Q: gmail exchange ios 8 issue

Got a brand new iphone 5S.  Entered my Apple ID and all my settings and apps installed and everything was great.

Downloaded / installed iOS 8 and everything was fine.

The next day, my Gmail Exchange has stopped working.  It IS working fine on my ipad which i also updated to iOS 8.

i have tried every possible troubleshooting measure I could find.

I have rebooted.  I have wiped and restarted the device while connected to iTunes.

I have checked google settings.  I have checked Gmail settings.  Ipad continues to work but iphone doesn't.

While it's not a huge issue to use the Gmail app, it's just an annoyance not to be able to have all mail in one app now.

Any other suggestions?

iPhone 5, iOS 8

Once again we are faced with completely removing the account from a restored iPhone.  This is the Third iPhone I have had in a year and I can tell you each time I had to completely delete the account from my new phone and completely add the account again with the 2-Step-verifacation.

    1. Open Gmail from a browser and only sign into the account you're trying to add. Be sure to be signed out of all your other accounts
    2. Go to this link: https://accounts.google.com/b/0/displayunlockcaptcha and click Continue.
    3. Add your account to your phone with a new application specific password.

If that isn't working, you may also need to enable Access for less secure apps. That option is found on your Security page of your Google account, under "Access for less secure apps."

I am on a new iPhone 6 and trying to set up my previously working Gmail set-up from my 4s so I can send from a custom domain name. All was working before so the settings over at Gmail are OK.

I start setting up from the “Other” option and enter incoming and outgoing servers with a correct Gmail password. I have disabled two factor authentication in Gmail and also tried with the Gmail option to allow less secure devices. I get the message “The IMAP server “imap.gmail.com” is not responding …

When I set-up via the “Google” option, all is working fine with the same credentials…

I removed the mailbox several times and starting over again, rebooting the phone with no avail.

    Anyone else having this issue?

    This worked for me.

I used a computer browser instead for ease of navigation.

Go to your Google accounts settings, scroll down and click on App Password.

    To generate password:

    Select app: Mail

    Select device: iPhone

Use the generated password instead of your regular Google password to set up your Gmail account as before.

No need to set up as "other" account.

    Hope this is clear.

This special "app password" worked for me. I just got a new iPhone 6 (replacing an iPhone 5) and it was also not accessing gmail (despite still working from my iPad). I had two-step verification turned-on and preferred not to turn it off. As florida6+ said, all you have to do is go to the gmail site and generate an app-specific 16-character password. In fact if you try to turn off two-step verification you'll get a pop-up with a link that takes you to the right page for generating the password. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en&ctx=ch_b%2F0%2FSmsAuthSe ttings This link will take you there as well. After an hour trying to sort this out other ways, the 16-character app password worked on the first try.

I successfully setup my gmail account as "other" mail account, but I still cannot use the "PUSH" option. It still does the FETCH for me. How to get the "PUSH" working?

To get push, you'll need to use the Gmail app.

    iPhone 6. iOS 8.3

Is this something recent? I used to get PUSH Gmail just fine on my iPhone. Now I'm lucky if it works once a day. When it doesn't work I get the dreaded 'imap.gmail.com' error message.

I was actually working with Google support on this and sent in some logs using itools but support hasn't responded in a while. I've already gone through ALL of the diagnostic steps multiple times. I know it's not my account settings or my phone. I just don't know whether to blame Apple or Google. In the logs I submitted to Google I see my phone complaining about a 'missing password'. Here is a snip of the log file.

<Warning>: -[MFPowerController _duetAttributeForAccountWithUniqueId:discretionary:]: Could not create duet attribute: (null)May 14 19:50:09 iPhone MobileMail[16060] <Warning>: ERROR: MFMessageErrorDomain/Missing Password - No password provided for “Gmail”.

However, I KNOW the password is correct. For one thing, once or twice a day it actually sends a receives for a bit (without changing the password). Also whenever I remove and recreate on the phone it sends and receives for a while (maybe 12-36 hours) before it goes down to only working once or twice a day. I have a Nexus 7 tablet that has my Gmail account on it and does not have this issue. I don't want to download the iPhone Gmail app because I like a streamlined email experience with all my mail in one place which the built-in iPhone mail app provides.

Gmail hasn't provided push for free accounts on iPhone through the native app since January 2013.

I run all of my email accounts through Gmail (it has a nice feature where it can fetch mail from other accounts). I started doing that years ago because I had an email account that was only available as POP.
