How do I convert from FCP 7 to FCP X?

I recently purchased FCP X with my new MacBook Pro. I have files that I had created in FCP 7 and would like to work on them in X. I was told I can convert them using something called 7 to X which is apparently an app of some sort. Problem is, I really can't figure out how to download it or purchase it in order to even try. I found it at its parent site (http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com) but when I downloaded I was told I needed a serial number but never found any place to acquire one. What does this cost? I had been told it was actually free but I'm guessing that's not true. Needless to say I'm pretty confused about it all. Can someone give me a sort of step by step to find where to take care of this—or if there's a better way to accomplish this?

7toX is not free. You purchase it through the App Store. It's an XML conversion utility. It converts the XML project file you export from fcp7 to an XML format that can be read and imported into FCPX.

Thank you. I could not find it in the App Store. I did a search for it, 7 to X, and nothing came up.

TRy searching for the name "7toX" without the spaces; they way it's written in their web site.

I must be doing something wrong, because that did not help. Am I supposed to access the App Store through my iTunes? That is what I've been doing. Or is it through the Apple website?

NNo. iTunes is for iOS apps. You want the Mac App Store. Your computer has an application called App Store. That sells applications for your computer that run on OS X.

Thank you! That was very helpful. I was able to find, purchase and download the app. The only problem is now I cannot find it on my computer. I do a search for it, 7toX, and nothing comes up. My App Store shows that it had downloaded, but where do I find it?

Actually, my woes continue. I tried to use the 7toX, but it will not accept my FCP file. It is greyed out and I can't choose it. It is a .fcp file; shouldn't I be able to convert that? Or is this a question for the makers of 7toX?

If you refer to 7toX help, you export a FCP 7 XML and open in the app.

By Apple? I think the official position is FCP7 on Mavericks is not supported by Apple.* So you are on your own if you choose to do so.

I'm running it along side Adobe CC on Mavericks, others in the thread I referenced above are running it along side FCP-X on Mavericks.

You need to do some trouble shooting, and the trouble shooting you need to do will be different if you have upgraded the OS of a computer that already had FCP-7 installed, versus installing Final Cut Studio on a new computer.

* Edit - actually, now that I think about it, FCP7 is no longer supported by Apple in any instance.
