Q: iOS 8 Calendar on iPhone showing GMT times for new events.

What you're seeing is the offset from GMT. To the best of my knowledge, Google (and many other apps) have always displayed timezones that way. Eastern is, for example, GMT- 5:00, meaning GMT minus 5 hours.

Maybe so, but I've never seen it show up in my ical as such. Google and ical have to work together on this. It's an unacceptable problem. It needs fixing sooner rather than later.

The way that Google is displaying the names of the time is not the problem. It displayed them that way long before this issue arose. It's just a label.

Google calendar has had a love affair with android now scuttlebutt has it that Google is soon releasing a new calendar app for iOS.  Hopefully this will solve the time zone changing problems.  "This will be the first time Google has offered a dedicated iOS app for Calendar, and it looks rather snazzy indeed."  from thenextweb.com 

I not only changes the time zone for me, it also changes the time as well.  Very frustrating since I have to correct by editing each entry.

Just wanted to say thanks for the tips (I've tried a few without success) and efforts in getting Apple to resolve this.

Am eagerly waiting for the next iOS update with high hopes.

Wanted to provide an update on this. I was having this issue on my 5S for a few months, starting in late 2014. I upgraded a 5S to a 6 recently, and both are running iOS 8.1.2.

I backed up the 5S to my computer directly, and then restored it on the new 6, and I'm glad to announce that the GMT problem IS GONE!!! Thank goodness. If this thing comes back, I'm going to cry. I have no idea if backing up your iPhone and restoring it will help or not, but just reporting what has worked for me. Good luck... this is a terrible bug.

@cowboybuddah:  what happens when you create new appointments in your iPhone 6 now?  Test it out and let us know.  Thanks.

Damnit, I spoke to soon. I swear it was fixed... I started playing with my inactive iPhone 5S just now, and deleted all the gmail accounts, etc. The problem is gone with the native iPhone calendar app with no connected accounts. Then I added my main gmail account, and the problem reappeared. The test event I created synced with my new iPhone and lo and behold I still have the same GMT program. Damnit!!

I'm not sure if my playing around with the 5S triggered it on the 6, or I had it all along on my 6 (24 hours now) but didn't notice it. Regardless, for me at least, it seems like a gmail issue for sure. I'm back in the boat guys!!

Sadly, I cannot believe that Apple would fix such a major mistake in such a small software update as 8.1.3.  I'm not holding my breath, even if I am on a boat with you all and I'm syncing.

@cowboybuddah:  What triggered it is appointment data going up to your Google Calendar server and then syncing back down to your iOS device.  The way this bug works, is that it causes any appointment created on an iOS device to acquire the time zone that the clock of your hosted calendar server is set to...which is GMT on most Google and Exchange servers.  It then transposes your appointments to whatever that time zone is.

This is discussed at length in the thread but every few weeks a new bunch of people find this thread and they go about trying to "figure this out" from scratch.  I'm not trying to be snarky etc... I am trying to save you and others who might not scroll more than one or two pages back some time.

This bug is not generated by Google.  It is generated by iOS.  How do I know that for sure you ask?  I don't use Google for anything and I have this bug.  I use Exchange.  I reported this to AppRiver, my Exchange host in early November.  They spent a bunch of time working on it with Apple Engineering Tech Support and Apple confirmed...in writing...that this is a bug in iOS 8.  Of course some other guy at Apple says it is a "feature" and this is the "expected behavior," but if you read through this thread one thing that will become evident is that Apple's internal communications among its tech support staff are p1ss poor.

Follow this thread for a few days and watch new people show up and proclaim the "Found the FIX!!!" and that they are "pretty sure this is not a bug in iOS 8 but it is a bug with Google Calendar."

Sorry that it came back for you, but your experience simply further confirms this is a bug in iOS.  The only people who can fix it are the engineers at Apple, and several of us have been informed they are in fact working on a fix.

Keep your fingers crossed that the fix is part of iOS 8.1.3 which is coming out any day now....

Just added my classes to Calendar and noticed the same error everyone here is talking about. Hope it gets fixed soon.

I've discovered a temporary workaround for Google Calendar users until Apple fixes the bug...    Go to http://www.google.com/calendar in the Safari browser on your iDevice and add appointments on the web interface. When transferred over to the iOS calendar app, it does not include the GMT time zone.

As a temporary workaround for those using Google Calendar, here's some screen shots of my 2-step approach.

1. Open Safari on your phone and navigate to http://google.com/calendar - login if necessary. Click the "+" icon near the upper-right corner.

2. Fill-in the desired calendar item details, then click "Save". The new saved item will sync correctly to the iOS Calendar without GMT problems.
