iOS 8 Calendar on iPhone showing GMT times for new events.

Hi everyone,

Since updating my iPhone 4S to iOS 8, the Calendar app now shows all my newly added events with GMT times, and not the local time (as I am not in GMT, I am +9 hours). All my previous and existing entries are displaying normally. I have not changed any settings at all. However, if I open one of the new events and enter the events details screen, the local times are clearly displayed along with a GMT equivalent time underneath it.

I have tried changing settings but nothing shows my events in local time as it did before the upgrade to iOS 8. Any ideas? Is this a bug? Am I missing a new setting? Many thanks in advance for your help or advice.

Cheers,

James.

sorry no solution here, just jumping in to say I'm having the same issue on the 6. I hope there is a solution as this is pretty confusing.

otterit is correct that we need to take an active role to make sure Apple knows this is a major issue that needs to be addressed. In the meantime, here's an interesting article that popped up when I went over to Huffington Post to submit a story tip about this particular bug:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/05/marco-arment_n_6416540.html?fb_action_i ds=10205805732571998&fb_action_types=og.comments

From the above article: "Arment had no specific complaints about iOS, but called it 'riddled with embarrassing bugs and fundamental regressions.'"

Ya think?

I have read every single entry in this thread and NONE of the "solutions" worked for me. To be perfectly clear I had my new phone with ios 8 for 32 days and did not have this issue. I didnt make any changes or do any updates to phone and just one random day, the gmt bug got me. Nearly every day at my office a new person catches this bug (without changing any settings) and everyone is going mad! Our shared calendars are totally screwed! The only work around that is half way reasonable is to make an appointment as an all day event (ending the same day) and for some reason all day events are immune to the gmt bug.

Appointments made in gmail sync to iphone/ipad without gmt issue. Events input in iphone/ipad immediately change to gmt on device but sync to gmail correctly.

Myself and several others in my office have tried:

Verified and reverified and reverified that time zone is correct on device(s) and gmail. It doesnt say gmt anywhere.

Turning on and off time zone over ride.

Turning on and off setting time zone automatically (and every combination of the two)

Removing and reinstalling google. (several times)

Removing google and installing exchange (still had the issue)

Change default calendar to hotmail (which I dont use at all for work, etc) and still had the issue.

Switching several appointments from GMT to my time zone to see if all appts would change- they didnt

Hard reset of phone

Factory reset of phone restoring from backup.

I am sure there are other suggestions we tried as well but none worked.

This is a bug and it is ridiculous Apple would even dare to imply this feature is intentional- especially since the problem doesnt impact the icloud calendar.

Zak456, I understand the All Day toggle work around is not perfect and that you have to be careful about the day and time when you reset it. but I found it the easiest of the work arounds not including using a 3rd party app/calendar like you mentioned.

I do have a question about the Sunshine Calendar app. Do you know if after you install Sunshine and it syncs up with all your calendars (iOS, Google, Outlook), if you delete the app, will it remove all calendar entries from the other calendars ((iOS, Google, Outlook)? I had tried a third party calendar years ago - not Sunshine - and when I deleted it from my device, it removed all the calendar entries as I guess the main iOS calendar thought I was removing those entries from my calendar. That would be my only concern about a third party calendar app.

Thanks for any info if you have any on this issue.

Jan 10, 2015 6:17 PM in response to Gator5000e

I tested to see that if I created entries in the Sunshine app and then removed the Sunshine app from my I6, would the events remain on the default cal app. All prior events stayed scheduled even after I deleted the app. So if you decide to go the third party sunshine route and then you wish to delete it after Apple fixes the problem, your created events SHOULD remain. But why worry about it? If it's eventually fixed by Apple and you don't want to use Sunshine anymore then just bury (move) the Sunshine icon in some created box somewhere with other unused apps. Then it'll still sync when you use the Original cal app.

And as far as using the third party app fix makes Apple decide not to fix the bug and that is going to make some of you absolutely crazy mad at Apple (JG?), then maybe some of you should really start a hobby because you're just a bit over the top with Apple. Their products will still be superior to the competition even if they aren't perfect. I do agree that this bug is a pain in the *** but this string gets a little crazy! Nothing personal, just suggesting some people may want to recheck the amount of time thier spending being upset at a phone/iPad App lol !

I fully agree with this being totally unacceptable on Apple's part. Both the bug and its handling.

I have found a practical way of working around it in the sense of it not interfering with my work but I'd like to know if I'm missing something.

