Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

steviep200, sure if your connection goes stale and you are required to reboot your system it becomes a contributer to your problem. I'm sure you see this speed decline happen when your other equipment, computers and streaming moives start to pixelate or load slower than usual. But if your equipment other than say Apple, or your streaming movies over Wifi are fine and you notice either your IPad or IPhone 6 isn't loading pages normally on your browser this is a possiable indication that something has happened to your connection/speed. In this case prior to 8.0 update from Apple all was fine on my end. I never experienced a slow issue when loading pages on my IPad, and now especially that I upgraded (8.0.2) the wifi speed I should be better than fine.

Actually when I notice my problem more so is when I clicked on Siri, it couldn't answer anything for me. and told me to come back later. The slow contection stub Siri since it uses the internet to answer majority of the questions asked if not all.

So hopefully Apple does something about this for all of us and fixes the problem.

I made the big mistake of updating my Ipad 4 to IOS 8.0 and that is when the nightmare started.  In my case, I have another Ipad mini with IOS 7.2 and an Iphone with IOS 7.2 as well.  Once I upgraded the IPad 4 to IOS 8.0 it damaged my Wi-FI connection for all the other devices as well.  Even those that still had the old IOS 7.2.  All devices started to have problems connecting to my home network.   It shows the network is there but they can not connect.  If I restart the router and then restart all the devices things work.  However, if I turn then off for the day and try to use them the following day they all have the same problem all over again.  I cam not spend my time restarting the modem and router all the time.  The problem is very clearly caused by IOS 8.0.  I installed IOS8.02 and nothing changed.  Now my Ipad 4 shows that it is in airplane mod even though the airplane mod is off.  Needless to say, IOS 8.0  and IOS 8.02 are a disaster.  Apple needs to fix the mess A.S.A.P.

The other day my iPhone 5s (8.0.2) was connected to my home WiFi (2.4 GHz N) with 3 bars, yet no traffic was going over WiFi at all.  I couldn't download, upload or even ping my router.  I switched to my 5 GHz network and it started working again.  I then switched back to my 2.4 GHz network and it continued to work.  This was the first time I saw this.

I'm also noticing that frequently at work, when I unlock my phone, it's on LTE.  It will jump back onto WiFi in a few seconds, but it used to stay on WiFi.  Possibly related to this, I checked my cellular usage on AT&T's web site for my September billing period and nearly double my average normal usage for a month.    My billing period starts the 3rd of the month and already AT&T is showing I've used 235 MB of data (in 5 days).  That would make my October usage over double my monthly average and the highest data usage for many years.  This considering that during those 5 days, other than commuting, I've not been any place without WiFi.

I'll reply to my own post now. Got home from work, I updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 8.02, just to try it out, worked fine at home, (where the iPhone 6 does not work at all). Then I took the iPhone 6, in the Wifi settings I entered the info manually instead of using DHCP. It works fine with a manual IP!

I entered IP 192.186.1.11, Subnet 255.255.255.0, Router 192.168.1.1 and same for DNS. So far the iPhone 6 is working fine, at full speed.

When it failes it had an IP starting with 169 wich is an internal IP that comes up when the router can not give the device an IP for some reason.

Same issue here, even with 8.0.2 on my iPad Air. Cuts out and keeps spinning even in the middle of app updates, etc.

I've given up trying to figure this out and I really regret updating to iOS 8. My sad tale of woe is similar to everyone else's: immediately after updating to iOS 8, my previously rock-solid wifi connection to our Netgear R7000 router has become maddeningly flaky. No more smooth and uninterrupted streaming via our 125 Mbps cable modem--in other words, plenty of bandwidth--we're now forced to endure frequent buffering and dropped connections on our iOS 8 devices. These include an iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, and an iPad Air. I've done everything recommended in this thread, with no improvement (yes, I'm using 8.0.2). If I turn off wifi and use LTE, the problem goes away--I can actually listen to a complete song via streaming. Turn on wifi, song starts, then abruptly stops after a few seconds, buffering begins, and goes on for a few seconds, then begins playing again, but--yep, it stops again, buffers, etc etc.

Curiously, some apps handle this issue better than others: Netflix streaming will start in HD, then pause to buffer for a few seconds, then resume with no further interruptions. The Jazz Radio! and NPR News apps are hopeless though. (All of these are updated to their latest versions.) TuneIn Radio is similar to Netflix--it begins playing a station, stops to buffer, resumes, maybe stops again to buffer, then plays on fairly reliably for awhile. (I find that if I change a station in TuneIn, the play/buffer/play pattern repeats for that station before it settles into a steady stream. Why?)

I can access Web sites OK--and when I do download an app or music file, it seems to hit the expected download rates. My problem is most severe with the music/news streaming apps that I use.

So for now I guess I'll just have to wait for 8.1 and hope that helps.

