Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

It was also the largest release resulting in many users needing to clear space on their iphones just to install it.  That implies to me that A. they tried to include too much in one release and therefore COULD NOT have had enough time to completely test it. and B. They had made no customer facing decisions regarding impact and support.  The fact I contacted them 3 weeks ago and was told it was the app developers fault stuff wasn't working properly is just ridiculous.

My ipad worked perfectly for exactly TWO MONTHS from purchase, now it acts up constantly.  The only difference, that sodding update.

Just a word of warning to those of you that don't post "constructive" feedback (in other words you are venting your frustration and letting Apple know what you think of their latest iOS release) that you may have your posts deleted as I have. This was even though they used carefully worded, un-obtrusive and polite English...

To keep this post in line with constructiveness I would like to inform Apple that my 2x iPads (1x Air, 1x Mini) and 2x iPhone 6's continue to drop wifi every few minutes or seconds thanks to iOS 8. If you would like to install your monitoring app that you have offered other users on my devices then please feel free.

Apple has had many months to beta test iOS 8.

Apple has not been sitting on their hands. Beta testing is a continuous ongoing process. And you are forgetting a few very key parts. Firstly, that beta testing is performed largely by the developer community (people that are not Apple employees). OS X 10.10 is being beta tested not only by developers, but also by people like you and me through a program called Appleseed ( https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/welcome ). Apple is doing this so that they can expose as many different conditions as possible to iOS 8 / OS X 10.10, so that the majority of bugs pop up and can be exposed (and fixed) before release. Whether you realize it or not, Apple takes beta testing very seriously, as they should, and they have even developed a special app called TestFlight so that developers can sort through and manage beta testing better.

Also, there are literally millions of people using these iDevices, and only a few hundred, if that, complaining here about this. That means that while it is an obvious bug to us here in this particular thread, it is not so obvious to the rest of the world using iOS 8. For whatever reason, this bug did not pop up for developers or Apple while it was being tested. The developers can't report a bug if it doesn't occur for them when they are testing it. Yes I agree that this is a very basic function but these things happen. A few years ago after OS X was released, e-mail stopped working (another basic function) and people were complaining about that. It took several months for developers and Apple to find the root cause and fix it. When you are one of the few that experience a bug, it doesn't matter to you if there are millions of others who do not experience it. Understandably, you just want it to get fixed. I know many people who have upgraded to iOS 8.0 who do NOT have any problems with it at all. They look surprised when I tell them about my wi-fi bug experience. All you can do is to be patient and know that Apple (and the developer community beta testing) are actively working on this and any other bugs (large and small) that might be out there. Bugs like this are why many people simply wait a while before downloading a new software release.

I know I will never download an OS update immediately ever again. I have Parallels 10 waiting for the Yosemite release however will now wait at least a few months for the teething issues to be sorted before I consider "upgrading".

Same here. I love Parallels, and Yosemite is going to be amazing, BUT I will wait a while before I switch to using them....

Well the obvious is that the next update is/will be a gamble. But the fact that I need a fix for my devices that I probably will upload and update sooner than waiting to see how it works later mentality. I guess you can compare it to the game of blackjack, if I get 21 (blackjack), I will consider staying. Then I can be choosy with the next future Apple update (whatever that may be 8.2) and possibly hold out and wait to see if problems occur.

I decided to ring Apple instead of waiting for them to read the forums. I was very disappointed the person said they new nothing about the problems listed here or the ones I was having.

She asked me if I just updated to ios8 or if I restored my phone first before updating. i said I just updated as I normally do. She said no no no, I really should restore my iPhone then update afterwards, "this is what I do" she went on to say. She said it because when people up date they some times get messages or phone calls during the update and it doesn't work properly. I told her I use airplane mode etc and has anyone else had problems she said I'm the only one. Later in the conversation I asked her if she had problems she said "no I don't have an iPhone" this contradicts what she said earlier she also said later "I have had a bunch of calls about this today" again contradicting what she said earlier.

Basically I don't think they acknowledge a problem

mean an while my internet keep dropping safari resets my device I can't stream to my to anymore the list goes on .....

MyMac8MyPC, you sound like a real Apple apologist.

As I said, I have been using Apple products personally, for over 24 years, and even had work on an Apple II before the Mac came out.  So I am an old **** in this game, though computers are not my profession.  They are a hobby and a tool.

I believe that the beta testing for iOS 8 and OS X.10 has been more widespread than ever before.  So, I believe that many bugs were fixed.  However, this version of iOS has more bugs than I can remember.  Yes, there have been serious bugs with Apple software in the past.  And Steve Jobs was not immune from issuing buggy software.  But, that does not excuse this level of problems.  The release was premature.

As far as the few hundred people who have had problems, did you notice that this thread alone has had more than 100,000 views.  And there are many more threads, both on apple.com and on other sites.  And, you can read other blogs and listen to podcasts to hear others that have had the Wifi problem as well as many other problems due to bugs.

There may be reasons why many people did not notice the problems with Wifi immediately.  First, people who use iPhones were getting downloads using the telephone data network without noticing.  Early in this thread, many complained that they had used their monthly quota within a few days because they had not realised that their Wifi was not working.  Many others suffer from the usual inconsistencies of Wifi signals and simply attributed this problem to that.  It is more conspicuous among iPad and iPod users.

As you said, many people have not had this problem and that suggests to me that the problem only exists with certain routers.  Again, from this thread, many people complaining were using an iPhone 6 and an Apple router.  So, it may be that there are certain chipsets in various routers that are related to the problem.

    l

Bottom line for me.  Apple was very slow to acknowledge this problem.  For the first two weeks of this thread, people who contacted Apple, including me, got the same response, "the problem is with your network".  Thousands of hours of users' time has been wasted because of this buggy software.  You are right, mea culpa, we should not have updated so quickly.  I will not the next time (I too have Parallels 10 running on OS X.9 at the moment).  But, somebody has to be the first to update and they should not have to suffer from a paralysed iPad.

I agree. I think the issue is far more widespread than this thread. Many posts are fragmented but luckily this has momentum. Many users suffer wifi but either don't care or can't be bothered. People like my sister who experiences issues but will never be on a forum as she really saw iPhone as a fashion accessory. I have seen several iOS 8 devices among friends or family and I'd say 50% are glitchy on wifi now.

as for waiting several months for a fix is not good enough . They may sort it but then just a few more months will go drop ios 9 on us and the bugs will start again given apples recent form

And why diddle with the code. It was fine. And why inflict s new iOS every year, give an iOS a two or three year run and imagine how mature and stable it could become

I am not sure what to make of that, and I know you are entitled to an opinion,

but I am afraid the internet has many tales of woe regarding iOS 8.XX Wifi issues,

    it's not just this thread.

I suppose we will get there in the end, and proberly with plenty more daft comments.

I Just think they have rushed it out. iPhone will no longer work on the built in Bluetooth in my car, streaming is totally useless on the iPad.  pull it together Apple.
