Q: not only is the iPhone 6 unlocked, but the t-mobile phones work on verizon!

if someone makes a youtube video or writes a news story about my post, this time around i really would appreciate some credit.  saying rigor mortis  from apple discussions' is good enough.

it turns out that the iPhone 6 and 6 plus model numbers #1459 and #1522 are universal. and both have the CDMA radio enabled. However, Sprint models are still separate as far as i know. i did not test Sprint. but as far as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, go , it is the EXACT same phone. i was playing around with my iPhone 6 on launch day. i wanted to see if "ask maggie" was right and the phone was locked to a specific carrier. i tried the T-Mobile and AT&T sims that i had. they do not have service.

however when i inserted my LIVE and ACTIVATED Verizon Sim into my iPhone 6 , my iPhone suddenly became a verizon iPhone. i was able to Place and Receive calls using CDMA, i was able to use DATA services, and i was able to send SMS messages. i assumed that VoLTE was not enabled. and it  was not. i assumed

that you had to buy a Verizon model to get Volte. but i was wrong. it just took a while to activate. and i did see use VoLTE in settings, for Voice and DATA

however, since the IMEI and MEID serial numbers are not listed with Verizon, you are not able to either Sign up to verizon, or to transfer service to your new iPhone 6. your service is still tied to your SIM card. and when the iPhone 6 is running and active with your sim card, your device listed on "MY Verizon" will be shown as NON VZW device and it will only show the sim card. but a pre-activated sim card pulling from another device will work in the iPhone 6.

this is just like the iPad Air and the iPad Mini Retina. the only difference between these phones is the serial number is put in some list that tells someone which

carrier it supposed to belong to, and if it is locked or not. and which sim card came with the device. other then that. there are no technical differences between them. except for sprint of course.

whenever i inserted a new sim card into the iPhone 6, it automatically got carrier settings and changed its baseband.

    So, here is more info.

I have been unable to get "Voice & Data" (aka VOLTE) on my iPhone 6, Tmobile, purchased at Apple Store for Full Retail.

I happen to have a Verizon iPhone 6 Plus for Verizon available to me.  I plugged in my active VZ SIM and I was able enabled "Voice & Data" and I disabled WiFi and sure enough, I was able to make a call and data at the same time.  Now, I am thinking I have the "Advanced Calling 1.0" enabled on my account, because a VZW Phone 6 enabled and touched my account.  I removed the SIM and put it on the iPhone 6 TMobile (full retail @ Apple store), where I previously was not able to enable.  VOLTE now works, "Voice & Data" is enabled and I have confirmed that I can make a call and do data at the same time.  Other way to check is disable WiFi, make a phone call and if "LTE" is still displayed, you are making a voice call over LTE.

BUT, as a workaround, if you are unable to use VOLTE and have access to a different iPhone - this does enable it.

So now that I have it working, I wonder at some point in the future, if Verizon will notice this isn't a "Verizon ESN" and disable this feature.

Update - I have access to two iPhone 6 (6 & 6 Plus) and now both work, but it required me to insert my active SIM into a VZ "branded" iphone 6 in order to add the service to my line.

I'm not sure how is it that the unlock works, it's possible that it was already unlocked before you activated it with Tmobile. I purchased the 6 online and picked it up in the Apple store on 14th street in NYC. I took out the Tmobile sim before I even turned the phone on, popped in my AT&T sim and turned it on. Voila, it was unlocked.

Have you actually tried putting in non tmobile sim? If you do and the phone is still locked to Tmobile, then this confirms my theory that you cannot activate the phone with Tmobile or they will lock it. If it works then feel free to cancel that Tmobile line and use whatever company you please. It may have been different with the 5 and 5S, I'm not sure, but with the 6 and the 6 plus, the phones do come unlocked from Tmobile, but only if bought directly from Apple.

This was my worry too, which is why I just went ahead and bought a Verizon model. I was afraid that they would cancel my service after a while if they realized I was using a non Verizon phone. Although, I still am a bit worried that they might contact me because I never activated the phone with postpaid, I simply put in my prepaid sim. Apple for some reason, will not deny or confirm if you HAVE to activate the phone with the carrier. I'm just glad I was able to get the last Verizon model in stock at the store at full price without having to activate with Verizon postpaid.

