Q: How do I rescue Photos?

I downloaded iOS 8.0 to my iPad last night and initially was pretty impressed with some of the new features but then I learned that iPhoto is no longer supported. I have >6000 photos in iPhoto, many of which have been extensively edited and carefully annotated. I tried to migrate them to Photos but now whenever I try to open Photos it crashes almost immediately. I've tried turning the device off and on again (which made no difference) but beyond that I have no clue what to try next other than deleting both apps and starting again. Any thoughts?

Don't delete iPhoto before you migrated the photos, or the photos will be deleted.

For some users it helped to disable the My Photo Stream in the Settings/iCloud pane and then to restart the iPad.

If Photos still crashes, reset the iPad, see: Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
And if it still crashes after that, you need to reinstall "Photos", but that can only be done by reinstalling iOS 8.
Try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes. Make a backup.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