I Think I "resolved"  the issue on mine after reading other posts around the Internet and this discussion thread:  Re: iPad Air WiFi (5GHz) issues after iOS 8 upgrade

I Had my wifi router running dual 2.4 ghz/ 5 ghz channels on one SSID. I separated them to two different SSIDs. my iPad works flawlessly on the 2.4 but continues to disconnect, buffer etc on the 5.0. And, no the problem is not my router because my iPhone still using iOS 7.1.2 works flawlessy on both frequencies as do rest of the devices in my house.

many developers are reporting that the beta firmware update in 8.1 has fixed it. We'll have to wait but for now I'd try running your devices on 2.4 ghz only.

I'm having your same exact issues.  I'm using an iPhone 5 with the updated update to iOS 8.  My iMac connects no issue to my router.  My iPhone 5 on the other hand keeps disconnecting from the network and asking for my password, then saying its incorrect when its the same password my iMac is connected with.  Using a TP Line 802.11a/b/n with an amped wireless extender.  My wife's iPhone 5s has the same issue.  It's gotta be a iOS 8 glitch cause this makes no sense.

'Wasn't Constructive' ? That's something, considering they (Apple) gave us a 'Destructive' update.

Why don't they just man up an admit there is a problem, and are working on it.

Apple does do beta testing, but it's unreasonable to think that they can catch every bug in every software release. This is not the 1950's. NO company, including Apple,  is going to "man up" and talk about software issues. The crazies of the world would turn it into a legality fiasco. Apple is working on a fix, but this is a complex issue. They need to make sure that fixing this doesn't cause other problems in other areas of the software. 8.1 looks very promising.

I kinda of agree, and do understand what you are saying.

However, this is not some minor bug we have here,

it's a serious WiFi issue (plenty of evidence about), and WiFi is the very core of a mobile device.

Not seen any info on 8.1, so would not know if it's promising.

iOS 8 looked promising, but has not quite worked out as of yet (for many, not all of course).

Fingers crossed that it's sorted in the near future,

I have to disagree with you and agree with "devonmyles".  Apple has had many months to beta test iOS 8.  As devonmyles says, Wifi connectivity is one of the most basic needs for anyone using an iPod, iPad, and iPhone.  This should have been sorted long before release.  And, there are so many other bugs that we are reading about.  Bug free may be too much to ask, but basic stuff should work.

This is one of the most sloppy releases I have seen from Apple in 24 years of using their products.  I understand that they are in a rush to market to compete with the Android world of Google spyware, but it hurts Apple's reputation and alienates users when they bring out such frustrating work.  Plus, if you have followed this thread since day one, as I have, you would see that thousands of man hours of users' time has been wasted in trying to work around a fundamental flaw.  That is unacceptable.  The people responsible for testing this release should be fired.  They have cost Apple dearly.

I agree! Many are waiting on all the extra features that are to come out of 8.1. I, and I'm sure others alike are praying and hoping that all the essential items are working and fixed. Yes I want the extras, but if the important things don't work; Why then worry about the extras?

It's very frustrating since I myself have an IPad Air and a New IPhone 6, I went with Apple changing from basically Android ecosystem because I liked what Apple was doing with their product and figured I would jump on. Now I'm questioning myself wondering if I made the right choice. Please don't get me wrong, I totally understand that things happen and will continue to happen. But I would think that the core operation of the OS would be the most essential before all the other bells and whistles that are added.

Couldn't agree more. IOS 8 has created problems I've never had. Can't access App Store. Lost use of wi fi on most apps.

Absolutly the worst upgrade grade ever offered.

Tell my special needs children whom I use my iPad with everyday why they can't use it until apple lift their game.

    Fix it fast please.

    A very unhappy customer.

Only thanks I have is that I didn't do the upgrade on my phone yet!!!!!

Evidenced by the fact my partner isn't experiencing any of these problems on their Ipad mini, which is still running ios7 I can only conclude you are right.  Updating to ios8 (without doing research about the wifi issues, and the various apps it rendered useless) was a stupid thing to do.  But when Apple's official line is that you MUST have the latest version for "security" you just assume you have no choice to update.

What irritates me the most is there is no option to "wind back" as there are on other products, when features don't work or don't work together.  or failing that have updates with features that you can opt out of if they are going to be inappropriate for your particular model of hardware.  For example, why do I need all the iphone **** when my ipad doesn't have cellular capability?  It's just extra bulk to the operating system that slows down the unit and messed up other features.

Correction, there is the option to windback but only if you also have the restore file for IOS7 which Apple are threatening to withdraw support for therefore risking using dubious third party copies.  Plus it deletes all your data in the process necessitating extensive backing up before attempting it.  Something most of us would consider too much work to bother and just "put up with" the fact we have a useless device.

    Thanks Apple.