We have a Verizon 6 plus phone that we are using in the T Mobile network. It works flawlessly, LTE, visual voicemail, wifi calling are all available.

    Hi bsnpilot

May i know where you bought the Verizon Ip6 and if you paid full price or subsidized price?

I am planning to get a Verizon Iphone 6 on contract and then move to T-mobile but wasnt sure if it was unlocked to be used on T-mobile without any limitation on features. I thought i read that to use wifi calling it needs to be on a T-mobile purchased device (hopefully not true).

    thanks

I just received my full priced, T-Mobile iPhone 6 this evening and popped my already activated (was in my iPhone 5) Verizon SIM in the phone. So far, I am seeing "No Service" and for a brief moment Verizon with only 1 dot.

Am I doing something wrong? I took the SIM back out, placed it in my old iPhone 5 and confirmed it was working.

I am having the same problem -- has Verizon just blocked the usage of new unlocked iPhone 6s? I have an iPhone 6 Plus that I bought last week internationally, fully unlocked, and when I tried to use it in the US today with a fully activated Verizon SIM card and it went to "No Service" after showing "Verizon LTE" for about 5 seconds. I tried my friend's Verizon SIM and same result. The two SIMs work fine in our Verizon iPhone 5s. Sigh...

How is this correct, when the A1549 GSM model (unlocked T-Mobile) doesn't list that it supports any CDMA bands?

Wow....just got a lesson on apple, verizon, and tmobile.  They all want your money and offer worthless options.  Basically force you into a new contract.  Tmobile wants you for 7 days before they will unlock your phone from apple...supposedly.  Apple wants $1000 for a phone that only works with one junk network.  Verizon will only let you use a iphone if you buy it from them.

well....I say screw all of you.  all greedy companies that want more more and more.

I can't believe the trouble I've been through trying to get a phone activated.  Keep your electronic crap.

Just another disgusted verizon and apple customer. Good job taking care of your long time customers..

I would love to agree with you, but your claims are not accurate.

If you buy tmobile version from apple store, the phone is NOT LOCKED. i don't know where you are getting the information from, but i've personally tested it and I'm using Tmobile phone that i bought from US apple store with KT telecom here in Korea. I've put in ATT & Verizon sim and the phone works just fine. I've never put tmobile sim in my iphone 6 since i bought it.

So your claim of apple selling you a phone for $1000 for a network that only works on a junk network, it simply isn't true.

Verizon has always been for the past who knows how long only allowed phone bought from them to work on their network. While i agree that it's a total BS, but you are getting mad at something that has been the norm and something that Sprint is also doing with far inferior network.

I don't know if Verizon changed their policy recently, but if you take a look at my previous post, I was able to get the Tmobile iphone6 on Verizon with full VOLTE working. I can't confirm at this point if that's still the case, but it was working before.

I Just spent all day and night trying to get these companies to activate my phone.  I don't have a iphone 5 sim to stick in.

Past practice doesn't make it right.

    Hi,

That's because you cannot activate a non Verizon phone with Verizon. In order for it to work, you need to have a pre activated Verizon sim, meaning that you were using it on a Verizon branded phone before you put in in the unlocked iPhone 6.

As for the T-mobile version, people have already stated and I can confirm as well, if you buy it directly from Apple, it will be unlocked. Don't activate it with Tmobile. I'm not sure if Tmobile locks it if you activate it, but if your intention is to buy a Tmobile version from Apple the phone will be fully unlocked, just don't use the Tmobile sim inside.

If you buy the phone from Tmobile or possibly other resellers like best buy or target, the phone will be locked to Tmobile and will have to meet their unlock requirements.

If you buy the Verizon model, it will be unlocked regardless of whether it's a contract or not. I was able to buy a Verizon model at full price without activating a plan and contract. I just popped in my prepaid sim and walked out the store with my unlocked Verizon phone.
