Q: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgrade

After IOS 8 upgrade many aplications ( Safari, Facebook, etc) load  very, very slow (comparing with 7 version) , with a significant delay of more than 10 seconds...

 

Who can I solve this problem? Any workaround?

Apple should better test the software before delivering.

    I had a Samsung S2 before my iPhone, felt lucky to be rid of the S2, but now I'm chomping at the bit to be with ANYONE other than Apple, for EVERYTHING.

     

    Apple, I liked my iPad 2 so much that you actually had this 15 year PC-head looking forward to getting his first Mac! Now?... No way!!!

    Settings>General>Accessibility>Reduce Motion turn "On"

     

    Doing this single change has made my iPad2 more responsive on 8.0.2

     

    I noticed that the parallax effect was chugging when I moved the iPad or after exiting an application, so I tried disabling the feature and I don't have the sluggishness now.

    Have just done this as well and it has  made more difference than any other fix suggested. Still cross with Apple though for letting this all happen. We are a totally Apple family and I was thinking of shifting my company to Macs but not so sure now

    I have written on this thread but would like to update my comments. After changing some settings, it is better. Not how I want it, but better. After reading all the comments it appears that other companies seem to have the same issues after a few seasons of upgrades and improvements. I will stick with Apple products. I will, perhaps, not upgrade so quickly next time one is offered. I have an iPhone 4 still as it meets all my needs but I won't be updating that to iOS 8. It is too late for the iPad. Going back to 7 seems like too much work.

    I'm having to dust of my 10yr old laptop just to browse web pages! My ipad2 is now useless, thanks Apple!

    I have done many of the recommended changes to my I-Pad that have been posted here. In the short term, it appears to have sped things up. We'll see if it holds through random and pointed uses.

     

    Apple offers all of these new 'awesome' additions to the experience and I end up having to disable much of it just to get back to a basic form of utility...but hey, I have the "latest" version!

    I have spend a week with Apple customer service escalation on this issue and my two-year-old iPad 2 + 3G, and have discovered that Apple no longer supports the "legacy" devices on IOS 8.0.2. Apple's response is, "Wait and see," and "What do you expect for free tech support."

    Does anyone know if the wireless Apple keyboard works with other tablet brands? It might be time to upgrade.

    Mine is working just fine.

     

    Please tell me that your unit has NEVER been jailbroke.  If it has not been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:

     

    First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...

    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.

     

    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

     

    At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.

     

    If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

    I'm not "quick to judge" - I've been working with Apple tech support and customer service for a week. Their response is that I should buy a newer device. They're very sorry, and they hope I have a nice day.

    I've been an Apple user since I switched from PCs in 2003. Half of my office is Apple and half is PC. the PCs are cheap and buggy, but our IT people can fix anything that goes wrong. Apple products are expensive and rick solid until Apple f***s them up, and then their response is vapid assurances of doing everything they can to hep but no help.

    I'm too old for this crap, and there are too many competitors out there. I'll give them until 8.0.3 to fix my iPad and then I'll buy a competitor, or just go back to a laptop.

    It's not a threat- Apple has nothing to fear from me. I'm one of hundreds of millions, and my failure to buy a new iPad won't affect them in the least. I'm just voicing my frustration with a company that has gotten my support and tens of thousands of my dollars over the past 11 years and exhibits no loyalty to the customer. The products have always been good but the customer service has always been hit or miss. I'll still buy Apple computers, and I currently have 7 iPhones, but the bloom is off the rose, and you just need to read the rest of the comments on this string to see that I'm not alone.

    Like others, my iPad 2 (16 Gb, wi-fi only) is just not the same as it was under iOS 7. I am running iOS 8.0.2

     

    Here's a list of steps that I've taken that have improved matters, though I still have trouble clicking through to hyperlinks on Safari.

     

    Go to Settings

         Spotlight search

              turn off as many as you can

         Accessibility

              turn off everything EXCEPT "Reduce motion" -- turn that ON

         Background App Refresh

              turn off

         Keyboard

              turn auto-correction off

              turn split keyboard off

    ------

    Wallpaper

         use some still, not dynamic

    -----

    Privacy

         Location services

              turn this off for all apps you can

         Share my location

              turn off

         Contacts

              turn this off for all apps you can

         Photos

              turn this off for all apps you can

         Microphone

              turn this off for all apps you can

    -----

    iCloud

         turn this off for all apps you can

              turn share my location OFF

    iTunes and App Store

         Automatic Downloads

              turn off all that you can (I leave only app updates turned on)

    -----

    Safari

         Preload top hit

              turn off

         Don not track

              turn on

         Fraudulent website warning

              turn on

    -----

     

    After changing all of these settings, do a hard reset (hold the power button and the home button in for ~8 seconds). Let it boot up and reconnect, then repeat the hard boot once or twice again. I hope that you will find that your trusty iPad 2 is at least functional, if not a match before it got trashed with iOS 8.

     

    So now my iPad is working at a level I consider marginal. But why Apple's engineers could not foresee these problems I don't know. Perhaps they're all kitted out with brand-new iPads, or they tested out iOS 8 on virgin iPad 2s that had not been loaded up with apps and contacts and such. In any case, I certainly will not be jumping on the Apple update bandwagon ever again. Instead I'm shopping around for what Samsung now has to offer. I know Android is not without it problems, but, after all the pre-release about iOS 8, I find Apple's behavior quite obnoxious. The company should be acknowledging that this was a screw-up and that they are going to provide their customers with a real fix or with a way back to iOS 7. And I don't mean just a re-install of iOS 7 (which would require re-installing all apps, settings, et cetera) but a way of going back to iOS 7 and then being able to use a backup created under iOS 8 to bring my machine back to where it was on September 16th.

    SSo as a conscenes ... (I love how my new updated keyboard loves to add a double letter at the start of my sentences by the way) it appears the vast majority of iPad2 users have considerable issues due to Apple's latest release of IOS8 and its further failed upgrades.

     

    To my own laughter, the only solutions that have had minimal effects on improving performance is for the user to basically manually go through every setting available and turn things off. Thus the end result is a blank screen, that responds to your touch producing further blank screens at a speed not quite as fast as your iPad previously ran (with multiple ACTUAL apps running) but fast enough that you feel compelled to maintain your loyalty to Apple because you love Steve Jobs.

     

    if a car company sold you a car and said you would get 45 mpg then a couple years later upgraded the software to that car resulting in your car now getting 25 mpg ... Said car company would be run out of business in hours. My iPad2 64GB WIFI ran awesome till Apples amazingly pathetic upgrade turned it into a brick.. Where is the legal outcries to hold Apple responsible for degrading our iPads in an effort to make us buy newer, shinier ones???

     

    I Guess we are supposed to be happy that it looks nice ... sitting on the table ... as long as we don't use it.

     

    why has Apple just not stepped up and permitted iPad2 users the ability to revert back to IOS7? I suspect they could have simply said iPad2 users would be prevented the IOS8 upgrade and made us live with that.

    Agree.  Very slow, freezes, touch screen issues......I have lost confidence in Apple!
