iMac 20" core 2 Duo (Shutdown while using iPhoto)

Hi All,

I'm fairly new to Mac's so please bare with me.

I've had my new Mac for 3 days now but have run into a problem when using iPhoto. Particularily when trying to use the enhance feature.

It does not happen everytime but the screen scrolls darker from top to bottom and the Mac freezes. It shows a message (I'm paraphrasing here) that says the computer needs to be restarted by pressing the power button or holding it down.

When I reboot it shows me the panic logs (I can't post them right now as I'm at work), and asks me to send it too Apple.

Any ideas. Should I re-install 0SX? Should I see a Mac Gemius for a return? Thanks.

no, i wouldn't return a computer just for a kernel panic (the restart message you are getting). first of all, have you mostly been using just iphoto, or are you using any number of applications?? if you have mostly been using iphoto, then it is hard to say if this is iphoto related, or another problem. try running the computer without any devices attached to it for starters, and remove any added ram you have in the computer. another thing to do would be to boot to the install disk and run disk repair. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 [ 8 ) ]

A disk repair from the Install disk, as suggested, is one troubleshooting technique. Another is to use Disk Utility in Apps/Utilities to Repair Permissions. Finally trashing iPhoto and reinstalling from the Install DVD is a third.
Mac OS X is burned on the HD of a new Mac quite quickly. What some folks prefer with a new Mac, fresh out of the box, is to take some time and do an erase and install from the Install DVDs. Then run Software Update and get all of the latest versions of all Apple software. Finally, with OS X and all Apple apps up-to-date, transfer and install user accounts and personal files or for folks new to Macs creation of a User Account. This process is not only useful for a computer update from, for example, a G3 to a G5, but even more so from something as big as PPC to Intel. I did it in JAN from my iMac G3 to my iMac Core Duo. Haven't had any issues personally, but have assisted many who have.
One mistake many new users make is to make their root account their user account. I reserve the root account as the administrator account and have a separate User Account for myself, which also has administrator capabilities. If I make mistakes in administering my Mac it is in my user account, which I can delete and re-establish as needed.
