Q: not only is the iPhone 6 unlocked, but the t-mobile phones work on verizon!

if someone makes a youtube video or writes a news story about my post, this time around i really would appreciate some credit.  saying rigor mortis  from apple discussions' is good enough.

it turns out that the iPhone 6 and 6 plus model numbers #1459 and #1522 are universal. and both have the CDMA radio enabled. However, Sprint models are still separate as far as i know. i did not test Sprint. but as far as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, go , it is the EXACT same phone. i was playing around with my iPhone 6 on launch day. i wanted to see if "ask maggie" was right and the phone was locked to a specific carrier. i tried the T-Mobile and AT&T sims that i had. they do not have service.

however when i inserted my LIVE and ACTIVATED Verizon Sim into my iPhone 6 , my iPhone suddenly became a verizon iPhone. i was able to Place and Receive calls using CDMA, i was able to use DATA services, and i was able to send SMS messages. i assumed that VoLTE was not enabled. and it  was not. i assumed

that you had to buy a Verizon model to get Volte. but i was wrong. it just took a while to activate. and i did see use VoLTE in settings, for Voice and DATA

however, since the IMEI and MEID serial numbers are not listed with Verizon, you are not able to either Sign up to verizon, or to transfer service to your new iPhone 6. your service is still tied to your SIM card. and when the iPhone 6 is running and active with your sim card, your device listed on "MY Verizon" will be shown as NON VZW device and it will only show the sim card. but a pre-activated sim card pulling from another device will work in the iPhone 6.

this is just like the iPad Air and the iPad Mini Retina. the only difference between these phones is the serial number is put in some list that tells someone which

carrier it supposed to belong to, and if it is locked or not. and which sim card came with the device. other then that. there are no technical differences between them. except for sprint of course.

whenever i inserted a new sim card into the iPhone 6, it automatically got carrier settings and changed its baseband.

Can a At&t phone that has not been unlocked though the carrier because the owner did not fulfill her commitment to pay for it be activated by inserting a Verizon Sim card into it and turning it on.

    No.

Has anyone bought a Tmobile Iphone and activated it on Verizon and been able to use the Personal Hotspot without paying extra?

I'm sorry if this is ignorant because i haven't read thru every comment, but i have an iPhone 6 128gb thats brand new and paid in full purchased in august. my problem is i cannot stand sprint service anymore and would like to switch to Verizon, but they've said this is not possible. i know they are just trying to get me to buy a new phone. the question is how do i make this work? I've read enough of these comments to know switching phone carriers on the same phone is possible. somebody please enlighten me!!

No, they are telling you this because it is not possible.
Sprint phone will not work on Verizon.

Sell your Sprint phone and get a new one with Verizon.

As long as it is not Sprint to Verizon, it may be possible

If it is Sprint to Verizon, it is not possible.

    somebody please enlighten me!!

    Done!

That's why Sprint cell phones sell for less on eBay.        Your best bet is to sell the phone on eBay. I bought a T-Mobile iPhone 6 Plus from the Apple store not under contract.  I was able to use a Sim card from an older Verizon phone in my iPhone six and it works. Verizon will not activate a phone that they did not sell.

The best thing you can do is find a friend who is a Verizon iPhone and put his Sim card in your phone and see what happens.

I can confirm what rigor mortis reported is true.

I walked in to VZW today because I wanted to switch from T-mobile.  I have a iPhone 6, 64GB, unlocked phone that was bought with T-Mobile. Before I made the switch I paid off the phone and requested an unlock code.  After unlocking my T-Mobile iPhone everything was easy.  Ported my number to verizon, and told them I wanted to use my current iPhone as it's unlocked.  The first sales rep told me that it wouldn't work, so I asked to speak to her manager.  I told them manager that my phone is unlocked and that if you put a Verizon SIM card into the phone, it will work. He was speechless when it actually worked.

Everything works.  Visual Voicemail, VoLTE, data, and calls.  When you log-into My Verizon on their website, your phone will be listed as a "non-vzw device".  Big deal.  Everything works! Don't let Verizon lie to you. As long as your iPhone is unlocked, and anything BUT Sprint, all you need is a Verizon SIM card and everything will work.

As you will find over time everything will NOT work. If you travel to an area without LTE coverage where only CDMA is available, or to a "partner" network, the phone will not work. If you want to enable International roaming features, you will not be able to. SMS will not work reliably, and MMS probably will not work at all. There's plenty of evidence from other users that everything does not work. Some things work. But if something doesn't work Verizon will not help you resolve it.

    Lawrence,

For me anyway, SMS, and iMessage work fine.  MMS works, as I can reply to group texts with android users and apple users, as well as receive pictures. I'm in NYC so service so far has been spectacular.  Will need to see if the signal stays strong once leaving the metro area.  That was the main reason I wanted to switch to VZW in the first place.

    Hi,

I was on Verizon and left it because T-mobile was so much cheaper.  What I didn't know was T-mobile will not work in the area in which I work or live.  They kept saying a tower was down, until the 14 days were over to return it.

I took my iPhone 6+ (model A1522 GSM version T-mobile) in to Verizon and they tried everything to get it to work on Verizon.  Two of the workers took their own sims out of their iphones and tried to get it to work.  I took my sons t-mobile 5s in because it used to be a verizon phone, and it worked immediately.  Do you know if your phone was an A1522 CDMA, or A1522 GSM?  I have read on some sites that both A1522 models support 4-bands GSM, and five-band CDMA2000.  Is there no way I can get my iphone to change over to Verizon short of selling it and buying a new phone?

Probably not. However, the trade-in value Verizon gives you should be pretty close to the price of a new phone. You may be able to get more selling it yourself but that might be somewhat less convenient.
