Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I'm only curious since switching to 2.4GHz band on my dual band router helped with the Internet issues, did you try 2.4GHz Wi-Fi?

This is something very weird to me.  I received an email earlier today from somone claiming to be from AppleCare Engineering.  It said they noticed my post on the Apple discussion forums about WiFi issues and would like to get more information.  Seeing as how this thread is the only one I have posted to at Apple forums in quite a while, I was wondering if anyone else has received a similar email?

I just bought a used iPhone 5 with IOS 8 installed. It has the same wifi issues as many of the users had. The speed is very slow, and it shows full wifi signal strength, but couldn't connect to internet. I have an iPhone 4. I did some speed test side by side with IPhone 5, and iPhone 4 had the same speed as my laptop had, but iPhone 5 was almost nothing.

Apple team, please solve this issue!!!

    Hey Eyedoc17.

I received the same email. And someone from Apple was trying to call me in the evening. Unfortunately I was working.

It looks we have their attention now. Finally.

    I think it is good.

I will try to catch them tomorrow.

What about others? Did you get an email?

Same here, they called and also sent an email, I was busy but emailed back and fourth a couple times.

Basically told him that iOS 8.1 beta resolved the 5GHz issue for me. I'm back on 8.0.2.

I took my IPhone 4S into the Apple Store in Leicester as update took my wifi and Bluetooth out and they said there must have been an underlying problem and that the IOS 8 update, which searches the hardware before it updates would have shut it off, there was no problem with my phone at all, yet I was told that I would have to pay £159 as it wasn't in warranty, for a new handset and that it wasn't their responsibility to fix the problem as it wasn't purchased instore I should contact service provider. I didn't except this so they gave me a phone number for support. This phone call cost me £10 to talk to an automated voice that asked a lot of questions before asking for IMEI number and then proceeded to tell me that as it wasn't in warranty I would have to pay £25 before I could be connected to customer support, Apple cannot be trusted on any issue, my partner went into the store to buy an iPhone and asked about any new phone coming out, they said there wasn't any new iPhone coming out so he went on to buy the 4S, two weeks later the iPhone 5 was released!!!

SSo ios  8.1 is going to fix the wifi issues?  It would be nice if the cretin I messaged with at the customer service desk had known this.  No official reply from Apple has even acknowledged the update is a **** up. Let alone what, if anything, is being done to fix it.

You're implying that they lied. They did not. Apple (store) employees do not know what new products are going to be released until the day they are released. Only upper level Apple (corporate) employees have this information.

Yes they do, as do all phone shops that sell the iphones, they are given information on new phones coming out and are given aroundabout date for release

LOL, Anyone who has ever actually worked at a Apple store knows you are grossly mistaken, but believe whatever you want

Switching from 5GHz (n) to 2.4Ghz solved my Wifi issue with the iPad Air.

No issue with 5 GHz (ac) on my iPhone 6

    Router: Airport Extreme AC

My son is a manager of a phone shop and he knows weeks in advance as the stores have to be reorganised for it so why apple doesn't tell their employees is beyond me.

I'm in the UK and have also received this email this morning, if nothing else I'm slightly more reassured now that this shows they must be aware and are actually looking into it now.

I like to think that the kind of people they employ to develop these things know their stuff and will hopefully be able to fix it quickly.

I do believe they could have made things a lot easier by acknowledging the problem in the first place, not Apple's finest hour in my opinion leaving it so long like this with no comments or responses with so many having the issues and taking the time to report it.

I've yet to hear back from them but they may be preferring to deal with users in the US maybe with the time differences etc? which is fine.

I just hope they will be able to fix these issues soon and restore my faith in their products.
