Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

HHere is how to get this fixed. Call your carrier and demand unlimited cellular service for free until they get this fixed. Because my Wi-Fi does not work it is causing my cellular data plan to go past my monthly allotment. I will demand unlimited cellular from Verizon tomorrow. Make them feel it in their wallet and it will get fixed.

    Well.....I've done it !!

As I said a couple of pages back after many years as a loyal apple user I've given up with them and bought a brand new Samsung Galaxy s 10.5 tablet to replace my iPad.  It was a good move as this thing rocks ! It's thinner than the iPad,  the screen is so much better and of course I can use the wifi for as long as I want without it hanging up.  So in a way the problem with the wifi has forced me to look at Apple alternatives.

I wish all you guys that are going to stick with apple all the best and hope that Apple manage to sort out the many problems that you are all having.  Need to sort out replacements for my iPhone next !

hackedoffwithios8.  What a silly thing to do!

First of all, the update, iOS 8.1, will be out today and will probably fix the problem.

Secondly, the new iPad Air 2 is thinner than the Samsung and has a purer screen, in terms of colours.  It will outrock your Samsung.

And thirdly, but using an Android machine, you are joining the largest Spynet in the world, Google,  Now everything you do on your Samsung will be monitored by Google and added to your profile with them.  Whether they, eventually, abuse this information, or someone within the company sells it, you can count your identity gone.

As for the iPhone.  While my updated iPhone 5 had the problem, my new, start from fresh iPhone 6 does not.  But, since you have joined the Google spynet, you might as well go all in and give them everything.  Better switch to the Chrome browser, too, if you are not already.

Shame on Apple for creating this problem.  But, more fool anyone who switches to Android.

A bit early to be making such claims.

First, let's sit back and see how iOS 8.1 pans out.

If this forum goes into meltdown tonight, I am afraid we

are the fools for tolerating this nonsense.

    But hey ho, fingers crossed.

Actually, no.  While I have been extremely frustrated by these problems and have been on this thread since very near the beginning, I would rather switch to Windows 8 than to the pure spyware that is Android.  I am inconvenienced, but I know that i am not vulnerable to my personal being risking cyber attack.

That said, Apple should be ashamed of what they have done.  On the other hand, I just updated three Macs to Yosemite without incident, so they can do better.

Ironic that I have to post my ramblings on this forum from W8.1,

because my iPad Air drops Wifi during posts....

I do find although a bit early it makes everyone wonder. My partner uses Samsung stuff and there is no difference in her Wi-Fi. Our use a laptop she uses a laptop even our Xbox there is no drop in Wi-FiThe only things that seem to be affected our devices with only change from Apple if it was used for work then I would have no choice. So I do understand that some people are changing from Apple now

I Can only keep fingers crossed that 8.1 will sort things later. Am pretty nervous. If it doesn't I wonder if they will ever sort out as apple is pretty much of the mindset that their implementation is right and screw the fact that many people are struggling. Personally I cant afford to try another phone or risk upgrading to a 6 (with no guarantee it will be any better). I am mired in a 5s contract so it's make or break. Personally I detest apples tinkering, they seemed to have it spot on in ios 7 so why do they see fit to make changes and cause grief. I also don't see what they have to release a new iOS every year. longer cycles will create more stable software as it matures. With every new ios there are so many new problems that arise, bugs and broken functionality. Maybe they'll get wifi right at some point with ios 8 but knowing them will unleash iOS 9 just as we are all happy and create a whole new wave of bugs.

i Am very nervous about later - please let it work!

An iPhone 6  is not the solution.  I have two of them and both are experiencing the same wifi problems as discussed here. iOS 8.0.2 made no improvement.  iPhones and iPads with iOS 8 suddenly loose wifi connectivity and show no network available, when I typically have 3-8 in range at any time.  Only solution so far has been to restart device which then connects to network just fine after restart, for a while, then problem reappears.  Certainly seems to be an iOS 8 issue.  Other devices I'm running on iOS 7 have never shown this problem and devices now on iOS 8 did not show this problem until upgrading to iOS 8. I have 8 iOS devices  and only those on iOS 8 are experiencing this problem.  Kinda obvious where the issue is.

While we're all frustrated with Apple's screw-up of IOS 8, I see the wifi problem varies significantly between users. Some have gotten their devices to work by going through the seven or so reported possible workaround solutions. My thinking is instead of waiting for Apple's fix with 8.1 while having a device that's dead-in-the-water, it might be worth to keep trying a few setting change combinations.

It seems many of the reported issues point to the 5ghz channel setting on the router. I also noticed that those with Apple Extreme routers may have different results than those with other routers. My thoughts are to try a few changes on your router's channel and other settings, and also recommended IOS device settings changes until possibly the right combination might work for you. It's looks like a complicated glitch involving the handshake between the IOS device and the router. So I say keep trying.

Update: per next post, I see Apple just released 8.1. Hopefully no need to tinker now that that's out.

Apple Insider is wrong. All the symptoms are still there. At least on my iPad Air.

This update, as with the 8.0.1, is focussed on adding the functionality to make money for Apple, not to fix problems for people from whom they have already extracted the money.

The symptoms I refer to, for those who didn't read pervious posts on this subject, are extremely long ping times to the router (time taken to send a small packet and get a response back). Any other device on the same access point sees ping times of around one millisecond. The ipad sees times in the twenty to thirty milliseconds, with outliers in the hundred millisecond range. As time goes on the ping times increase and outliers stretch out into a thousand milliseconds or so. At this point, you start to see dropped packets, which gets worse and worse until almost all packets are dropped and the occasional one gets through with times in the hundreds of milliseconds.

Restarting the wifi driver, either by turning it off and on again, or by making a configuration change which causes a restart, e.g. All the "solutions" seen throughout this and other threads, such as changing DNS settings etc., will start the process over, and you will get somewhere from several minutes to several hours of pathetic functionality before it collapses again.
