Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

It sounds like something is going on perhaps. But apples policy of secrecy and unwillingness to accept their ios 8 is at fault is diabolical. Unfortunately ringing tech support or going into the stores is a fruitless task as they will always blame your hardware and claim not to of heard of any issue you put forward. They will then have you performing pointless time wasting tasks like deleting everything etc etc. it's so poor. It's got to the point I absolutely dread their updates whether it's ios or iTunes. They meddle with code that didn't need it and break stuff all the time. Wifi was ticking along nice in ios 7 so why mess with it? I don't mind some change with updates for new features but I detest it when they break existing functionality

I Notice that if I connect to 5ghz band on channel 100 with an Apple AirPort Extreme it works fine. But if I change the channel to anything else, data stops again. My normal router is bt home hub 5. That is a no go on 5ghz with ipad air and mini retina. Strange thing is that my iPhone 5s and 6 both work fine on both routers.

It's great that someones reporting it at last, shame that the article has a link of "fixes" which are all ones already posted on this thread that might give slight improvement, but as most of us have found don't actually fix it, I think that can only be done by Apple via an update judging by the way it looks.

    Hi all,

I have a very curious problem that I haven't seen anyone post about related to my Ipad 3 on iOS 8.0.2 and the Asus N66u (with latest firmware). I recently had my 5Ghz channel set to "Auto" and noticed that my Ipad 3 speedtest.net download speeds was maxing out around 10mbps (I have a 30mb connection). All of my other devices (new Iphone 6, wife's Iphone 4S, laptop, etc) were able to consistently get up to 28/29mbps speeds.

If I go in and select individual control channels in the higher range, I still have this same issue. However, if I select any of the control channels in the lower range, the iPad 3 download speed gets up to the same speed as all of my other devices.

Does that make any sense? I can't seem to find anyone who has posted about iOS 8 wifi issues on the iPad 3 that is specific to which control channel you select?

Does anyone have the Asus RT-N66U router set at a higher control channel with the latest iOS on the Ipad 3 that gets full speed?

I'm on 8.1 Beta 1 and it has not fixed the wifi issue on my iPad Air Wifi only model. I have tried all the fixes listed as well as restoring and setting up as new. Nothing works. It's at the point where my iPad is useless now.

Thats good to know. Glad apple are actually contacting people about the problem now. Just out interest I wondering how they select who to contact. Did you file a case with applecare or document your wifi issues with any apple representative? Or have they just contacted you as you've written on this post.

Also what did the email say? Thanks in advance.

I Have an iPad air that I upgraded to iOS 8.02 directly.

i Have had the same issues described here. Wifi connection just drops. I contacted Apple and they said to first try resetting all network settings and if that doesn't work try a Factory restore. I have done both. It might actually be worse after the factory restore.

I am quite confident there is not an issue with the router. I have an iPhone 5 that is still on iOS 7.1.2  and have been streaming audio on it all day. The iPad running iOS 8.02 has dropped the wifi connection 3 times.

apple suggested they may replace it but if the issue is occurring with new iPads and iPhones im not sure I am interested in that resolution.

I was running iOS 7.1.2 on my iPad air prior and it ran perfectly! So clearly it is an issue with iOS 8.0, 8.02 and 8.1 beta 1 (yes, I have tried all three hoping for a fix). Apple telling people that it is a hardware issue is just them not admitting to the problem. Just look at the facts. Same specific iPad runs perfectly. Update iPad. Now iPad runs like ****. When is Apple going to fix this? I can't even use my iPad.

NOT a hardware issue. Don't let Apple tell you otherwise.

I was having the same wifi problem with my iPhone 6. I changed the following settings on my router and it started working.

    • Wireless Band: 5GHz
    • Network Mode: 802.11a/n
    • Channel Width: 20 MHz only
    • Security Mode: WPA2 Personal (AES)

And here is an Apple document with a couple other settings iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

Apple have just released iOS 8.1 Beta 2 and I have read on another post that the wifi issue has been resolved?

Why does iOS 8.0.2 not resolve the issue of WiFi connectivity with iOS 8 and the new iPhone 6?

Just need to wait for the final version to finally solve this big problem we have all been facing!

i turn on my ipad mini and for some apps it works as long as 10 minutes until the wifi stalls and begins timing out then i have to rest the ipad mini again. i kept my ipod touch unupdated and the wifi works absolutely fine which is why i know its not a problem with my wifi connection

Worst part is, Apple clearly thinks making the old devices unusable will make us want to buy the newer iPad. It is actually driving us toward Google.....

That's amazing or strange. After I changed firmware on my iPad Air to 8.1 Beta 5GHz Wi-Fi was fine. Not sure if I had 8.1 beta 1 or 2.
