Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

My iPad Air is now working fine after making a router setting change. I recommend others give that a try. It's based on R.Crowden's recommendation to change the 5ghz setting. Either turn it off or make it "automatic" (in my case) if it's not already. I have not had a problem since and now always have consistent full connection speed. It required rebooting the router, which might be beneficial as well. Worth a try!

I had problems with ios8. Touch screen wasn't working. This is what I did and it worked:

    1. Restore as new iphone (still didn't work)

    2. Hard reset (home and top button)

    Now it works. Very strange.

    iPad Air/BTHub5 here.

Done all that (and every other work around that has been kindly mentioned) - Still the same outcome - dropped Wifi.

Three other iPads in the house that are still on iOS 7xx - no such problems.

There is nothing 'weird' 'strange' or any other term(s) mentioned in this thread.

Just a plain almighty nasty iOS8 update from Apple.

I remember the publicity Apple let out about this 8 release.

'Its bigger than the introduction of the iTunes store', or something very similar.

One thing, it's more embarrassing than when Steve Jobs asked James Bond (Sean C)

to advertise the Double-O-Mac product in the 90's (although the fake spoof letter reply was funny).

Hi Alex - No, that's a new one on me.

For sure, I will give it a go.

    Thanks.

Edit - Changed on 2.4 & 5GHz, all combinations and still not as should be regarding Wifi.

    Oh well, thanks.

OK. I have been holding off on sending this message until 24 hours have passed. The suggestion below appears to have solved my iPad Air connectivity to the 5Ghz network (I never had a problem with the 2.4 Ghz network). Just make sure you do the two-finger reboot after making this setup change. Hope this helps!

Disable a Wi-Fi System Service Setting

If resetting network settings did nothing for you, you may want to experiment with toggling off a wi-fi system setting. MacRumors reports that some users have had a positive impact by disabling this setting, though it’s not entirely clear what exactly this specific setting controls (it is possible it’s a wi-fi based geolocation service, hence why it’s in Location Services settings).

Head to the Settings app, go to “Privacy” and then to “Location Services”, where at the bottom you will find “System Services”, then flip the switch to disable Wi-Fi Networking. This does NOT turn off wireless networking in iOS.

Then try and join the network again, some users report this to be a success.

wifi connectivity on my ipad mini has been brutal since upgrading... It is working fine everywhere except my home network. It will connect for a couple minutes, then disconnect. When I try to reconnect, it asks for my network password over and over but doesn't ever connect me. I've tried turning wifi off and back on, turning the ipad off and back on, forgetting the network... nothing is working.

Disabling wifi networking under the iPad's privacy settings did nothing to fix the issue for me. I disabled all location services with no result. Doing a wifi reset also did nothing for me.

The only thing that changed everything was on the router. I'm convinced it has something to do with the 5ghz channel setting, or some similar setting there followed by a router reboot. I'm going on 2 days now successfully.

Hi there, In the early days of all this nonsense, this was one of the 'work arounds' mentioned.

However, again it kinda of helps for a while, then bad business as normal is resumed.

Can you imagine buying a new iPad with iOS 8, getting home, then reading 62 pages from this site

trying to get it to perform as advertised?

    Heads held in shame APPLE.

In my case I made the fatal mistake of installing iOS8 the first day it was available. The iPhone 5 survived OK, but the iPad Air 5Ghz network failed almost immediately. Just like you I tried every trick in the book and got the Apple kids throwing their arms in the air. As I said earlier here, I believe the problem is an OS resource management issue; this "upgrade" failure and the map fiasco of last year is a reflection of a technology company managed by a bunch of bean counters. Apple needs to pay more attention to the software side of the house. Let Jon Ives wallow in his orgasmic ecstasy of his designs, but we need gadgets that actually work ......

Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave.

Totally agree with everything you say.

I must also give a huge thumbs up to all the folk on this particular thread who

must have spent hours of frustrating time looking for fixes and work around's,

and then posted possible short term solutions.

These kind folk really do put Apple to shame for the effort they have put in to help solve,

and make life easier for Apple users with this particular, diabolical, so called iOS update.

Im now on my third data top up this month, costing me an additional £18 vs 0 data top ups in the previous year and a bit of my contract. Will Apple be compensating us for this? I doubt it.

Luckily for my wife, I installed iOS8 before her, so her iPhone 5 (which we got at the same time) continues to work without issue. Its just mine.

I can only connect whilst sitting next to the router, if I go upstairs whilst connected it stops transmitting data despite still having 2 bars of wifi signal. If I then disconnect to the network, it wont let me reconnect and I get the wrong password / cannot connect error messages.

Like others have said, if theyre not going to fix it anytime soon, just let us revert back to iOS 7. At least that one worked and didnt cost me a fortune in data!!

Apple care have sent me a few emails lately. No admission of a fault with iOS 8 but was emailed a monitoring tool to install. Has anyone else had this? I am pretty nervous about installing it given apples recent track record. Does it have any side effects like conflicts with clour functions, excessive battery drain or contributing to an already growing 'other' space on the the phone by the day despite very light usage? Just anything to be aware of?

am well cheesed off with apple these days. This iOS 8 is a horror show and I see they are about to force itunes 12 on us with radical UI changes and no doubt fresh bugs. Why can't they leave things alone and allow software to mature. I've seen less bugs at an insect farm than I have on iOS 8

We are now on PAGE 63 (not counting all the other pages similar to this problem regarding ios8) I am no novice with Apple products owning an iphone 6, ipad air, mac air, airport express & apple tv. I have tried EVERYTHING including a complete restore on my ipad air & I continue to have wifi issues. I find it extra frustrating when the replies from level 6,7 & 8 responders continue to defend apple & try to convince all of us who are having problems (when we didn't have ANY before the upgrade) that we haven't tried everything to rectify the problems on our devices or worse yet, that it's "figment of our imagination" because THEY aren't having problems.

Apple, are you reading these boards? Apple, will you PLEASE acknowledge there's a problem & at least let us know you're working on it?

    PLEASE???
