Q: After a while the bar at the bottom disappears and it crashes.

In Safe Boot, the bar at the bottom doesn't progress at all and after a while it dissapears and then the whole thing crashes. I use Mavericks on a 6 year-old MacBook Pro, I have 8 Gigabytes of RAM.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Are you able to boot normally?  Is it just Safe Boot that crashes?

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk and disk permissions.  Reboot and see if there's any improvement.

If that fails reboot again into the Recovery volume and reinstall the system.
