OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 cannot connect to shared mac on network

Since v10.9.4 update, my MacBook Pro cannot connect to my G5 (Intel) Mac on the same network. No network/sharing configs had been changed when the problem showed up. I have finally been able to establish a connection to the MBP public folder from the G5, but cannot do so vice-versa.

The following Console messages appear when attempting to connect and receiving a "Connection Failed" message, or "There was a problem connecting to the server "blahblah's computer". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.":

1) Browse to and double-click to connect to G5 that shows up:

9/20/14 3:41:59.862 PM NetAuthSysAgent[540]: FindValidIPAddress - connect failed socket 0, optionValue 60

9/20/14 3:42:40.056 PM NetAuthSysAgent[540]: ERROR: AFP_GetServerInfo - connect failed 64

9/20/14 3:42:40.057 PM sharingd[186]: SDSharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 64

2) Try to connect using AFP address:

9/20/14 3:43:54.980 PM NetAuthSysAgent[540]: AFP error -1 mapped to EIO

9/20/14 3:43:54.980 PM NetAuthSysAgent[540]: ERROR: AFP_GetServerInfo - connect failed 5

9/20/14 3:43:54.980 PM NetAuthSysAgent[540]: AFP error -1 mapped to EIO

3) Browse to, double-click on G5 that shows up, then click "Connect as":

9/20/14 3:55:06.252 PM NetAuthSysAgent[561]: FindValidIPAddress - connect failed socket 0, optionValue 60

9/20/14 3:55:08.372 PM NetAuthSysAgent[561]: FindValidIPAddress - connect failed socket 0, optionValue 60

9/20/14 3:55:46.665 PM NetAuthSysAgent[561]: ERROR: AFP_GetServerInfo - connect failed 64

9/20/14 3:55:48.806 PM NetAuthSysAgent[561]: ERROR: AFP_GetServerInfo - connect failed 64

Please advise on how to remedy this irritating problem with what used to be such a simple networking maneuver.

Thanks in advance.

I'm getting the same error messages when trying to connect over a VPN to a Mountain Lion server, from a Yosemite (10.10.2) iMac. The same Yosemite iMac at the same time has no trouble connecting to a Snow Leopard server on the same network.

By the way, there is no such thing as a "G5 (Intel) Mac". What you have is a Mac Pro tower. The G5 processors predated Intel. A lot of people tend to use "G5" as a generic term for a Mac aluminum tower. Why does it matter? Because if you not had not said "Intel", you would be getting replies having to do with the age of the computer in question.
