Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

"Apple please let us upgrade back to iOS 7"

And of course, iOS 7 would feel like an upgrade!

    In case Apple didn't hear.

Changing DNS setting to 8.8.8.8 (in iPad settings) seems to have fixed my iPad Air. Great find! Thanks Evyfeline.

UPDATE 15 minutes later: Despite DNS setting still showing 8.8.8.8, the wifi slowdown/freeze has returned. Oh well, nice try. I think we have to wait for Apple.

    All,

i had the same problem as all of you here, after many long trial and error go I have fixed my iPad air. The problem does sit with the device its self but the fix is actually with the router, most routers now run a 2.5ghz frequency and a 5ghz as a dual outgoing signal, the iPad cannot handle receiving both if these frequencies and freezes after a short while after getting confused.

i had to go into the wifi router settings and simply turn off the 5ghz signal and it's all working perfectly again some 3 days on.

i had tried every re boot, re build and apple even gave me a new iPad but this simple fix was actually all that was needed. Really hope this fixes you issues guys and good luck.

Here's the thing...yes 2.5 GHz will allow iOS 8.2 run without freezing, but it's SLOOOW. It's not the answer, for the simple reason that I was able to fly with 5 GHz with iOS 7. My speed is about 2/3 slower when forced to downgrade to 2.5 GHz. We shouldn't have to dumb down our WIFI in order to handle this upgrade. We simply need them to release the next update to fix this mess...which I can't help thinking that it will be before the new iPad rollout.

How do you consider that "fixed" when the solution was to not utilize the technology you paid for?

Those using the Apple Extreme router can't turn off 5ghz. But what worked for me so far (Airport Utility under WIreless Options) is make sure 5ghz is set to "automatic" to let the router decide what 5ghz channel to use, if at all.

Well I concider it a fix until apple pull their fingers out and mine is super fast still on 2.5 so not sure how that works.

POSSIBLY A FLUKE FIX... a week in now and still getting max speeds on 5Ghz on iPhone 6+ 8.0 & 6+ 8.0.2 no dropouts and no slowdown.

Was having the exact same issue.

Attempted all all the fixes/workarounds stated above. Worked well for a few hours, then continued to get dropouts or slow speeds.

Connecting to 2.4Ghz was consistant, However, speeds were maxing out at 9.7Mbps down and 5.8Mbps up.

Last week I had to factory reset my router (netgear R6300) and re-setup everything for other reasons (pain in the backside really). Since doing this, both myself and my wife (both on iPhone 6+ 8.0 & 8.0.2) have been connected to the 5Ghz band averaging consistent speeds of 93Mbps down and 37Mbps up (our usual speed) without any issues.

I Held off posting on the forum as I thought it might have been temporary, but it's been about a week now and no dropouts or slow speeds.

Not it sure if I was just lucky with this, so far so good.

After the factory reset, I am using a different SSID with WPA-PSK + WPA2+PSK wireless security, everything else has been the same (Including other devices connected to the network)

i also reserved IPs for all devices on the network through the router (keeping all devices set to DHCP) but I had this set prior to factory reset.

Sorry for blabbering, just trying to detail everything I have changed In hope it might release some users frustration.

Not it sure if this will work for anyone else, might be worth a try until the release of 8.1 ?

Wish you all the best of luck!

Here's a new twist on an "old" problem.  Today my 5s running iOS 8.0.2 stopped sending or receiving data over both WiFi and LTE, despite still being connected to both.  No app could download anything, including Safari, which timed out.  Mail didn't work, pinging didn't work.  Nothing worked.  I've seen this happen with WiFi before, but never LTE.  Turning airplane more of and off didn't help.  The only thing that fixed it was restarting my phone.

This had been happening for over 2 hours before I noticed the problem.  I think part of the reason for that is I was still getting the occasional push notification during that time, though emails and calendar invites weren't downloading.

This leads me to a theory that what actually was happening here was that the iPhone was not creating any new connections, but still allowing data to go over older ones.  Since the connection to Apple's Push server stays open over Cellular all the time, that would explain why push notifications were still working, but nothing else was.

I hadn't restarted my 5s in 10 days which is the longest I've gone without restarting it since I've updated to iOS 8, which makes me wonder if there's a network killing bug that takes over a week to show up.

the weird thing is when im at home using wifi, i disable cellular data in setting. Let the phone idle for 30 secs. And then no more wifi dropping network connection issue anymore.

I' m not such an expert on using my Ipad, but I can tell when it's working like crap after updating its software.

my question is how the **** Apple made such a huge mistake with this" revolutionary" software?

I Would really want to go back to IOS 7. Is there a way to go back? ( not an Ipad expert )

I have the same problem with my iPad Air and it is completely useless.

but finally I find out that after using Facebook or uploading it in Safari, wifi disconnected & I have to reset the network.

As now  I am living in India; whenever I go to "google.co.uk", wifi disconnected and it can't even upload google  but uploading "google.in" doesn't cause problem.

    aany sugestions ?

No, you haven't a problem with your router. This problem exists because of the new OS. This problem is infuriating and difficult to accept, as it wasnt even fixed in th last update. I have gone back and forth with apple care, talking to a couple senior technicians, each one advising me all the steps that have nothing to do with the problem, all apples fault. What has been truly frustrating, and understandibly infuriating, is apples insistence that engineers are working on it. the worst. Apple care reps I talked to would tell me, it's the first time they heard of the problem... I think they are told to dissimulate the truth,  that there is a serious problem in ios8. Ironically, Apple is only eroding confidence. It wouldn't be as bad if they were forthcoming, but they are not, and it feels insulting which only worsens the problem. This is a major let down, regular loss of wifi connectivity on both iPhone and iPad. Unacceptable.

    I totally agree.

I was a great apple fan and have purchased MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPad and iPad mini over the last couple of years... But this iso 8 crap has totally shook my confidence in the company... I now have 3 out of 4 Apple devices that are messing me about constantly after this poxy update.

It is a disaster and a disgrace for Apple not to have sorted this yet...
