iOS 8: iPhone freezes when switching active app and has contact with several thousand numbers in list at top

When switching between active apps, the list of recent contacts is shown at the top.

if one of these contacts contain several thousand numbers, the phone freezes. No buttons respond. When it goes to sleep after a while, it can be unlocked as normal.

This effectively makes app switching unusable.

Granted, it's not normal to have a contact with several thousand numbers, but it's a contact generated by a "telephone terror" app - helping me avoid being buggered by known salesmen and others just wanting to waste your time.
