Q: Occasionally iPhone 6 won't rotate

Hi Everyone,

Every once in a while, my iPhone 6 refuses to rotate the screen. Usually it's after capturing or viewing a slomo movie, though I haven't been able to reproduce it.

Symptoms: the iPhone refuses to rotate the display in Photos/Safari/etc; it's stuck in one orientation or another.

Toggling orientation lock makes no difference. The only thing that fixes it is a restart.

Has anyone else seen this?

iPhone 6, iOS 8, 64gb, verizon.

Adding my voice. I go out, take pictures, and then nearly always need to rotate them manually after the fact. The phone doesn't know which way is up.

I have the same problem, screen will not rotate  pictures taken. I did a hard reset and it started to work again but the pictures that I took are not in the correct position. It seems like the gyroscope gets stuck in one position and the phone does not recognize how it is positioned.

    Same problem here !

Curiously I did a backup yesterday in my Pc and after that haven't had the issue again (so far...).

I hope this is a software issue, otherwise I would go back to my Iphone 5 or Android

    Good luck!

I have an iPhone 6, software 8.0.2 updated and I'm having the same issue: screen won't rotate to landscape in messages or safari. Obviously 8.0.2 didn't fix the issue entirely. I powered all the way off and back on and it seems to be working again but I expect this issue to return because I've powered it off and on before and still encountered the issue later. Hopefully someone at Apple is reading these threads.

Same issue. 6 Plus on AT&T with 128GB and IOS 8.0.0.....

One other distinction is that I have my display set to Zoomed instead of Standard for the icon and text sizes.

Sometimes when I switch between mail and watching a video I can get it to free up.

I've also never been able to get the home screen and mail to do the new rotation that was advertised. But that's a different thread.

I can confirm I have the same problem with my iPhone 6 plus. At times, the screen will get stuck in portrait orientation and won't rotate to landscape. None of the apps, even the built in ones, rotate as well. Every time this happens, I have to completely restart the phone to get the rotation working again. So much for Apple's "It just works claim".

I am experiencing the same issues, on iPhone 6 with iOS 8.0.2. It appears to be triggered by incoming notifications. For example, if I am writing an email in portrait orientation but receive a Messages notification, the mail app will rotate to landscape and stay that way no matter how I rotate my device. Just closing the mail app doesn't fix it either - it comes straight back up in landscape mode and won't budge. The only way I've found to fix it is to close the mail app, and give it some time / do something else on the device, and THEN reopen the mail app.

I have experienced the same issue in the contacts app, messages app, calendar app and mail app - always triggered by an incoming notification.

At first I thought maybe the vibration caused by the notification was affecting the gyro and causing the app to rotate, but then when it didn't rotate back again I realised it must be a software bug.

ANY response from Apple on this at all yet...? Apple?

    Hi guys

I phone six plus issue since ios 8 update what an issue, cant get bluetooth on car at all been on the phone to apple for two episodes 2 hours each time without success and promises of engineers report, have heard nothing.  I am paying a considerable amount per month for this phone but cannot use this device in my car as apple as mucked up the software compatibility on two phone in one foul swoop, sooooooon angry and upset, Apple show respect to all you customers and get this update rectified and stop telling people to contact their dealership.  This is a ios 802 problem please SORT THIS OUT IMMEDIATELY as I can see many people will return their defeated hand sets back and Appple will most certainly lose their good reputtion overnight too many blips now.  I updated two phone to ios 8.0.2 now neither works in my car both worked on the 8 ios what a bloody nightmare and frustrating cant believe apple are risking their good name with this and insulting all their customers.

I have an iPhone 5s and it's doing the same thing as what's been mentioned.  Extremely frustrating to wake up the phone and fire up messages or some other app only to have the screen rotate as soon as a notification comes in.  Also had a flipped photo last night which I hadn't seen yet.  For the record, I'm running 8.0.2.  Hope they can get a workaround and fix put together soon.

My IPhone 6 plus has the same issue. It can not turn to landscape mode in standard view occasionally. This is so annoying, even when I'm texting. Did anyone know how to fix it?

    iPhone 6 running 8.0.2....SAME problem here !

Screen does not auto-rotate everytime.  Can't precisely duplicate it (so can't pinpoint a reason), but it happens almost all the time...sometimes locking and unlocking fixes it; other times, the 'vibrate' side button fixes it, but the fixes don't work everytime, even with the same app...

** Very similar issue ALSO happens with the CAMERA -- the menus do NOT autorotate with the camera from portrait to landscape, and back.  Pictures are taken in the wrong orientation.

Let's hope a fix comes soon...it's tough to use the phone like this.

Note: Problem is NOT occurring on my older iPhone 4S running 8.0.2.
