iMessage is not activating (may or may not be iOS8 related)

I updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 8 and experienced no issues until yesterday when I sent a text to another iPhone user and it was sent as an SMS text. I didn't think much of it until I looked at my iMessage settings and iMessage was turned off. I turned it on and it said "Waiting for activation...". Roughly 8 hours later it was still waiting for activation. This morning I turned it on and off, ensured I was signed into iCloud, powered the phone on/off, and checked my iPad and MacBook. My iPhone is the only device I am experiencing any problems with and I cannot figure out how to fix it or what may be causing this. Does anyone have any ideas about what the problem is and how it may be corrected?

Thank you for the information.

I've tried everything on the list, except waiting 24 hours. It will be nearly 24 hours since I first noticed that iMessage was turned off, and once I turned it on, I did not try using iMessage again for about 8-9 hours (it was still displaying "Waiting for activation..."). I can turn it off and on and leave it that way for 24 hours without cycling off/on during that time. If that does not work, I will call Apple. Any other thoughts as to what it could be?
