Q: My ipad 2 ran great on with IOS 7. Now with IOS 8 it is slow and choppy and full of error messages. Is this Apples way of forcing my IPad2 into obsolesence?

IOS 8 degrades iPad2 performance.

Planned obsolescence was one of my first thoughts.  My iPad 2 was great until I "upgraded" to ios 8.  I tried all the "fixes" I could find on the net.  Then I took it to the Apple "Genius" bar.  They told me that my iPad can no longer be downgraded to ios 7.  Thanks Apple--no warning that my iPad would turn into a POS with no ability to return to ios 7.  Now I guess I will need to go buy something other than an Apple product.

I think you have to ask yourself a few things before you throw the toys out of the pram.

    1) How well do other tablets hold up in these respects after 3 years?

    2) Should we be resisting the latest version of iOS even if Apple do claim it can be installed on iPad 2 and stay with what works?

    3) Are there other annoyances or features you will lose if you move away from Apple?

I have written about some fixes here myself but I have learnt that perhaps next time I will not upgrade. In reality, for iPad 2 users iOS 8 wasn't going to bring a great many new features. Many of us will hope that there are some speed fixes by next year but I will be looking at buying the successor to iPad Air 2. I shall then apply updates far more cautiously.

Just to say that I have the same problem and it's more than just frustrating. I like Apple's products but Apple is undoubtedly a pain in the butt when it comes to both meeting key user requirements and/or solving Apple software bugs / problems. Seems to me Apple should have not made iOS 8 available for earlier iPad IPhone models if they can't meet the spec.

That said I finally found a solution that worked for me: -

    • Select Settings
    • Select General
    • Select Reset
    • Select Erase All Content and Settings

IOS 8.1 (assuming you have the latest set up should remain operational)

You can then start all over again i.e. iOS8 should take you through the start up routine and then you can use the App Store App to re-load purchased Apps.

If to you iCloud you should then be able to get contacts etc. sync as well.

I am no Apple specialist and I make no guarantees with respect to data, calendars etc. but I did do the reset with my iPad 2 and it now seems to be working fine. I took this approach after seeing various other comments about doing a complete reset that seemed to have worked for others too. It's all a bit of a pain but once you get around to doing it, it is not really that much of a hassle. At least for the apps I use, some of which sync with other devices it was fairly painless and the loss of frustration has been a bit boost!!

    Thanks for starting this thread.

Fortunately, it has led to a solution for me.  I removed photos to give more memory, as I'm guessing iOS8 needs to access storage memory for increased processing memory.

A network reset seems to have solved my problem of a dysfunctional Mail app and has stopped the general juddering.

Without this thread, I would not have figured this out.  (I was not prepared to pay Apple Support to fix a problem Apple  had caused.)

I do think Apple was negligent in encouraging iPad 2 owners to install an upgrade that could cause so may problems for so many people.  We used to trust Apple to treat us right. That trust has been shaken.

But, Apple does provide this forum for self-help.  Thanks to all who contributed.
