not only is the iPhone 6 unlocked, but the t-mobile phones work on verizon!

if someone makes a youtube video or writes a news story about my post, this time around i really would appreciate some credit. saying rigor mortis from apple discussions' is good enough.

it turns out that the iPhone 6 and 6 plus model numbers #1459 and #1522 are universal. and both have the CDMA radio enabled. However, Sprint models are still separate as far as i know. i did not test Sprint. but as far as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, go , it is the EXACT same phone. i was playing around with my iPhone 6 on launch day. i wanted to see if "ask maggie" was right and the phone was locked to a specific carrier. i tried the T-Mobile and AT&T sims that i had. they do not have service.

however when i inserted my LIVE and ACTIVATED Verizon Sim into my iPhone 6 , my iPhone suddenly became a verizon iPhone. i was able to Place and Receive calls using CDMA, i was able to use DATA services, and i was able to send SMS messages. i assumed that VoLTE was not enabled. and it was not. i assumed

that you had to buy a Verizon model to get Volte. but i was wrong. it just took a while to activate. and i did see use VoLTE in settings, for Voice and DATA

however, since the IMEI and MEID serial numbers are not listed with Verizon, you are not able to either Sign up to verizon, or to transfer service to your new iPhone 6. your service is still tied to your SIM card. and when the iPhone 6 is running and active with your sim card, your device listed on "MY Verizon" will be shown as NON VZW device and it will only show the sim card. but a pre-activated sim card pulling from another device will work in the iPhone 6.

this is just like the iPad Air and the iPad Mini Retina. the only difference between these phones is the serial number is put in some list that tells someone which

carrier it supposed to belong to, and if it is locked or not. and which sim card came with the device. other then that. there are no technical differences between them. except for sprint of course.

whenever i inserted a new sim card into the iPhone 6, it automatically got carrier settings and changed its baseband.

Yes the model number on the box shows A1549 and the part number is MG632LL/A, an indication that its a verizon model. Mine came pre-loaded with the verizon sim in it and i actually tried to activate on Verizon first. Maybe because i didnt activate, thats why i was able to have it working on ATT and T-mobile, x know for sure.

I did read at the beginning of the thread that verizon phone with or without contract, comes unlocked. Mine is one example (though not a normal one) where verizon iphone purchased under contract comes unlocked out of the box.

Sounds like for now, i should just use the phone with Tmobile sim and wait and see if Verizon does eventually send me a bill. Also is there anything that i be wary of or look out for when connecting to Itunes?

I'm the furthest form an expert on iTunes but I had zero issues with mine. The iTunes seems to be completely independent of the carrier in use because I've gone from Verizon to Cricket, and back to Verizon without iTunes appearing to care.

The part I can't figure out is the CDMA functionality (if any) on the T-Mobile phone.

I ordered the unlocked T-Mobile iPhone 6 A1549 and it works fine on Verizon. However, when I try to figure out if it's a A1549 (GSM) or A1549 (CDMA) it's really confusing. On the Apple site it says that it's marked with (GSM) or (CDMA) on the back of the phone, but mine only has A1549 on the back. ...

I've never seen that about what's on the back of the phone on an Apple site; link? My full-price "Verizon" iPhone 6 from an Apple Store says "Model A1549" on the back with no modifier. I removed the Verizon-logo SIM before powering it on, then took it to a T-Mobile store for a SIM and activation.

Here's what I was referring too for identifying which phone model you have:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939

Model number on the back cover:

  • Model A1549 (GSM model)
  • Model A1549 (CDMA model)
  • Model A1586

Then searching around the web I found numerous sites that listed the bands the GSM model worked on and the bands the CDMA model worked on. Hence my confusion because everybody is talking as though there are two completely separate A1549 models.
(borrowed from: http://www.techwalls.com/differences-between-iphone-6-6-plus-models/)

A1549 (GSM): This model is compatible with 4G LTE networks on some major carriers in the US and Canada like AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers (Fido). It supports following LTE bands: 1 (2100 MHz), 2 (1900 MHz), 3 (1800 MHz), 4 (AWS), 5 (850 MHz), 7 (2600 MHz), 8 (900 MHz), 13 (700c MHz), 17 (700b MHz), 18 (800 MHz), 19 (800 MHz), 20 (800 DD), 25 (1900 MHz), 26 (800 MHz), 28 (700 APT MHz) and 29 (700 de MHz). Besides, the GSM version also works on UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz) and GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz).

