Q: Itunes playcount too high

Hi there. I just downloaded the latest Itunes (for Windows) and updated my Ipod Touch (gen 5) to iOS 8, and now every time I play a song (on my Ipod), the play count won't get updated properly. Listening a song once increases the playcount randomly. Sometimes it increases with 1, but in many cases, it increases with 2, 3 or 5 or even up to 20. I never had this issue before. The playcount was always spot on. Now, it is total trash. Why is this and how can I fix this?

Note: only happens on my Ipod. If I play a song on Itunes itself (on my computer), the playcount increases properly.

Thanks in advance!

randy98mtu:  you say that you were speaking to someone from Apple...what were next steps and/or when were you to be given a status?

I am not having a problem with older tracks, but rather than ones that have been recently added.  It's adding the playcount from the device to the playcount already established in iTunes, and it's doing it twice...the song starts on my device, I sync to iTunes and the playcount is doubled, then when I sync again after the song completes, it adds one to the doubled playcount.

Yes, I used the link  a few pages back to contact customer support.  I have emailed him more details a few times and he has called me back a few times.  I emailed him this morning to see if I could get the beta.  He said it almost certainly fixes the bug.  He doesn't know when it will be released but said it should be soon.  I suspect one of the next 2 Tuesdays?  The sooner the better.

I've been monitoring this thread for a few days now.  I haven't synced my phone since the problem became a big issue.  I have several playlists based on playcounts exclusively so out of my 10k + tracks in my library don't get neglected and get played often to maintain variety.  I now have been downloading from my purchased items to change the music on my iphone and deleting songs manually.  This is irritating and I am going to have to charge up my trusty old 3rd Gen touch.  They seem to be very blasé about the whole issue.   It is quite annoying.  Thanks to you and all the others in this thread for your hard campaigning.

I'm really hoping this issue is fixed with 8.1.1.  I just looked at the notes for the 8.1.1 beta and I didn't see anything about it.  Maybe I didn't look well enough, but I would think iTunes would've had its own bolded section in the outline...and it wasn't found by my eyes.  *sigh*

I just synced my iPhone 4 times consecutively.  Without playing any music, the play count of one song that I was monitoring went up 2 plays for every synch.  A couple of times iTunes said it had to restart the synch so the play count was incremented again!

I just played a song for the first time and it went from 0 plays to 4. Sync failed a few times, then I reset the phone and tried again, successfully. bluenose56 gave me the clue to resolve the problem for myself, and perhaps others. He wrote: "A couple of times iTunes said it had to restart the synch so the play count was incremented again!"

Indeed. My iPhone sync has been totally unreliable since iOS 8. I don't even try wifi anymore, and even USB fails routinely. The only way I know to ensure a correct sync the first time is to relaunch iTunes, restart the iPhone, and plug the iPhone into the Mac.

So, I had that song that went from 0 to 4 after attempting to sync 4 times until a complete sync was made. Without unplugging the phone I played another unplayed song, and since I hadn't unplugged the iPhone the sync performed correctly. 1 play count was recorded.

Then I unplugged the phone, played another unplayed song, and plugged it back in. iTunes didn't mind that time, and synced on the first try. 1 play count.

Repeat: unplug phone, play an unplayed song, plug it back in sync. This time the sync failed. I relaunch iTunes and restart the iPhone in order to ensure a good sync, and try again. This time the sync works. Expected play count from that one play: 2. Result: 2.

In my particular situation with this issue, the kludge is to remember to restart the iPhone and relaunch iTunes before I sync.

By the way, this is screwing up your scrobbling as well, if you haven't noticed.

So, any news on the 8.1.1 release? I was hoping today but it's looking unlikely.

I'm sick of restoring my iPad/iTouch everytime I do a sync to keep the play counts down.

Here's a great little update (NOT).  Just plugged in my phone to charge on my mac, mind you I haven't played music on my phone for days, and scrobble picked up that I had nearly 15 songs with plays. all the plays ranging from 1 to 15. Kill myself i'm so annoyed.

I have recently discovered this problem happening in my iTunes library and decided to get a hold of 8.1.1 beta and have found it to have fixed the issue..

I probably know the answer to this but i will ask with high hopes anyway.

Did the 8.1.1 CORRECT the incorrect plays or did it just STOP the application of incorrect plays?

As in did it retroactively fix or just proactive?

How does one get hold of the 8.1.1 beta?

It did not fix the play counts that it already messed up.
