Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I Am seeing a real mixture of replies to the ios8.1. Update as to whether it did or did not fix the wifi issues.  But hardly anyone is stating what their set up was?  I'm fearful of upgrading from ios8.0.1 unless I can confirm my particular scenario is included in the success stories.

I Currently have 2 iPad minis accessing wifi through a linksys router.

HAving said that, I also don't recall seeing the exact issues I have had reported here in the first place.  When I switch off my device I need to reset my router because the password information held in my iPad memory is "wrong" and when I enter the correct one (without a hard reset) the network refuses me access.  It is almost as if the iPad is sending completely random information and not what I actually type.

THis his definitely only started with ios8.0.

PRior to to that I have had frequent drop off of service normally when I am in an area with multiple wifi signals overlapping.  I've turned off the ask to join networks feature, but it still consistently looses connection every single day, and did under ios7 and earlier.

Ok for me, iOS 8.1 has fixed the Wifi issues.

Working on 5Ghz as should be.

(iPad Air - BT home hub5/infinity).

Applecare contact me about 2 weeks ago and I installed their required Wifi monitoring sofware on all my 5 ios devices. Since that I've talked to them 5 times with their engineers and sent also all devices log files. Last contact was 4 days ago and they told to wait upcoming update (8.1)

Since 14 hours ago I updated all my devices to 8.1 and seems everything concerning Wifi is fixed. Just for anycase I reset network settings as well and rebooted routers.

As far as I see all devices are good and 8.1 is in generally much snappier than 8.0.2

I would recommend to upgrade to 8.1

Finally, my iPad Air + BT wifi is working fine again!!! 8.1 fixed the issue. Previously, my wifi would drop, or slow down. You have to exit the app for it to pick it up.

Updated my iPad Air to 8.1 yesterday and it worked fine.  This morning after working about 10 minutes, it has dropped wifi again.  I am quickly losing faith in Apple and its ability to fix this problem.

8.1 *seems* to fix my iPad Air, but definitely has not fixed the problem on my wife's 6+.  My iPhone6 shows up today, we'll see how it goes.  My router is a Netgear R6250, FWIW.  Connecting to the 2.4GHz network seems fine, it's the 5GHz network that's the problem.

I seem to have fixed my issue. I have Iphone 5s and had no wifi issue when i was using IOS7. Since upgraded to IOS8, I had intermittent dropouts. I know it was an issue with the Iphone 5s with IOS8 because I also have a ipad2 with IOS7 and the ipad have no wifi issue.

So i tried pinging both ipad and iphone from my laptop and saw that the iphone have LOTS of packet drops.

I have a ASUS RT-N66U router and i had to disable "ENABLE WMM APSD" This setting is under wireless -> professional. After the fore mention change, i have very little packet drops and did not experience the intermittent dropout.

I hope this helps someone! It was very frustrating for me....

You might try updating the firmware (if there are updates available) for your router, and then reset the router to factory settings. We did this on Sunday and then dowloaded ios 8.1 on Monday. With iOS 8.1, we were able to go back to 5 GHz and back up to normal speeds with no issues. HTH

I shouldn't have to jack up my network to fix a bug Apple clearly introduced with iOS8.  iOS7 devices worked fine.  Windows devices work fine.  My Macbook works fine.  My Android devices work fine.  I don't think the problem is my router...

I totally agree with Franklin7777.  8.1 is not fix.  My iPad Air continues

to drop its internet connection.  Currently it's just a large paperweight.

Mine is similar to yours Andros Tempest. It's giving me "incorrect password" when secured, or "cannot connect" when unsecured network. Only network it works on I've found is at my work which is run by IT so I don't know any of the settings, or works via another ipad with cell service hotspot.

Not a 5 ghz problem for mine either as I'm running a single 2.4ghz band Netgear router.

Ipad 3, worked for years with no issues until IOS 8.

8.1 is NOT....repeat NOT a fix.  If anything, my iPhone 6 is worse.  Today I could not connect to protected wifi at all.  Same issues of no access points seen for periods of time.  Wifi hanging, even though strong signal is indicated.  Facebook hangs when trying to access network.  Email hangs when trying to pull new mail.  Forced to kill and startup wifi again.

This is pathetic.  Do we have to wait for 8.2 now?  Those who said it fixes everything...give it time.  Your old friend Dead Wifi will be back.

Upgraded to iOS 8.1 on my 5s.  Still seeing the following problems:

    1. Dropping off WiFi.  Happens at work all the time.  I'll unlock my phone and it will switch from WiFi to LTE and then back to WiFi (eventually).

    2. Apps complaining of no network connectivity or network timeouts.  If I retry it then works.

    3. Reduced WiFi range - The WiFi range is still much worse than it was under iOS 7.1.2.

Problems I've had in the past with iOS 8, but haven't seen yet (doesn't mean it's fixed, just that I haven't gotten them yet):

    1. Connected to WiFi, but no data: I'll be connected to WiFi, but apps can't send/receive data.  This requires turning WiFi off and on and if that doesn't work, restarting the phone.  This usually takes a few days after restarting the phone to show up.

    2. Loss of all data (including LTE).  I saw this once with iOS 8.0.2 after my phone had been gone for about 10 days without restarting.  Under iOS 8 it was rare to go more than a few days without needing to restart my phone, unlike iOS 7.1.2 where I could go months without restarting.  Have no idea if this is fixed or not.

Why does Apple have to update so often? Except to fix problems, I'm guessing it's getting on everyone's nerves. Maybe if they wouldn't introduce flashy new features that fewer people need or use so often, the software could stay stable for a while. Someone previously addressed this here too.

I think once I'm on a stable IOS level, I'm not moving. I feel like I'm spending half my life tweaking their bad updates to get things to work.

Yeah I am fed up with their constant updates of ios. I wish they would stay longer cycles and of given ios 7 two or three years so it was very mature. It's Russian roulette that their new iOS updates will work properly. Trouble is very soon some apps will be iOS 8 only so you get kind of forced into it. Hate their updates.

for me 8.1 fixed nothing. I'm beginning to wonder if they will ever address it now
