Give different names to the 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands.. this is more important than channels.
Selecting 5ghz when you are close to the TC should give you higher speeds.. but.. it is doubtful wireless will give you your full bandwidth no matter what you do.. it is still a shared media and therefore all the other devices on wireless time slice with whatever your computer is doing.
So open airport utility and go to the wireless tab.

All names should be short, no space and pure alphanumeric.. so as per my example.. TC24ghz for the 2.4ghz band.
Then click on wireless options on the bottom of that page.

In wireless options you can .. set a 5ghz wireless name.. TC5ghz for example.
You set the wireless channels.. but note in the new AC model.. you cannot easily move the 149 channel in 5ghz that is used to something else.. and the radio mode no longer works.. so as time goes along apple is trying hard to make the Airport router featureless.
Do not worry about channels.. in my opinion auto is fine for 5ghz.. and for 2.4ghz you can test 11, 6, 1 and perhaps 9 if you have heaps of wireless signal around you.. but apple have restricted 2.4ghz speed anyway so you will never achieve speeds greater than about 60Mbps real world transfer.
