Q: gmail exchange ios 8 issue

Got a brand new iphone 5S.  Entered my Apple ID and all my settings and apps installed and everything was great.

Downloaded / installed iOS 8 and everything was fine.

The next day, my Gmail Exchange has stopped working.  It IS working fine on my ipad which i also updated to iOS 8.

i have tried every possible troubleshooting measure I could find.

I have rebooted.  I have wiped and restarted the device while connected to iTunes.

I have checked google settings.  I have checked Gmail settings.  Ipad continues to work but iphone doesn't.

While it's not a huge issue to use the Gmail app, it's just an annoyance not to be able to have all mail in one app now.

Any other suggestions?

iPhone 5, iOS 8

I am having this exact same issue. I purchased a new iPhone 6, and everything was working fine until today when my gmail, which is set up through exchange, stopped working. I deleted, re-added, double checked the password. Still will not work through exchange. However, it does work if I add it as a non-exchange email, which is not ideal because I would like to be able to use the "push" function and other functions that setting up through exchange offers.

In your case and the OP's case, getting a new device means you can not use Exchange for Gmail on the new device.  Google stopped supporting "Google Sync" (which is based on Microsoft ActiveSync) on January 30th, 2013.  If you had Gmail set up as an Exchange account on your device before that time, you were able to continue using it on that device only, even if you restore it or update its iOS.

This explains why some devices still seem to work with Exchange for Gmail, and some do not.  More info here:

It worked for 24 hours then stopped.

Mine worked for 24 hours on the new device then stopped.

I'm guessing it's either a bug, or as you say....they are stopping it.

I've stopped fussing over it.  I am just using the Gmail app.  I only use Yahoo and cloud email for junk mail anyway.  It's just an annoyance.  I still love my 5s.

I had a very similar issue with my iphone 5 after installing the ios 8 update. For some reason my outgoing server settings where changed with the update. This worked for me, maybe it'll work for you. In settings and mail, go into Outgoing Mail Server, tap on smtp for gmail (smtp.gmail.com). Make sure that this is set at On as the primary server. If it's listed under Other Servers on the same screen, it should also be set as On. Any other servers shown should be set at Off. Make sure you save all your changes (some people do actually overlook this step). Hope this helps.

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!

    I've GOT IT!!!

I was using the EXCHANGE option in the list to create the account. DO NOT USE THAT.

    I used the "OTHER" option.

Specify the incoming server - imap.google.com

Specify the outgoing server - smtp-google.com

    AND IT WORKS!!!!!!!

One more thing to try, if you have 2 step verification enabled with Google, turn it off.  Once I did, it no longer gave me the errors and my email is working fine now.

    Just curious, with this method:

    • When you delete a message does it really go into Trash, or does it get Archived to All Mail?  Since there is no setting for this behavior, how do you control it?  You used to be able to control the behavior at m.google.com right from Safari on your device, but not anymore.  While I still had Gmail working with Exchange after 1/30/13, all my mail deletions were getting archived instead of trashed, so I left Exchange and never went back because there was no way to change this behavior.
    • Do you get instantaneous mail delivery? (i.e. Push)

    Hi labgeek70,

I tried this method and it told me the incoming server was wrong. Can you confirm?
