Sep 28, 2014 7:07 AM in response to labgeek70by TonyP_StPaul,This article from gigaom explains the problem and offers some "workarounds" (Not really workarounds if you're set on using exchange). https://gigaom.com/2013/07/05/push-alternatives-for-your-gmail-messages-on-ios/
So anyone upgrading from their older iPhone 4S to a iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus (and iPads after iPad 3 or 4) you will lose your ability to use MS Exchange Server sync with your free gmail accounts. I found out the hard way that you will also lose it on an older device if you setup 2-step verification on your gmail account. I read some reports that Palm WebOS phones still work with the Exchange Server and Gmail, but that maybe because WebOS is open sourced now, somGoogle may not have a choice.
Let's be clear this is a Google / Gmail change, they discontinued another service because people weren't using the Gmail app on the iphone, however they said they did it because it wasn't secure. I have a google apps account for a business and exchange still works for that account, So they must want people to either pay for an Email account or switch to Android. The company I work for uses the native. iOS Mail app with Lotus Notes, and will be soon with MS Outlook, and Microsoft has no problems with Office 365 via Exchange to an iOS device.
if you hav multiple email addresses and moving all of them to custom domains and google apps isn't an option, you might want to try creating one Google Apps account then creating alias domains to create other email addresses all accessible via Exchange and the iOS Mail app, (i.e. user@primarydomain.com; user2@sub1.primarydomain.com; userX@subx.primarydomain.com) Google still allows you to do this. I've heard you can have up to 10 alias domains.

Oct 4, 2014 6:19 PM in response to labgeek70by Jsd49,labgeek70,
I used your above incoming and outgoing servers, but i'm still getting the "Cannot Get Mail -- The user name or password for "imap.gmail.com" is incorrect." message when I try to set up the account. I've confirmed both are correct, but I get this message no matter if I'm trying to set up a Google/Gmail account, an Other account or an Exchange account. Same error every time. Any ideas?

Oct 14, 2014 4:05 PM in response to rockmyplimsoulby mckinasole,Even though Google stopped supporting it for new devices, it will continue to work if you restore from a backup on new device. I have done it multiple times with 5 or 6 different phones. If you have to set it up as a new account then your screwed. But if you created the account before their limitation and backed the config up, you'll continue to be able to use it. The issue seems to be something else. I have the exact same problem. Works on my iPad not on the iPhone 6. I don't have a limit of exchange clients with my corporate email and it is working just fine, it seems to be just my google APPS accounts on exchange.

That all sounds great as a replacement for Exchange but with OTher you loose Calendar and Reminders sync options.
In this case any idea how to configure to add the missing gmail account calendar on iphone6 ?
labgeek70
Please forgive me. I was so excited I put google. It should be gmail
incoming: IMAP.gmail.com
outgoing: SMTP.gmail.com

Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar>Add New Account>Gmail. If you only want to enable calendars, you can do that. Because I use the Gmail app, i only have contacts and calendars selected.

There is also the CalDAV method to access your calendars. By using this method, you won't have push, but you will able to keep the colors you have set for each calendar. (This might just me being picky, but I like to have consistent calendar colors between devices. )
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Other > Add CalDAV Account
- Server: google.com
- Username: Enter the email address of the associated Google account.
- Password: Enter the password that is associated with the Google account from above.
- Description: Enter a description of the account.
Select the blue Next button from the top of the page. (If any of the required fields are missing, such as username or password, then the Next button will be grayed out.)
Next comes the toggle switch page for both Calendars and Reminders, then select Save to finish the process.
If you have multiple calendars associated with the account, use Google's SyncSelect (www.google.com/calendar/syncselect) to pick which ones you want to see on your devices.

The colors appear just fine with the standard Google/Gmail set up.

Nov 6, 2014 9:41 AM in response to Meg St._Clairby AggieLJ,So it does! When I originally set up my calendars on my 3GS (way back in the day) the mismatched colors drove me crazy... Glad that issue has been fixed since then!

After Google dropped Exchange support for free accounts, they seem to have "fixed" a few other things in IMAP.

Dec 2, 2014 7:28 PM in response to labgeek70by florida6+,if you have 2 STEP VERIFICATION enabled on gmail, you have to generate APP SPECIFIC PASSWORD.
Your regular gmail password will NOT work.
I generated an app specific password on google accounts and its working well on my iPhone 6+.
Hope that helps !

Dec 5, 2014 5:23 AM in response to TonyP_StPaulby MCDBA,This is not true. This is the Third Iphone I have had in a year and I can tell you each time I had to completely delete the account from my new phone and completely add the account again with the 2-Step-verifacation.
- Open Gmail from a browser and only sign into the account you're trying to add. Be sure to be signed out of all your other accounts
- Go to this link: https://accounts.google.com/b/0/displayunlockcaptcha and click Continue.
- Add your account to your phone with a new application specific password.
If that isn't working, you may also need to enable Access for less secure apps. That option is found on your Security page of your Google account, under "Access for less secure apps."
