Q: No incoming message sound when locked - iPhone 6, iOS 8

Hi All...

I've been trying to find an answer to this question, but have yet to resolve it.  I have a new iPhone 6 plus.  When a new message is received, the screen wakes up and displays the message info, but there is no associated sound.  I have a sound set for messages in settings, but it doesn't matter what I choose, it still does not make a sound when an iMessage or text message comes in.  The sounds do work when the phone is unlocked.  I do not have Do Not Disturb turned on, the volume switch is turned on and the volume is at the top value.

Is this an iOS 8 bug?  I've rebooted several times and I've done a soft reset.

Please help!

Here is the solution - weird, but still the solution:

What fixed the problem for me was my alert sounds relied on volume instead of ringer tone volume. Go to any video app, IE YouTube, and turn the volume up all the way. This controls the volume for alerts when the phone is locked. Again weird, but still the solution once the Do not disturb feature and mute button are examined.

After trying a ton of things that I've seen posted for a fix, your solution appears to have worked for me. Thanks xeonic84!

    To reiterate the fix:

    • Notifications

    • Disable notifications for messages

    • Power phone off. Power it back on.

    • Return to notifications and turn it back on for messages.

As far as Apple and their "personal response within 48 hours" email, it's now day 4 and that hasn't happened yet.

I had the same problem in the 3rd year of using my iPhone 4s (no sound alert when receiving text messages, well I shouldn't say "no" sound, sometimes it will alert me and sometimes it won't).  It was extremely frustrating and I was so excited to not have this issue when I got my brand new iPhone 6...unfortunately I am still having the same issue!!!  I couldn't believe it!  I am the biggest Apple fan around, ask anyone who knows me.  I have owned and loved their products for years but lately it seems things have gone down hill.
I have fiddled with settings and turning things off and on but it still seems to be the same thing, sometimes I get an alert, other times I don't

    .

Has anybody gotten a response from Apple?  I don't live near an Apple store but I may venture to one on my next long weekend if need be.  This is a very disappointing bug after spending so much on a new phone

As stated in the previous post, it had been 4 days. Now it's a week with no reply. I was not going to pay $29 for a phone call to Apple that may or may not have resolved the issue. My Verizon agreement expires in early April. Normally I would automatically get a new iPhone, but I may rethink this when the time comes. I would expect Apple to at least attempt to resolve the issue with the price of these devices, but that hasn't been the case. I'm glad that these forums exist so that we may give each other help when we can.

Like you, I've owned Apple products since the 90's starting with a Performa 6400/OS 7. Love the products but sometimes the support is not that loveable.

If your iPhone is new enough or if you have a protection plan, maybe you can get an answer with paying up. Fortunately, the fix suggested by xeonic84 appears to be holding for me.

As stated by pm shop above.........

    This worked for me also......

ALERT SOUNDS RELIED ON VOLUME INSTEAD OF RINGER TONE VOLUME. GO TO ANY VIDEO APP, IE YOUTUBE, AND TURN THE VOLUME UP ALL THE WAY

    Thanks pm shop!!!!!!!!!

I've been messing with this issue for months - Yes sometimes the soft reset worked but maybe thats because it set the volume on our apps back up and after we turned them down again problem not solved.  I hope this works for EVERYBODY.....

I have the opposite problem.  When a text message comes in the notification volume can wake the dead.  My ringer volume on the side buttons is set to 1/3 at best, yet when a text message comes in, watch out.  Through some research and forums like this, I have found that if I go to the music app and look at the volume there, it was set to full.  As soon as I adjusted it to a lower volume, my text message notification dropped as well.

Weird, but it seems the notification volume is tied to the volume set in apps like music.

Same thing happened to me today. No sound on alerts, but all my other volume worked perfect. I had the Ringer/mute button off. I toggled it back on and magic I'm back to alerts from text, email, groupies on facebook, Twitter replies on how sexy my chicken shake n' bake came out and where my girlfriend is when I track her on my finder app!! I need to stop smoking so much weed!!

Here's something I found on my iphone 6 that may help someone that isn't receiving text message alerts..

My phone had selected a bluetooth airplay device so the sound was going there instead of to my phone. I swiped up, set airplay to my iPhone and the text sounds are back.
