Q: iPhone 6 Plus Screen Orientation Sticks

I have an iPhone 6 Plus, 64GB. I am having the followign issue:

My screen will either get stuck in landscape or upside down. Yes, I said upside down. There are times I will unlock the the phone and when the home screen comes up, everything is upside down, just like an iPad would be when you turn it around. Even when I spin the phone around, trying to get it to turn the screen, it won't rotate the icons. I hit the power button, and unlock it again, but it doesn't always fix it. Last time it was stuck, I had to power the phone off and back  on before it would work right again.

I have checked the orientation lock button, and it is not activate.

I have checked to see if my screen is regular or zoom and it is set to regular.

Anyone else seeing this? I wonder if it is a bug with hardware that controls orientation?

    I have the same problem

And it is also with both my new iPhone 6 plus and my iPad Air

The air started acting up after I upgraded to iOS 8

Doesn't happen all the time but, it does happen fairly frequently

Also I have not had the upside down issue.  It is mostly locking in landscape.

Seems pretty clear to me that it is not a hardware problem since it does it on both devices

Have had the iPad air for some time and it never did it prior to iOS 8

Got a text from a friend who got her iPhone 6 plus yesterday and she has the same issue

So, it's not an isolated issue

    Anybody have a solution?

I know this seems to be similar to the "you're holding it wrong" antenna dropped call fix, but what I've noticed is that I tend to put my phone in my pocket upside down so when I grab it from my pocket, the home key is automatically under my thumb.  I think this is where the software is hanging up because the accelerometer must think that the phone should now be oriented upside down and uses that as the basis for orientation.

I haven't tested this fix extensively, but I don't seem to have the upside down home screen locking issue when I put my phone in my pocket with the home button down.  Let me know what you guys find, but this seems to be the only short-term fix I've found...

This is unfortunate because I chose to go back to the iPhone due to OS stability issues with the S4.

This seems to have worked. Or I've just been lucky and not had the issue since disabling this. I recommend anyone having this issue to give it a try. Didn't think it would apply to me since I didn't have zoom enabled But this was a separate setting That must be enabled by default.

Same thing for me  iPhone 6plus 128.  Phone is slow with rotation, and gets stuck in landscape more often than portrait.  I am in standard mode.  When this occurs typically the home button will not allow reachability feature.  Sometimes opening an app will unlock screen  but more often I have to power down.   Just tried 2 recommendations by other members on forum including calibrating compass and turning off follow focus in accessibility.  Will see if this works.  Apple??......

Same issue here too. On 6 Plus 64 Space Grey. Also I cannot take or choose pics from within the messaging app. When I press the camera icon whilst in the message app, the options (choose photo, take pic) show up, but when I touch one of them, the screen just goes blank and takes me back to my home screen. It's been doing this since I got the phone on launch day at 8:00 am. I am getting SUPER frustrated with this.

I tried what you suggested, took zoom off and the rotation worked perfectly. Thank you!

Mine has done the same thing. I brought it back to the apple store yesterday and they replaced it... now its doing it again!!! I believe it has to be a software issue.

I Had same issue... I calibrated the gyroscope and all is well with the world again... Go to compass and perform the calibration within the app when it starts up... It has worked for me so far... Hope this helps

I'm having the same stuck upside down home screen problem. I tried calibrating the Compass and every one of the zoom tricks and none of them worked. If I lock the orientation in a different app it will stay that way on the home screen. I don't think this is a long term fix. Restarting the phone works for a short time. The problem seems to happen after I stick my phone (6+) in my pocket upside down.
