Hello there, Billyboy1469.
The following Knowledge Base article provides information iPhone acceptable operating temparatures:
Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures

When using the device or charging the battery, it is normal for it to get warm. The exterior of the device functions as a cooling surface that transfers heat from inside the device to the cooler air outside.
If you'd like to optimize your iOS device, this link proves to be a great resource to maximize battery life and usage:

Hi,
Sorry , I don't agree with your response.
I am using my phone at same temperature and location where I used before upgrade , how come it wasn't getting hot?
sometimes it's getting more hot now where I can't hold phone in hand and continue with call..
hope you ll get more complaints on this regard from others as well.
Thanks.
Did you try resetting your iPhone? That resolved both heating and battery problems for me after upgrading to IOS 8.
There's a few people with this problem, my own iPhone 5s began overheating this morning when using iBooks (but not any other app). I've posted in this thread:
iPhone 5S getting incredibly hot and high battery usage after iOS 8 update
I just updated to iOS8 and my phone is noticeably hot as well. Never had the problem before the update. I have done a hard reset (had to in order to "activate" iMessage).
It would be nice if more testing is done before issuing an update.
Same issue here ... hot phone ... nothing changed except the update.
