Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Hi everyone, I did 3 things that seem have worked out to resolve the wifi problem. I cleaned the cookies and history at safari, i deactivated the keychain iCloud and turned off - on find my iPhone and rebooted the phone.

I hope this can solve the problem.

Just a quick snapshot of my chain of events.  I’m currently on my fourth iPhone 6 Plus 64GB here in London, UK. Every time I have spoken to AppleCare and told them that I have gone through all the Wi-Fi troubleshooting methods possible they have asked me to get a brand new retail replacement as I’m within my 14 day return period.  I’ve been experiencing the following issues:

    1. Wi-Fi disconnects and switches to 4G (Restart required for temp fix)
    2. Wi-Fi is still active but there is no traffic or activity– often when in sleep mode for long periods of time.  (Toggle Wi-Fi on/off for temp fix)
    3. Wi-Fi disconnects and cannot find any networks (restart required for temp fix)
    4. This has been occurring on both iOS 8 and 8.0.2
    5. The issues are the same on both my 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks
    6. This is affecting my ip6+ and 5s (5s used to work perfect on ios7 on same networks) – My MBP-R and all other devices run perfectly on my network.

I spoke to AppleCare again yesterday and asked for their advice as its now my fourth iPhone in just under a month. This time they said that apple were fully aware of the Wi-Fi problem and that new repair tickets were not being raised for their engineers as they are already working hard to get this resolved. They also said they could see all the issues raised on the apple discussions boards which they usually don’t admit too! I asked what to do next and the advisor apologised and said this is clearly a software glitch and will be resolved in the next update. I asked for a timescale but unfortunately none was given.

As stated above I have tried all the troubleshooting methods discussed on forums and on tech websites but the only thing that gives me a stable connection without any disconnects (especially on my 6 plus) is turning cellular/mobile data off when I know I’m going to be on Wi-Fi for a sustained period of time (e.g. at home or work). I appreciate this is annoying but it’s the best temp fix until an update comes out.

Hope it helps everyone who is having issues with their devices that have cellular functionality.

    Any comments welcome

It may well work on the iPhone, but It seems iPads are suffering an awful lot.

Certainly your work around don't work for me on my iPad Air.

This thread is now up to 59 pages spanning the last four weeks, and a lot of

folk have tried just about every work around, and in some cases might work for a little while,

but then back to the same problem(s).

It seems Apple are now working on the problem, it's just a case of sitting tight,

and waiting for (hopefully soon) an update.

Similar problem here since IOS 8.0.0 through .2. iPad 3 w/retina.

-At home I get "Incorrect Password" for my network, even though I did the initial update via wifi. Did 8.0.1 and .2 updates via iTunes, same "incorrect password" still

Multiple iphones and ipads work fine via home network. Unsecured the network, "Unable to connect", tried my guest network, "Incorrect password" Unsecured it, "Unable to connect"

-Reset, rebuilt, renamed home network, did everything I could, it's only a problem on ipad 3. Bring it to work and it WILL connect to our network just fine even with IT's network security. Tried a hotel unsecured wifi network, "Unable to connect."

-restored ipad multiple times, via itunes back up, back to factory zero, nothing changes. Tried all the "reset network settings" suggestions, everything I could find suggested to the ipad, no luck.

Right now I have an ipad w/retina that works only at work, frustrating.

Why won't Apple accept the issues and resign the last issue of iOS 7 to allow people with these problems revert back from iOS 8.  I spent two hours with Apple Care (should be renamed Apple Don't Care) pleading with them for a link or something to get me back to iOS 7.  After going through there Quick Teat I was told that by phones hardware was working perfectly, only to be told after their diagnostic checks that my phone did have hardware problems as software can not brake hardware!  I repeatedly told them that the problem only accord after downloading iOS 8 and that they should allow me to revert back to prove this point. There senior administrator a chap called Austin said that the link back to iOS 7 had been removed on purpose by Apple and that he could do nothing to help.

    One word ANDROID or SAMSUNG

    Not happy Apple

What type of encryption have you used on your router?

People have reported better success with WPA2.  Problems have been reported with WEP.

It is not encryption, or any quick remedy solution. The problem is resource management within the operating system itself: memory / storage / process interface / timing between process handoff. There is nothing (repeat nothing) the end user can do to fix this problem. There are some temporary remedies the user can do to get some connectivity to the net, but eventually it will fail and you get the endless revolving data wheel in the upper left corner.

Apple should be ashamed of themselves, but they're not ........

    My SOLUTION:

First disable all encryption on your router and restart it. See if you connect without any password (you should and it should work)

Second (provided first step works) turn on MAC address filtering on your router. Yes it's a little time consuming to input every device number but it works.
If you can get your MAC addresses from your router before you do the changes, print that page, it will help with input later. You can also use a program like "whoisonmywifi" to see all the connected devices before starting MAC addressing. You can also use an iphone app called Net Analyzer to get all MAC addresses.
This works on a new Linksys WRT1900AC and on a Netgear WNR2000. Using four Ipads, Five Iphones, seven Apple TV's, it works great. Versions 4, 4S, and 5.

And NO, this is not the most secure way to run your system but a hacker would have to spoof one of your MAC addresses to access your network. But we all know if a hacker wants in, he's in...

Did you get this working on iPad Air on the 5Ghz network. The 2.4 Ghz is OK maintaining connection to the net. Also, iPhones are OK on both networks. I believe the most serious instability is with iPad Air on the 5 Ghz channel Network.

The Ipad air is working but I don't know if it was on the 2.4 ghz or the 5 ghz. The Linksys broadcasts both and the Netgear is only 2.4.
