Can't scan with HP 4200 scanner/printer

I had no problems when first coupling it up to a new iMac but now it seems to scan when warming up and when you press scan it just says "done scanning selected areas". Any ideas please?

iMac, Mac OS X 10.9.4

If you are using Image Capture or Preview as the scanning application, then these applications will perform an overview scan first, which lets you see the document on the scanner glass. With the overview displayed, if you have the paper size set to Custom, then you need to select the area that you want to scan, by clicking the mouse in one corner of the document and dragging the mouse to the other. Then when you press the Scan button you will get the area that you selected. If the document is a particular size, like A4, then you can select this in the scan size window and not need to select an area to scan.

If you are using a HP scanning application, it may be similar to the above but I have no knowledge of HP software so hopefully someone else who does have a HP can offer advice to you if my information is of no help.

Thanks. Seems the answer may be not to use the HP scanning application as it does work with Image Capture and Preview but if anyone does know about the HP option I would like to know that too. It's quite frustrating that it suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason. (May have been when I did the last update but I hadn't used the scanner for a while after).