A1549 (CDMA): This is considered as the world phone version. It supports all the same spectrum frequencies as the A1549 (GSM) and also includes CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (with 800, 1700/2100, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands). Besides, it works on UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz), GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) and 4G LTE bands include bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29. The model is compatible with Verizon and Cricket in the US. However, if you buy an unlocked Verizon phone, you will be able to use it on any other GSM networks like T-Mobile and AT&T as well.

adding on to my last reply:

I just checked my order receipt form Apple and it lists my phone as:

iPhone 6 128GB Space Gray (GSM)

So, I'm curious if what was posted above about the phones all having CDMA capability as accurate or not. Are they the same but it gets disabled when they're locked to a carrier or are there truly two different A1549 hardware models with one having CDMA and one not?

OK. I guess then that Apple's intention with the quoted list of model numbers is that the parentheticals are not actually included on the back cover but only there to provide guidance for readers having seen the parentheticals elsewhere.

As I mentioned above, mine has no parenthetical on the back cover, just "Model A1549". It's a Verizon 16GB Space Grey. The box has a sticker with no model number on it but with a part number of MG5W2LL/A. Another sticker says, in part, "Supports: CDMA, GSM, UTMS, and LTE cellular technologies. ... Some capabilities are not available in all areas and depend on your wireless plan and service provider network."

The radio bands are listed by model -- including parentheticals! -- at http://www.apple.com/iphone-6/specs/. As we've concluded in this thread, those specs are misleading with respect to the actual hardware capabilities, at least if the SIM is not considered as part of the hardware.

Oct 28, 2014 12:35 PM in response to tuwood

it is accurate. I was skeptical so I put my friends Verizon sim in my unlocked 6+ att gsm and everything worked fine (vis voicemail, call to land line, lte voice/data, non lte calling). The cdma is only disabled with the carrier lock. if for some reason it doesn't work for you then just return the phone. Apple has a 14 day no questions return policy.

one thing that should be taken into account is that Verizon will not activate an acct with a non Verizon phone so you would need an existing live/activated verizon micro sim to swap into the phone yourself.

T-mobile unlocked phone works perfectly on my existing Verizon account with sim from my Verizon iPhone 5. Question is.. Am I able to sell my old iPhone 5 on eBay? Or for another person to use it, must it be removed from Verizon account? I am thinking since I am using the MEID from my Verizon iPhone 5, to use my t-mobile iPhone 6+, that I wouldn't be able to sell my old 5. Or is the account tied solely to the SIM card and not the MEID? Any thoughts?

Oct 30, 2014 1:46 PM in response to rigormortis

Great post and thanks for the info. My question is this: Are the locked T-Mobile iPhone 6's (sold by T-Mobile or T-mobile Retailers) the same Model #1549 that would work on Verizon? In other words, say you purchased the iPhone 6 from a T-Mobile dealer, used it for the 40 days like they require and they then unlock it for you, is that model the same as the unlocked T-Mobile version sold by Apple that works on the Verizon network? I think that you answered this question for the most part when you said that the iPhone 6 model #'s are universal, but I am just checking to make sure that that still applies to models sold by T-Mobile itself, or if those, in fact, are actually GSM only versions that don't work on Verizon. The specs found here http://www.apple.com/iphone-6/specs/ seem to contradict the statement, but I am inclined to believe that they are universal, except for Sprint, and are interchangeable. I only ask this question because I am friends with a T-Mobile retailer and can get a T-Mobile iPhone from him, but I imagine that it is locked and cannot be used on Verizon, which I plan to use for the next few months until my contract is up and I can switch to T-Mobile. However, if it were to be unlocked, would it work on Verizon or is it a completely different model WITHOUT CDMA hardware?

