Q: No incoming message sound when locked - iPhone 6, iOS 8

Hi All...

I've been trying to find an answer to this question, but have yet to resolve it.  I have a new iPhone 6 plus.  When a new message is received, the screen wakes up and displays the message info, but there is no associated sound.  I have a sound set for messages in settings, but it doesn't matter what I choose, it still does not make a sound when an iMessage or text message comes in.  The sounds do work when the phone is unlocked.  I do not have Do Not Disturb turned on, the volume switch is turned on and the volume is at the top value.

Is this an iOS 8 bug?  I've rebooted several times and I've done a soft reset.

Please help!

Ok just hung up with Apple support, in a nutshell it is "by design" that only one device rings...

if iPhone is locked (black screen), Apple Watch will ring

if iPhone is unlocked, both devices will ring

if you're not wearing the Watch, Phone will ring

if you turn off Bluetooth, your iPhone will ring and your Watch will... wait you need Bluetooth...

if you don't have an Apple Watch or you're not wearing it you shouldn't have any problem...

Tek guy said LOTS of people are complaining about this so maybe on iOS 9.1.0.0.0.0.0.1 we'll get it!

I am having this issue too and it's really a problem.  Does Apple Support ever respond to these threads?  This is a major bug.  I have an iPhone 6 Plus as well and started having this issue when I activated a scheduled Do Not Disturb.  I noticed at the bottom of the Do Not Disturb screen there is a setting related to sounds:  "Silence:  Always [or] Only while iPhone is locked."  There are no other options (you must check one or the other), so clearly the silence feature is only supposed to be active when Do Not Disturb is in effect (scheduled or manual), but it seems to be active all the time instead.  I toggled Do Not Disturb off and on.  Restarted my phone.  And tried a host of other combos to see if anything would work.  Still do not get message alerts when my phone is locked.  I will probably just unlock it for now, but that is a major security risk.  Apple needs to resolve this issue.  Going to make an appointment at the Genius Bar.  Will report back.  So frustrated.

Thank you!  Yes, I have an Apple Watch, so perhaps this is the issue. The sad thing was that I had my Apple Watch silenced do I wasn't getting the message-alerts period.

Unfortunately my issue is not due to the watch which I don't have or to using the Do Not Disturb - have checked that is off both globally but also for the individual.  Any other ideas?

I had this problem also. I read on another forum that they turned off the bluetooth and their sound worked. I tried that and it worked for me too. Good luck!

HEY EVERYONE, I had this same issue and realized what the issue was. Turn off your Bluetooth function! Once I did that mines worked.

So are you saying that having bluetooth turned on shuts off all sounds and alerts while the screen is off?

I Discovered that if you have a Bluetooth tv or stereo on snd you have connected your phone to it.  The phone will automatically connect to the tv or stereo thru the air play Bluetooth function.  If the tv or stereo is turned on. Turn off the tv or stereo and the phone will revert back to normal and all alert sounds will come back on. Or you can manually disconnect by going to the quick pullup menu and turn off air play which will disconnect the phone from those devices. It's a hard to find solution but that's what worked for me.

open a text message that comes in with no sound.

Press Details and check there if "Do not disturb" is on.

    Just turn it off
