not only is the iPhone 6 unlocked, but the t-mobile phones work on verizon!

if someone makes a youtube video or writes a news story about my post, this time around i really would appreciate some credit. saying rigor mortis from apple discussions' is good enough.

it turns out that the iPhone 6 and 6 plus model numbers #1459 and #1522 are universal. and both have the CDMA radio enabled. However, Sprint models are still separate as far as i know. i did not test Sprint. but as far as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, go , it is the EXACT same phone. i was playing around with my iPhone 6 on launch day. i wanted to see if "ask maggie" was right and the phone was locked to a specific carrier. i tried the T-Mobile and AT&T sims that i had. they do not have service.

however when i inserted my LIVE and ACTIVATED Verizon Sim into my iPhone 6 , my iPhone suddenly became a verizon iPhone. i was able to Place and Receive calls using CDMA, i was able to use DATA services, and i was able to send SMS messages. i assumed that VoLTE was not enabled. and it was not. i assumed

that you had to buy a Verizon model to get Volte. but i was wrong. it just took a while to activate. and i did see use VoLTE in settings, for Voice and DATA

however, since the IMEI and MEID serial numbers are not listed with Verizon, you are not able to either Sign up to verizon, or to transfer service to your new iPhone 6. your service is still tied to your SIM card. and when the iPhone 6 is running and active with your sim card, your device listed on "MY Verizon" will be shown as NON VZW device and it will only show the sim card. but a pre-activated sim card pulling from another device will work in the iPhone 6.

this is just like the iPad Air and the iPad Mini Retina. the only difference between these phones is the serial number is put in some list that tells someone which

carrier it supposed to belong to, and if it is locked or not. and which sim card came with the device. other then that. there are no technical differences between them. except for sprint of course.

whenever i inserted a new sim card into the iPhone 6, it automatically got carrier settings and changed its baseband.

Verizon does not recommend using a non-Verizon phone, and will not provide support for it. If it works, good. If it doesn't there isn't much you can do to make it work. The best hope in getting it to work is to use a Verizon SIM that was previously activated in a different phone. But Verizon will not be able to add or change services, because the phone's IMEI/MEID is not in their database. So, for example, you cannot add an international roaming plan. And it will not work in non-Verizon partner areas that do not support LTE, or in the remaining areas of Verizon where they have not upgraded to LTE. There have been mixed reports about how well Visual Voicemail works.

so here is some update, actually i finally got my phone working, actually since apple said on the website that an unlocked phone should work on verizon and any other carrier, you must complain that your phone is not working than you ask them to get a phone with that network ( multi carrier unlock policy insteal of global ingram unlock policy )

it will than work just like with any phone from verizon 😉

keep me posted if it worked for you

I'm not TechHead - so most of the acronyms in this thread don't mean much to me. But, I'm hoping there are some astute souls out there can give me some answers. When I go to the Verizon store they give me answers, but I won't say where they're pulling them out of.

So, I'm heading to Latin America and want to be able to use my Verizon iPhone 6. What do I need to do? Here's my take; tell me where I'm right/wrong.

Thanks,

Since my contract is up I should be able to get Verizon to unlock it for free (correct?)

I'll keep my Verizon contract active (family plan) but I should be able to pull out my SIM card and replace it from one that I buy in whatever country I'm in.

Install the SIM card and I should have local voice and data service.

In an emergency I should still be able to put the Verizon SIM card back in and use their (expensive) international service.

I'd appreciate a chime in with someone who knows for sure how this works. Not speculation presented as knowledge like I get from the kids at Verizon.

Thanks

All Verizon iPhones from the 5 up (5, 5C, 5S, 6, 6+) are unlocked already for GSM and LTE networks (which is over 90% of the world's networks). Verizon doesn't have to unlock it; the phone is already unlocked. You can verify this by borrowing an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM from a friend and trying it in your iPhone. It will NOT be unlocked for CDMA networks, but they are a dying breed.

Your Verizon phone is already unlocked. All Verizon iPhones are sold unlocked. Yes, you can take your SIM out and install the SIM from a carrier in the country you're visiting. You will have whatever service you've paid the local carrier for. It will be a different phone number. Yes, in an emergency, you can put the Verizon SIM back and use the international roaming, as long as you've already called Verizon and arranged for it to be enabled. Call the Global Support department to make those arrangements. 800-711-8300.

This is highly misleading, and also so is information regarding T-Mobile versions of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

The phones are NOT UNLOCKED.

Before I start I will say that the information that Verizon will not stsart you a new service using an iPhone 6 from T-Mobile is no longer correct. I just got my service started today with my phone and the guy did it. He forced it through though. HOWEVER, HE DID SAY THAT IN TWO WEEKS THEY WILL BE ALLOWING PEOPLE TO BRING UNLOCKED IPHONES FROM OTHER CARRIERS.

The bad thing, of course is, the Apple rep who said T-Mobile iPhone 6/6P are factory unlocked, and the T-Mobile rep who sold me the phone was lying when they said it was unlocked.

because when I got my Verizon sim cativated it said the phone is locked, and now I have NO WORKING PHONE because of this.

Honestly I think it's not enough to make it the law that companies must unlock phones. I have requested unlocks from AT&T and said wait for the email. Oh trust me it takes 30 minutes to a day. Same with T-mobile earlier today I receive NOTHING. However, when I request chat transcript from T-Mobile I receive it ASAP. The woman on the phone didn't even ask my IEMI and that's required info. I think she LIED.

It should be ILLEGAL to lock phones in the first place. They do this to hook you in.

My advice honestly - **** phone locks or unlocks or locks or keys oir unlock codes. Pick a provider and just stick with them for life. This is the most ridiculous **** ever. "It will take 3 days to unlock the phone" .. Excuse me? What planet do you live on where someone can be without a phone for 3 days?? LOL ... Tell your boss your going radio silent for 3 days and he can't call you see what happens LOL. They act as if they are dumb. Why would I need my phone? **** I can go a week without one. no problem.

They do it so it is as hard as possible to switch carriers and the current law does nothing to help because theyre like "well we processed the request. you didn't get the email?" and it's all they say. After that it's "Well I'm sorry ..." -> "my hands are tied" "there's nothing i can do" "you have to wait" "i can't do anything" .. or they will say go to a retail store..

Verizon is going to lend me a phone. That to me is awesome, considering it isn't even them who caused this and I would love to curse T-Mobile but EVERY CARRIER DOES THIS. and that's the other thing they say "this is standard practice among carriers" ...

yeah. great. So shoot me in the face and tell me others do it so that means it's okay. I hate wireless carriers and the whole wireless system.

Well, it's true that the situation has changed in the year since rigormortis posted the message that you just responded to.

But the discussion was never about T-Mobile phones from T-Mobile being unlocked. Back when the iPhone 6 came out Apple said that T-Mobile phones PURCHASED DIRECTLY FROM APPLE and not on a contract were unlocked. And that was true then, and is true now. iPhones bought from T-Mobile directly were never unlocked, and no one ever said they were.

This policy is already in effect.

Whoever said no one said T-Mobile phones were unlocked is not correct because that was said to me. It was not said that you have to buy them from the Apple store. It was also said to me by the T-Mobile employee.

AT&T phones also work with Verizon as mentioned. I had another 6 Plus on AT&T and I requested unlock online from AT&T and within an hour the phone was unlocked. Wonderful.

Strangely enough the Verizon rep told me that ONLY T-Mobile still locks their phones (cue HAHAHAHAHAHAHA) 🙂 and that neither them nor AT&T locks their phones.

not only is the iPhone 6 unlocked, but the t-mobile phones work on verizon!