Oct 30, 2014 1:54 PM in response to JCat1

So does that mean that once a carrier unlocks the phone, that the CDMA would work? Say you had an iPhone 6 under T-Mobile which you bought from T-Mobile. If T-Mobile unlocks the device (which they will do after 40 days on their service) will that device then become compatible with Verizon, which uses CDMA? I have been searching all over the internet and can't find an answer. I am under the impression, just based on the specs found here (http://www.apple.com/iphone-6/specs/) that the T-Mobile iPhone 6 (sold by a retailer and therefore locked) may in fact be a GSM only phone that would only work with AT&T once unlocked, but I'm hoping that isn't true based on the posts I've read here. Thanks for any info.

The Tmobile version is an exact same version as the Verizon and ATT version except that it's locked to Tmobile if that's purchaseds at the Tmobile store instead of the Apple store.

once you pay off the phone and is on good standing with Tmobile after 40 days, they will unlock the phone for you. At that point, that phone is no different than the Verizon one.

I bought my Tmobile version from Apple store and it's been unlocked from day one and I've been able to use it on Verizon, SK Telecom and KT Telecom (Korea) as well as tested on ATT.

Hope that answers your question.

I have a few questions for you and anyone else. I bought the phone but discovered that my SIM isn't the same size (IPhone 4s), so I cannot swap it out to activate. If I put my husbands nano SIM card in to activate, what happens? Does Verizon switch his phone number and account info to this one? Or does this just activate the phone. If I put a brand new SIM card in his phone does that activate, and then may I put that one into my new IP6? Just considering my options... Thanks

I think I can give definitive answers. I ordered T-Mobile unlocked iPhones from Apple. Both a 6 Plus (model A1522) and a 6 (A1549). I used them both with T-Mobile for a month without any issues. I decided to switch to Verizon, and brought my phones with me. They weren't sold directly from Verizon, so the store reps just activated SIM cards using iPhones in the store. Everything works. LTE, visual voice mail, Voice over LTE, CDMA, everything. The two models I listed above are the exact same models Verizon sells. As long as your devices are unlocked, they will fully work without any issue. (as a side note, if you buy directly from T-Mobile, the phones will NOT be unlocked, even if you pay full price. But if you buy them at full price from Apple on T-Mobile or ATT, they will be fully unlocked and 100% compatible with Verizon.)

The moral is this. Unlocked from from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are all the same device, with the same LTE bands. If you want to know what model you have, look at the back of the phone. If you want to know if your device is unlocked, borrow a SIM from another carrier and pop it in.

Good luck all.

Thats great Jon,

It sounds like you got lucky with your Verizon rep that helped you activate the sim in a Verizon iphone. I suspected that they are all unlocked to a point. I personaky decided to buy a Verizon phone full price from apple to be on the safe side because of the different horror stories I have read and heard from family members and friends on how Verizon will turn away Buisness if the phone is not in their system as a phone made for Verizon despite the hardware and software with the iPhone being exactly the same. When I go to switch I may not be as lucky as you were so I didn't want to risk it.

so for now the Verizon phone runs and finishes it my Att contract :-)

Got a T-Mobile iPhone 6 from T-Mobile, waited 40 days, requested unlock. Unlock instructions from T-Mobile did not work as indicated--iTunes never indicated that the phone had been unlocked. T-Mobile support said that the instructions come from the manufacturer, and it's out of their hands. Went to Apple to get it unlocked and a Genius tried an unactivated Verizon SIM to prove that it was unlocked. They gave me the SIM in case I wanted it, since it was already punched out of its card.

Went to Verizon store and tried to activate it, but they were largely unhelpful. They said they had no iPhone 6 that could be used to activate my SIM. New ones in the package were not an option. Adding this device's IMEI to the Verizon database was also not possible. They suggested I find someone with an iPhone 6 on Verizon or even try an iPhone 5 because it uses the same size SIM. I'm thinking I would want to activate it on someone's Verizon iPhone 6 and not a 5 to ensure all the services are activated properly in Verizon's systems (e.g. Voice over LTE, etc.).

not only is the iPhone 6 unlocked, but the t-mobile phones work on verizon!
