Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Thing is some of us noted wifi issues BEFORE IOS8, they just got significantly worse and more unpredictable afterwards.  Apple have NEVER wanted anyone using a wifi router they didn't make.

Still the same issue here on my ipad 3 after updating to 8.1, "Incorrect Password" on my network when secured, or "Unable to join" when I open it up. Still able to get on line if I go through my ipad mini hot spot on cell data. Wish I could revert to 7 as it had no problems then, and I don't need Apple Pay or health stuff on my ipad 3 anyways.

Apple Insider was just quoting Apple's release notes.  I have updated my iPhone 6, which was not having problems and my iPad Air which was.  They both have good speeds using Ookla and reasonable pings.  I will give them time to see if the connection remains stable.

I am still awaiting for the update on my iPad Mini and iPad 3.  These old processors are really slow.

Strangely, I could not do the update on iTunes as I kept getting the message that there was no server.  Over Wifi, it worked fine, if more slowly.

The problem with Ookla is that it is designed to measure throughput, and specifically designed to work with high latency connections, so it will show pretty good results even if your connection to your wifi access point is terrible ... Until too many packets are getting dropped.

Grab any tool that will do a ping, and look at the times to your access point/router. Remember that the transit time between antennas is speed of light. No network propagation times involved. Next, take any other device connected to that same AP and try from there. Typically, you will see sub-millisecond ping times for most devices. With an IOS device suffering from this problem, you will see times 30x or more worse. That time is all delay inside the wifi driver. The longer you run without a re-start of the wifi sub-system, the worse the times will get. They can be pretty bad, and Ookla will still be reporting food numbers because it is designed to work with high latency connections.

I Just did the update to 8.1 on my iPad air.  Checked speed and it's back up to where it should be!  If this holds up, I guess I'll have to say sorry for all the bad words!

For the first time since ios8 was released, my ipad mini retina has stayed on the 5Ghz freq for more than 10 minutes...so far so good. After installing ios8.1 i had to switch 5ghz on and off a few times until it connected to it. Hopefully this is the end of a pretty sh*t bunch of updates. Credit to everyone who kept others informed on this forum. A HUGE F*CK YOU TO APPLE FOR BEING SUCH USELESS MONGS. I hope you lose many many customers. Tw*ts.

8.1 did not solve my issue. Have 2 iPhone 6 now, one 16Gb and one 128GB, the 128 works fine using DHCP, the 16GB does not connect to Wifi with DHCP, connects fine with manual settings. The 16GB connects to 2 other networks I tried using DHCP, not my home network though, a brand new Apple Airport Extreme.

So, you want ping times.  All times are in milliseconds.  Three tries for each device.

My Mac Pro, hard wired to Asus RT-N66U; 14, 19, 16

iPad Air, Wifi to above router; 22, 20, 20

    iPad 3, same Wifi; 23, 22, 25

    iPad Mini, same Wifi; 23, 22, 24

    iPhone 6, same Wifi; 20, 22, 24

    iPhone 5, same Wifi; 22, 21, 20

I have never seen sub-millisecond pings on my system.  The results are extremely consistent, as are the download and upload speeds.  Obviously, the hard wired is faster.  So far, my connections have remained consistent, so I am content.  If it remains so tomorrow, I will recommend everybody to move from iOS 7 to iOS 8.1.

speak for yourself, mines are actually going much worst, either fail or are in the order of 800 ms.... Download speeds are under 1mb, and I'm on a commercial 100Mbit line, where wired I get under 25ms and close to 8MB/s...   Both iPhone 5 and IPad mini 2 are worst after updating. Muuuuch worst, in fact to post this I had to disconnect from the wifi and just use the LTE connection.

What are you pinging? Is that the access point/router itself, or something else?

I don't have my iPad handy right now, but there are some snapshots of ping times on that earlier in this thread.

Here is the same thing from my Macbook Pro. The AP is pretty busy right now, hence the somewhat variable times:

When things are quiet, sub-ms times are more usual. If I ran the same test on the iPad I would be seeing 30ms to 40ms with one on ten up to 200ms.

Stil have the F****ing same Wi-Fi problems! Slow, not working and as soon as I charge my iPhone 5S or iPad I need to reset my Netgear WDR 4300 router!
I almost feel like throwing these devices out of the window!! Very very disappointed!
