not only is the iPhone 6 unlocked, but the t-mobile phones work on verizon!

if someone makes a youtube video or writes a news story about my post, this time around i really would appreciate some credit. saying rigor mortis from apple discussions' is good enough.

it turns out that the iPhone 6 and 6 plus model numbers #1459 and #1522 are universal. and both have the CDMA radio enabled. However, Sprint models are still separate as far as i know. i did not test Sprint. but as far as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, go , it is the EXACT same phone. i was playing around with my iPhone 6 on launch day. i wanted to see if "ask maggie" was right and the phone was locked to a specific carrier. i tried the T-Mobile and AT&T sims that i had. they do not have service.

however when i inserted my LIVE and ACTIVATED Verizon Sim into my iPhone 6 , my iPhone suddenly became a verizon iPhone. i was able to Place and Receive calls using CDMA, i was able to use DATA services, and i was able to send SMS messages. i assumed that VoLTE was not enabled. and it was not. i assumed

that you had to buy a Verizon model to get Volte. but i was wrong. it just took a while to activate. and i did see use VoLTE in settings, for Voice and DATA

however, since the IMEI and MEID serial numbers are not listed with Verizon, you are not able to either Sign up to verizon, or to transfer service to your new iPhone 6. your service is still tied to your SIM card. and when the iPhone 6 is running and active with your sim card, your device listed on "MY Verizon" will be shown as NON VZW device and it will only show the sim card. but a pre-activated sim card pulling from another device will work in the iPhone 6.

this is just like the iPad Air and the iPad Mini Retina. the only difference between these phones is the serial number is put in some list that tells someone which

carrier it supposed to belong to, and if it is locked or not. and which sim card came with the device. other then that. there are no technical differences between them. except for sprint of course.

whenever i inserted a new sim card into the iPhone 6, it automatically got carrier settings and changed its baseband.

Can you cite a source for that information? I'm not trying to be difficult or argumentative, I'm just skeptical because I have worked extensively with iPhones for the last 2 years, and have never known this to be the case, much less a law.

I'm sure I could hunt down the FCC regulation if I felt inclined to take the time to do so just to satisfy your curiosity, but it's far easier to look a Verizon's own stated policy: http://www.verizonwireless.com/aboutus/commitment/safety-security/device-unlocki ng-policy.html

  • We do not lock our 4G LTE devices, and no code is needed to program them for use with another carrier.
  • We do not lock our 4G LTE Prepaid devices, and no code is needed to program them for use with another carrier.

That's more than sufficient. Wasn't looking for FCC regulations, just a reliable source. Thanks for taking the time to do that...I'm always learning something new about cell phones every day!

Whatever. You can believe what you want.

If you bought an LTE capable device from Verizon and you believe it's carrier locked, then complain to the FCC if you can't get Verizon to resolve the problem.

Given the information that you provided KiltedTim, the problem that he is having has nothing to do with being carrier locked. The problem is that he purchased a subsidized phone that must be activated on the line that he upgraded. Once he does that, it will be in contract for 2 years even if it is GSM unlocked. He's trying to get around something that is impossible to get around...he wants a phone at a subsidized price without having to pay back that subsidy (and then some) through his monthly bill.

Hopefully their response will force Verizon to unlock my iPhone 12S Plus in 2021. We always have the government as an option.

Nothing about what has happened to you is Verizon's fault. While I agree with anyone that says that the way the cell carriers in this country do business is nothing short of "screwed up", you have no reason to be upset with Verizon. You purchased a phone at a heavily subsidized price. You can't expect Verizon to not want to get that subsidy back.

Not blaming Verizon. They're in business to make money and that's America. I just thought I could activate an unlocked iPhone 6 Plus purchased from Apple (albeit at the subsidized price) with any carrier (while still paying Verizon for the service every month). That's obviously not the case. No big deal to return the phone and get my $550. back. Love my 6, thought I might like the 6 Plus better. In the context of problems to have, this doesn't put a blip on the radar. Appreciate the input from everyone.

Thank you for the information.

Do you have any idea when apple will release the Iphone 6 Sim Free?

As is typical of Apple, they won't give any advance notice of when that will happen. It may even happen pretty quietly. My guess iserer that it won't happen until supply levels are able to meet demand. Regardless, buying a full price AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile iPhone 6 from the Apple Store will get you the same thing as the "Factory Unlocked" version will that Apple will eventually sell. That hasn't always been the case with pervious iPhones, but it seems that with the iPhone 6 and 6+, the only model that is different is the Sprint model.

Hi Ian,

So your saying that if i walk into an apple store and ask for an iphone6 at full price for Verizon it would be unlocked?. I am just a bit confused cuz every store around the area that i call are telling me otherwise. They are all saying that the only factory unlocked phone at full price is the t-mobile one.

Yes. If you do this, ask to buy a Verizon iPhone 6 (specify storage size and color) "device only, no plan, no activation". Mention full price if you like, but I'm sure it will come up otherwise.

What the stores are telling you is true for online orders.

What I am saying was true five weeks ago. I did what you are asking about then. Conceivably it has changed in the interim.

I have the same situation.

When I went to the apple store retail they told me you can get an ATT because att phone use same bandwidth as Tmobile and GSM mode and buy it with full price and you can use it even outside the US ''but we cannot guarantee that''.

And If you call the apple support they will definitely told you no it will not work that way and the only way is to get the T-mobile full price phone.

ATT, Verizon, and T Mobile all use the same model phones. Model A1549 for Iphone6 and A1522 for Iphone6+. As long as you pay full price for it at the Apple Store, and get one of those models you should be fine. The purpose of locking is to make you pay off a phone before switching networks. If you pay full price then that is irrelevant. Just make sure you don't get a Sprint model. It is a different model number. (see the link below) If you are going to get service from ATT, Verizon, or T-Mobile then it might be easier to set it up if you get the appropriate phone, because it will already show up in their database. However, you can save a lot of money if you get a SIM card from one of the prepaid operators. My average phone bill on my Iphone 6 is running less than $9 per month on a H2O prepaid plan. I used to pay around $100 a month for the same service from ATT. The Iphone 6 will pay for itself quickly if you do something like that. BTW, my Iphone 6 came from the Apple Store and had a Verizon card in it, which I removed and inserted my prepaid one from H2O. Then I had to connect to the internet network in my house and called H2O with the IMEA number. They transferred my old number to the new phone and sent a configuration file via the internet that got the data side working. The entire amount of time to do all this was less than 15 minutes.
