Q: No incoming message sound when locked - iPhone 6, iOS 8

Hi All...

I've been trying to find an answer to this question, but have yet to resolve it.  I have a new iPhone 6 plus.  When a new message is received, the screen wakes up and displays the message info, but there is no associated sound.  I have a sound set for messages in settings, but it doesn't matter what I choose, it still does not make a sound when an iMessage or text message comes in.  The sounds do work when the phone is unlocked.  I do not have Do Not Disturb turned on, the volume switch is turned on and the volume is at the top value.

Is this an iOS 8 bug?  I've rebooted several times and I've done a soft reset.

Please help!

This is primarily a user-to-user forum. If you want to report the problem to Apple, do it via http://www.apple.com/feedback/.

It may just be me that's been an idiot, but I was looking through the forums on how to fix this and hadn't had any success; what fixed it for me was so simple I deserve to be banned from owning a phone for a month or two...the toggle switch above the volume buttons had flicked to "Ringer silent" mode without me noticing. I now have all my alerts back as they were.

SOLUTION: I've had the same issues...You have to disable the "Manual" setting under Settings>Do Not Disturb...It clearly says "When "Do Not Disturb" is enabled calls and alerts that arrive while locked will be silenced, and a moon icon will appear in the status bar."  Works for me.

Thank you! Your solution was the only one that worked.

You'd think that Apple could have figured this out, but no, their instructions tell you to connect your phone to computer, go to iTunes, restore your ringtones. blah blah blah.

Thank you so much!  I didn't even know about that slides with above the volume switch.  That was my problem - I switched it off and now my ringtones, etc are working again. you saved me from having to do a hard reset.

This solution is the real deal!  The Do Not Disturb in Settings is an overall DND.  However, you can set DND for individual people as well. In my case, the global DND was set to off, but my wife's messages were set to DND on.

Again, the procedure is to go to a text message from someone whose messages don't ding or vibrate.  At the top right of that person's message is DETAILS.  Press Details and see if Do Not Disturb is on or off.  Set it to off.

I had this problem and tried all the suggestions, went through all the settings, changed sounds -- multiple times, all to no avail.

By accident I was looking at the message and noticed there was that moon symbol associated with the "Do Not Disturb" option, but it was definitely turned off in settings. I'm not referring to the moon symbol you would see at the top display bar with battery status, time, signal strength, etc., but rather a moon icon next to the senders' name on the main "Messages" display.  So, it was turned on for that contact!! View the message, tap "Details" in the upper right corner. There it is, another "Do Not Disturb" switch . I turned it off, (I must have accidentally turned it on at some point), now everything works.

It may have been mentioned here, but I never realized there were individual "Do Not Disturb" switches for each Message sender.

Hopefully this will help someone else with the problem.

Just found a solution which worked on my 6+...... Recently I connected a Bt to my phone and prior to I was receiving text sounds... Afterwards I was having the vibrating issues everyone else was having... Eventually I noticed that when the Bt was connected I did not receive text sounds... Once disconnected from Bluetooth sound returned!!!!  Hopefully this helps anyone who has a Bt connected or atleaste make you aware...

    First, it's not a bug.

Do you have ANY "Do Not Disturb" functions turned on?  If so, that will silence ALL txt alerts.

    Thanks - this works

My problem was that all other sounds EXCEPT message notifications worked and your solution sorted it.

    Thanks again!

Must be just a glitch they can sort with next update. Mine didn't work after using the Jack socket to connect to my car stereo & Bluetooth for hands free phone. Text sounds & music stopped playing through phone speakers. Quick reboot & it worked again

I have a similar problem; I get the sound but it is so soft I can hardly hear it when the phone is next to me.  Across the room, no.  The phone ringtone is ok.  Rebooting helps, but it doesn't last.

Similar problem as articulated in this thread.  Went to my settings, notifications and activated alert sounds for each item; ie: messages, incoming emails, etc.  All good now.

    Go to settings.

    Sounds.

    Lock Sounds.

    Turn it off.

This worked for me with iPhone 5
