Q: No incoming message sound when locked - iPhone 6, iOS 8

Hi All...

I've been trying to find an answer to this question, but have yet to resolve it.  I have a new iPhone 6 plus.  When a new message is received, the screen wakes up and displays the message info, but there is no associated sound.  I have a sound set for messages in settings, but it doesn't matter what I choose, it still does not make a sound when an iMessage or text message comes in.  The sounds do work when the phone is unlocked.  I do not have Do Not Disturb turned on, the volume switch is turned on and the volume is at the top value.

Is this an iOS 8 bug?  I've rebooted several times and I've done a soft reset.

Please help!

    Go to settings.

    Sounds.

    Lock Sounds.

    Turn it off.

Will all due respect, that's not what we're talking about. You're talking about enabling the sound which is heard when locking the phone. We're talking about message notifications not sounding when the phone is locked.

This is a major, major problem that a device like IPHONE 6 should not be causing! I have serious, time sensitive texts with reports where we compete

with others to accept the jobs and the texts are crucial. Yesterday, I probably lost $1,000 no knowing the messages came in despite all the settings being 100% correct. The minute they come in I have 30-60 seconds to accept before someone else takes it. They need to fix this message alert being silent issue permenantly like now or I have to switch phones as those message alerts worked perfectly on my old IPHONE for last 2 years and are crucial to my income & business. Who expected this from the newest technology? I hope someone or Apple can please deal with this now as it is a message driven world and this cannot just be ignored-its obviously thousands of people dealing with this issues.Anyone who has any updated info it would be great if they post.

sorry I misunderstood. Here's how to fix:

    Settings

    General

    Reset

    Reset All Settings

You will have to reenter all the password, fingerprint, pass code, etc. So it is time consuming, but it works.

Not sure I want to try that. This problem has persisted for me for over 3 years of iPhone use. In that time I've done full factory resets on a number of occasions. And now that I have a brand new 6 Plus, the problem happened from the get go. If it happens on a FRESH phone (i.e. all settings reset) then I don't see how clicking "Reset All Settings" is going to fix the problem permanently. This is a bug and Apple need to fix it.

Thanks a lot!!! I've been trying to fix it for ages and it was just about to make an appointment with Apple store, as I thought there is a problem with my phone! You saved me a lot time! Disabling the manual option on "do not disturb" instantly help! Thank you once again!

Thank you, Hamlink4!  This "no text tone" issue had been driving me crazy, and your suggestion worked for me, too.  Made my day!

SO underneath do not disturb it says if it's on manual than you will not be alerted when phone is locked. Switch it to off. I have no idea where my screen shot posted but that fixes it:)

3 STEPS TO HOPEFULLY RECOVER SOUND ON YOUR IPHONE FOR INCOMING TEXTS/CALLS/ALERTS.

    1. Check that the ringer on the left of the phone doesn’t show an orange line – indicating sound switched off. If so, slide it to the right so only white is showing. This may have fixed it.
    2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal symbols, music etc. Ensure that the half moon symbol is grey and not white. If it’s white touch it to make it grey – this will switch off do not disturb. This may have fixed it.
    3. Check your settings, Do not Disturb half moon icon, ensure that Manual is off and not showing a green on icon. If it is, touch the green icon which will make it white and switch it off. This may have fixed it.

(I hope that helps, it worked for my iphone 5C as I’d inadvertently switched on Do Not disturb as shown in step 2. above.)

I just got a new iPhone 6 and set it up. The settings above (jenhebert  & cldm000)  are exactly the same. Yet I still do not get a sound or alert when the phone is asleep/locked.  Looking at the settings in the graphics - SILENCE: Only When iPhone is locked, is checked. You cannot deselect this, with out selecting Always.

This must be a feature (admittedly a poor feature).

I did the Settings>Reset per the Tech support request.  (after verifying all the settings were "correct")

And after the reset, the iPhone would "ring" when asleep.

However, after enabling Passcode / Touch ID feature, no "ring" while locked

I can enable/disable the  Passcode / Touch ID at will and it will (not) ring / ring.

That seems to be the issue.

OK - after trying a few more things I found that even with the Passcode / Touch ID enabled, I can get the iPhone to alert while locked, only if the Allow Notifications is set to Everyone. Not Favorites, even if the #s calling are in my Favorites.

    Pretty strange set of settings.

    Passcode /Touch ID enabled :

Will alert if Notifications>Allow Calls is set to Everyone; Will not Alert if set to Favorites( even if receiving call from a Favorite)

    Passcode /Touch ID disabled:

Will alert if Notifications>Allow Calls is set to Everyone or Favorites (if receiving call from a Favorite)

I went under notifications and disabled notifications for messages. I turned off my phone and turned it back on, then turned notifications back on for messages and it fixed the problem.