From what I've come to encounter, there are two issues with this bug:

* iOS, and calendar in OSX shows the GMT times in addition to my local times

* when editing an event and trying to change either the starting time or duration, iOS SHOWS me the GMT time and basically wants me to change the time based on GMT hours

While the first point is annoying, it isn't really that much of a hit to my productivity.

For the second one, is a different story because that directly impacts my work. For that, though, the workaround is simple: never click edit when trying to change the starting and finishing hours, and instead hold tap the event in the day view and drag or resize the event on screen as needed.

A question is:

How else is this bug affecting you that I should be wary of?

PS.

I have to say that this situation kind of reminds me when I used Gentoo Linux and had to read a lot to figure out what to tweak to make things work.. I switched to the Apple ecosystem and successfully stopped managing systems and turned them into productive tools. Disgracefully I've started seeing these kind of "wrinkles" more and more and it just makes me figure What's going on and to hope it doesn't become too common

Jan 11, 2015 10:54 AM in response to Natzoo

Sorry natzoo, but that doesn't "fix it." There are several of us who have spent far longer than four hours over the past 3+ months working on this. There is no easy simple fix. It's amusing how often someone will show up at the end of an ongoing 480+ comment support thread and proclaim that they are the first person to have discovered "THE FIX!!"

I don't know if you are referring to something displaying on your MacBook calendar, or if you think you have discovered a fix for the actual bug being discussed in this thread, which occurs when buggy code in the iOS operating system causes your appointments to pick up the time zone set on your server's time clock and then transpose your appointments to that time. If it's the latter, which is what is being discussed here....I can assure you that you didn't figure out how to "fix it."

Here's an article about what causes this bug:

http://blog.appriver.com/2014/12/ios-8-calendar-events-display-dual-time-zones/

It has nothing to do with some setting on your MacBook calendar. People who don't even use a Mac are experiencing this bug. This is due to poorly written code in iOS that Apple released without any quality testing whatsoever. The only people who can "fix it" are the software developers at Apple.

Jan 11, 2015 7:50 PM in response to JG in SB

I can confirm this. I first noticed the bug immediately after upgrading my iPhone and iPad to IOS8. Both were syncing with an Exchange server in EST. Was not using Google Calendar at the time, only Exchange. When I created calendar entries in MDT and PST, they showed up with EST in parentheses. I subsequently left the company that used Exchange and started using Google Calendar. Ever since then, calendar entries show up with GMT in parentheses. I submitted a trouble report using your template. Thanks to everyone for their hard work on root cause and getting Apple's attention.

Jan 12, 2015 12:22 AM in response to Jeroen Kuper

Yes, I have the same problem. I rarely add appointments to the Calendar on iOS 8 preferring to use Calendar in OSX Yosemite. The appointments all appear in iOS 8 as GMT. They are synced over Google Calendar. On the Mac side, I see nothing in the appointment suggesting that it's for a different time zone. It's all on iOS 8.

Jan 12, 2015 12:44 AM in response to James Barber

Count me in as another experiencing the GMT bug. I first noticed this bug only AFTER playing around with the "Time Zone Override" toggle in settings. Before that, I believe, my calendar was fine. I've tried many troubleshooting steps described in this thread including resetting the phone, add and removing my calendars, verifying all timezone settings on my Mac, and more. Nothing so far has worked. Most certainly this is a bug in iOS 8. Here's to hoping for a fix soon.

Jan 12, 2015 2:16 AM in response to James Barber

Count me in as well. Syncing to Google Calendar, so all new events are assigned the GMT time zone when they sync to Google -- regardless of what time zone I have assigned them originally (even one that's not my native time zone).

I noticed that if I put the phone in Airplane mode before creating the event, it is -- initially -- created perfectly with the right time zone; taking the phone out of Airplane mode allows it to sync to Google and that's when the GMT assignment takes effect. In addition, if I assign a non-native time zone to the event, it doesn't get passed to Google either! Example: I'm in the US Eastern time zone and so I've set my default time zone in Google Calendar to US Eastern (GMT-5). I create an event with Calendar app in timezone GMT+1. After it syncs to Google, it's in GMT on the phone and GMT-5 on Google's server. The correct time zone information is lost completely. I imagine most users with the problem will see the same behavior.

Contacted Apple, created a ticket, conveyed all this info with screen shots etc. Now all we can do is wait and hope, I guess. I too have switched to the Sunrise Calendar app to bypass the issue, and may stick with it.
