, to apps playing up safari crashes from time to time and resets my iPad.

I decided to ring Apple instead of waiting for them to read the forums. I was very disappointed the person said they new nothing about the problems listed here or the ones I was having.

She asked me if I just updated to ios8 or if I restored my phone first before updating. i said I just updated as I normally do. She said no no no, I really should restore my iPhone then update afterwards, "this is what I do" she went on to say. She said it because when people up date they some times get messages or phone calls during the update and it doesn't work properly. I told her I use airplane mode etc and has anyone else had problems she said I'm the only one. Later in the conversation I asked her if she had problems she said "no I don't have an iPhone" this contradicts what she said earlier she also said later "I have had a bunch of calls about this today" again contradicting what she said earlier.

Basically I don't think they acknowledge a problem

mean an while my internet keep dropping safari resets my device I can't stream to my to anymore the list goes on .....

Everyone should send a "tip" to these Apple news sites also in the hope that one of them will publish a post regarding our wifi issues.

My wifi continues to drop out every few minutes on all 4 of our devices since the iOS8 update and it's intolerable. For some reason the world and his dog is ignoring the issue so we need to get some publicity.

I have emailed the following sites links to these forums but to no avail. Maybe if enough of us do it they will sit up and pay us some attention. I'm sick of this issue being ignored. Right now I feel like requesting a refund for my 2x iPads and 2x iPhone 6's. According to UK law Apple have broken their agreement in selling me something that is not fit for purpose.

Look for either a contact page or "tip us" link. Let's try and get some attention and resolution to this problem as of right now my connected devices are very unconnected and mostly unusable.

As you can read some of the latest posts, Apple is not acknowledging this problem and if we don't take action we will continue to struggle with these phones and tablets that are useless with IOS 8.0 .  Lets make use of social media as well.  Please send a warning "Not to upgrade to IOS 8.0" to all your Facebook, linkedin, Tweeter, etc contacts.  Send the link to this forum as well and ask them to forward it to their contacts.  The more attention we get to the problem the better.  Same thing with your local newspapers.  Most of them have a technology section at least once a week.  Send to their writers and ask them to check this forum.  Lets take action and see if Apple finally starts paying attention and we get a solution that works, not IOS 8.2.  We need to take action now.
