Q: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgrade

After IOS 8 upgrade many aplications ( Safari, Facebook, etc) load  very, very slow (comparing with 7 version) , with a significant delay of more than 10 seconds...

Who can I solve this problem? Any workaround?

PD

Apple should better test the software before delivering.

Thanks.

It's unfortunate to see that nobody read any reviews beforehand or if they did, just installed the update anyway.

As you'll notice below, I tend to skip most OS releases

I sent out a warning, in email, and posted it on my blog which is read by thousands of people and hundreds of our clients... "DO NOT UPGRADE"....

They did it anyway....    My business was swamped with phone calls and tickets that were started asking us for help.

There was one case of a business owner who said that they saw my email and my blog post but upgraded because Apple offered it and it had to be better.

We had hundreds of calls and tickets.

We were down to 22 tickets of over 400 on December 1st, when I closed them all out.

This is a well knowned issue : http://www.theipadguide.com/faq/should-i-upgrade-my-ipad-2-ios-8

Here are different solutions to fix the problem: http://www.iphonetopics.com/ipad-2-vey-slow-issue-ios-8/

I think that the Solution 6 is the better:  Reinstalling iOS 7 and wait until Apple solves the problem with a forthcoming upgrade of  iOS8 for the iPad 2

I have been a long term Apple user. Macs, laptops, IPhones, IPods, Apple TV and so on. For the first time since I started spending my money on Apple, I have decided to STOP using an Apple product, because the performance level has dropped significantly, and I experience many of the complaints above, on various devices. Basically, at home, I use the Internet as many do, for work. Until about three weeks ago, I used Safari. Previously, I had 20 Gb broadband and wireless, but after various upgrades, Safari on all devices seemed to be getting slower and slower. The Pad, which had a significant amount of use, was the worst. It would often crash, or simply stop and require a reboot. Tolerance levels reached an all time low, so I have decided to replace safari on the Mac with Mozilla Firefox. Problem solved. On  the IPad, there I s no version of Mozilla Firefox for IOS yet, so currently I am trying out different browsers, and performance is better. Currently I am using Mercury, but if Mozilla release a version of Firefox for IOS then I will move to that. Apple need to smell the coffee, and realise their products are starting to lose the position they previously held, as those of first choice.

BTW, I even upgraded to 50Gb fibre optic broadband, but due to safari problems saw no improvement. Now with Firefox, I am finally benefitting from the broadband speeds. Sorry Apple, but it appears since the sad demise of Steve Jobs, some of your products have become third rate, which they never were before.

AAnd this is why I am no longer replacing my apple devices with new Apple devices.  I should not have to research an upgrade, and I use that term loosely, to see if it will kill my device.  I was a loyalist briefly before I got tired of closed systems, no way to upgrade desktops to my liking, and update shenanigans.  I replaced my iPhone with an S5 this time around and it's been a dream.  I replaced my Mac with a home built PC that blows any Mac out of the water for the same price and I can customize to my hearts content.  People are buying a trendy brand in Apple.  That trend is over for me.

Then why are you still in the Apple Forums? Working for Microsoft or Samsung?

Because I still use an IPAD 2 for the use of foreflight, which has no worthy competitor.  Therefore I am apple forums trying to figure out if there is anyway to fix my device that is nearly unusable after an update.  But thanks for asking.

this is ridiculous but it worked for me and I found it in the forum (many many pages back) , but did not bookmark it so I'm going from memory now...

    close all apps

    open safari

open multiple tabs, at least 6, with different websites on each

pinch the screen to change the into a table format

select on of the web windows to restore it to full screen

perform a hard boot (home key plus power button)

seriously..that was it.  no more hanging with safari or Facebook.  I think it is still slightly slower than it used to be (pre upgrade), but VERY useable now, barely noticeable

    good luck

I just blundered in to this thread after weeks of trying to resolve these problems on my iPad 2. iOS 8 left it crawling on Safari. Very slow page loads. I ended up installing the Puffin browser and calling it a day. That solved my main problem. But when 8.1.1 came out, to supposedly improve iPad 2 performance, the Puffin browser crashes. I have been through this with tech support and they had me run a diagnostic that reveled my hardware is fine. Since they were unable at Apple to admit it is an OS issue they suggested it was a corrupted download or an non-Apple app responsible.

After trying all of the settings suggestions to no avail, I ended up wiping the iPad completely. Reinstalling the OS as a new iPad. Lost all of my settings, bookmarks, etc. Did not have one single non-Apple app on the device. When I open Safari and go from one website to another it drags like a wounded animal. I reinstalled Puffin and it crashes. Basically I cannot use it on the internet. Curious thing is my wife has the exact same 1st generation iPad 2 and did not upgrade to 7. It works perfectly.

One thing I suspect is that the current generation of iPad 2s do not run the same chipset as the first version. This accounts for why the new ones are not having the same problems. The IT guys at work say this is the problem. The 1st generation iPad 2 can RUN OS 8, but not well. It is an elephant riding a dog ,was how they explained it to me. Apple tech support suggested that I could jailbreak mine if I want to downgrade to OS7. But they are not going to admit the problem or allow people to go back to 7. I feel strongly that this is mistake on their part.

This does make me less likely to buy another iPad. I feel strongly that Apple should allow people to revert to OS7 and that I should not have to spend hours and hours on the internet trying to get my device to work again, as well as it did two months ago.

FYI- Talked to apple support (it's free for 30 days after any software update) and was escalated to phone support. I was told that it must be a hardware problem and would need to buy a new ipad. Also that they are very active on the community forums and haven't seen any issues/complaints about the upgrade causing problems on the ipad 2. Also the tech support said that "her kids have ipad 2's and they work fine".

So if you're within 30 days, light up the chat and phone support to let them know that there is in fact, an issue.

Well that is a ridiculous statement. How long did it take you to fabricate that? Which leads to the question is ANY of your information correct?

Well the senior advisor I talked to "Chelsea" said every one of those things, including that her son and daughter both have ipad 2's and they're working fine. She said the engineers are very on top of complaints and if there were any, they would have fixed them. Also that "millions" of people upgraded without issue. The only thing that could be wrong is the hardware on our ipad 2, according to Chelsea.

I am not a liar, but I think apple support was lying to me.

I don't doubt you because I also heard from a tech support person that Apple does indeed read these forums, and they do make notes from them.  However, I was told they were "aware that some people were experiencing difficulties" or something along those lines.

You would have to be an idiot to believe that Apple would provide forums, which they did not have personnel checking 8-)
