Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

It's a real shame iOS 8 is such a mess as the iPhone 6 hardware is absolutely gorgeous. I love it but the buggy mess that is iOS is ruining the experience unfortunately.

Same problem. Often lose wi-fi connection and can't reconnect back because wi-fi list is empty. (iPhone 6, 8.0.2.)

Yes!! Been going crazy over the past weeks as the iPad Air & iPad mini retina stopped working after 1-10 minutes using the Wifi from the Timecapsule.

Switched back to my (older) wifi network yesterday 'cause I couldn't deal with it anymore and whoop!

    Working fine since!

Conclusion: iOS8 rendered Timecapsule useless (and iPad Air and iPad mini as well if using it).

Sorry Apple, this is a HUGE problem and needs to be solved.

There really is no excuse for not knowing the iOS 8 5 ghz problems. Don't Apple employees have iPads?

all they would have to do is use them and experience the problem

    isnt this research 101

This describes my iPhone 6 problem exactly. I have made movies of a 4s and 6 undergoing a speed test on Cisco. The 6 just cuts out or used slow. My issue has now been escalated to the engineers but I haven't heard back. This is what I have tried to no avail: full restore, switch off iMac Wi-Fi, network settings reset, switch off all other devices. This is what seems to work a little bit sometimes: shut down iMac and all other devices, switch airplane mode off and on when the connection drops out.

All very annoying. My 6 will be returned if nothing happens in a week.

This is obviously a driver issue of some sort. Why do they not revert the driver back to the iOS 7 one till they find a fix for the new one? When I took my iPad mini to the apple store they didn't even run any diagnostics on it they just swapped it out for a new one.

In reply to inkpump the guys at the apple stores probably have not updated to the new iOS yet general browsing seems fine to me but it is streaming that I have the issue. It seems when a lot of data is being processed by the wifi.

Watched 10 min of Netflix yesturday and had to disable and re-enable the wireless about 9 times. Finally got sick of it and just turned off the ipad and turned on the Xbox.

Ii is very is very frustrating but I am not going to go down the route like people in here are saying about moving away from Apple to Microsoft I just want an iPad that is fit for use.

My iPad Air 128GB (iOS 8.0.2) keeps dropping the WiFi connection to the latest model Apple Time Capsule (2TB, latest firmware). Turning the WiFi on and off is no longer enough to fix the problem. Restarting the Time Capsule helps temporarily, and does resetting the network settings on the iPad. Nothing works permanently and sometimes it only takes a few minutes for the problem to recur - that's a lot of resetting just to keep the darn thing working.

Have the same problem with iPad Air Internet disconnect on the 5Ghz WiFi channel. In the last three weeks I tried every conceivable suggestion for a fix; no dice. They should offer the option of going back to iOS 7.1.2 until they fix this shameful situation. This is what happens when a technology / engineering company is managed by a bunch of bean counters (marketing / business develelopment  / accountant) type; Tim Cook is a back office type functionary. I have the iPad Air and iPhone 5, my LAST Apple products!

Yes, I have this too.  My retina iPad mini no longer communicates well on the 5 GHz band of my dual band router (Netgear R7000 with latest firmware)  but functions okay at 2.4 GHz. This all happened after iOS8 upgrade.  My 15 inch MBP (late 2013), 5s and iPhone 6 all work on the 5 Ghz band, with the iOS devices all on 8.02 now. It's strange and I'm also hoping 8.1 solves this.

My IPAD mini has the same problem.  Technicians in the APPL store says there is no way to go back to IOS 7 and I have to wait.

I've been having this problem on my iPhone 5s since this summer on the last ios7 update. I was hoping ios 8 would fix it but it didn't. I've reset my phone and it fixea the problem for maybe 2 days but it always comes back. I've been having to toggle my wifi to get it to work for over 3 months now which is just pathetic. I came from years of android usage when I bought the 5s last year and was enjoying a new experience until this crippling bug with no fix. I now end up leaving my wifi off a lot and chewed up over 10 gigs of LTE data this past month because of it.

I find it surprising that Apple has not official posted that the 5GHz Wi-Fi band simply won't work for the iPad Air.

Everybody familiar with dual band band router web interface can set a different SSID for the 2.4 GHz and a different identifier for the 5 Ghz band.

I usually ad _5GHz to the name. I used to let the iPad Air select what band to use but it never worked properly.

I rather select the band myself.

My iPad works great on the 2.4Ghz band, there are more issues, multitouch for example doesn't work all the time, oh well.... there will be 8.1 eventually...

yep ios 8 is trash what a joke of a ios even ios 7.1.2 give me less problems to deal with then this ios 8.0.2 still have too many problems app crashes, lag, browser auto switch to appstore. why did apple even bother stop signing 7.1.2 when ios 8.0.2 isn't even stable to run on the device. only i find remotely useful would be the being able to link iphone and ipad together with icloud to make calls, other then that everything else is just a battery drain features.

I May have found a work around as my ipad had now been streaming non stop for about an hours no disconnections.  try setting the access point to wireless 802.11b not N I know it slows down the speed and is not the best solution but it worked for me. If you have a duel channel access pong maybe set it so one of them is b just for the iPhone/iPad.

as I said not the best solution but if you are not transferring files via the wifi it is a good work around until Apple fixed the 802.11n issue.
