Nov 9, 2014 12:36 PM in response to lesliefromstockton-on-teesby Maxipeg,Thanks, that confirms that
1. there is an issue
2. that it can not be fully taken care of...
- not after resetting the device to factory settings
- not by an Apple Genius
therefore, in my opinion, the best advice would be to wait until 8.1.1. and stop wasting time and human resources with futile attempts to have the problem fixed.

Nov 9, 2014 1:02 PM in response to Star Travelerby matteos72,Hi Star Traveller
Thanks for your
Of course this is a personal rule, not with a strong theoretical basis like the Moore Law but after 5 years living with several Apple Devices I founded this rule of thumbs working well, also because several friends moved to newer iOS complained a lot about drastic slow down of performances of their devices.
On iPAD2 I cannot say if it works well or not with iOS8 but this sis my choice not to migrate. After have been really disappointed for the hard drop of performances of my iPhone 4 when I have migrated from iOS 6 to iOS7 I prefer now not to take the risk
Of course you can argue what the **** I am doing with a 4 years old telephone... maybe I do not have today a budget of 900€ to buy iPhone 6But anyway... I think Apple should prevent users with old hardware that migrating can slow down performance. Engineers knows Moore lAws. Normal user not. and at least you should give the choice if do or not.
Ideally Apple should provide the option to move back to the old OS if an user is disappointed (would be possible by the way?)
Honestly speaking I like Apple's product much more than other. But I was not happy about this "bad experience" I had with my iPhone4 when I migrate to iOS6. Really. In one day I drastically reduced performances. Even make a phone call was difficult!
Apple should always offer the best customer experience to their user. Happy user will spend money for new product.
I have the impression every time new iOS is developed Apple simply hope everybody migrate. So the one who have old hardware frustrated by the bad performances will decide maybe to buy new device. But this is not happy customer.
I am not sure if Steve Jobs would have appreciated this "bad experience" service to the customer.
Ciao

Nov 9, 2014 1:52 PM in response to Star Travelerby Skooty Alan,I think it hardly a blip on the radar when no one I know has an iPad2 that works satisfactorily on IOS8. Although, I am not aware of anyone else who has lost all their iBook PDFs. Guess I was just unlucky!!

Nov 9, 2014 1:59 PM in response to Skooty Alanby JohnMHoyt,You are not alone in the iBook department. Someone else had mentioned that on this forum (you?) and I had not heard of it, until last week, when I was mentioning it at a staff meeting of a lawfirm we handle. Darned if they said they had lost not just a few files (like I lost notes, and even iTunes songs), but every one of the documents they had. They didn't know it until I mentioned it was a possibility and boom! Out of about 15 people in a meeting, 5 had iPad 2s (including me) and 3 had lost documents... The remaining 1 didn't use them so they lost nothing.
It's funny how when you are telling people there MAY be problems with their iPad 2/3/mini with iOS 8x, and they start in with the "I'm not experiencing any problems at all", then when you describe how the exact issue and ask them to check if they are having it, showing them how to duplicate an issue or what to look for, and magically, they start noticing it. They then want it fixed. Rightfully so.
I have absolutely no fix for the lost documents, because in the 3 people I have encountered personally with this problem, there's simply no help. The data is GONE. It's not in the cloud, it's not on their computer. YEARS of data - just lost.

Maybe a Data Recovery Firm can recover it.

I have the SAME FIX for lost documents that I've had for over 30+ years ... and that is called BACKUPS!!
It's been said that there are only two kinds of computer users (and that pertains to iOS users, too) ... those who have lost data, and those who haven't lost it YET!
The first thing you do before you start keeping data on any device or computer is that you check and verify your backup procedures!! I can't overemphasize this enough!
Here are some Apple Support documents on backups and which things are saved and which are not. There are more ways than this ... though ... To take care of data to backup. Some can be as simple as e-mailing yourself files and maybe doing so to a couple of different e-mail accounts for redundancy.

yes, and when I tried to recover a back up from iTunes I did get the silhouette of the docs briefly and then they vanished. So, the iTunes backup is not working, or at least it will not recover docs saved under IOS7 with IOS8. Very frustrating, and yes years of data. I always assumed I could trust the iTunes backup.
have you tried to restore docs from backup?

It t's definitely is TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE!
Maybe a Data Recovery Firm can recover it.
There are some software programs for the desktop computer which will interact with an iOS device and recover deleted files (or lost ones).

Nov 9, 2014 2:21 PM in response to petermac87by Skooty Alan,MMy documents were all backed up on iTunes but the restore does not work. Very frustrating. So, I can understand the frustration of others. It seems that IOS8 is bringing wider implications than just poor performance. Anyone else lost docs in iBooks? Anyone found a solution?

I have double and triple backups, depending on which data I'm talking about. Also, there needs to be periodic checks on the operation of restoral. This is one of the SUPER CRITICAL AREAS for a user to be familiar with!

That's exactly the case with the 3 people I spoke with. They trusted itunes backups, but they failed them. Which is true of my own notes which I have lost for good..... I can live without my notes, I just want the speed back and the copy/paste functioning, and the apps to stop wigging out =)

Yep! I'm the same way, in fact, with our business, the server is backed up to an onsite NAS, that nas is backed up to an identical one in a data center, and we use a cloud backup (Servosity) on top of that, then we have a redundant server on site, which is rsync'd to one at my home. That seems to work well for us.
But my iPad, like my clients, was only backed up to iTunes (cloud and computer)... The geniuses cannot get the data back for me, and my clients have been unable to restore their's as well...

Agreed! Prior to iOS 8, I had restored my backup to another iPad, and it worked great.... (while I was replacing the screen on mine, I used a spare I had)... Just as it was supposed to. It was only after iOS 8.0.0 was installed and later 8.0.1, 8.0.2 and now 8.1 that I even realized that certain notes (not all of mine, just a large majority) are gone. Multiple restore attempts from the computer, and from the cloud, not all the notes.
Fortunately, again, some of the lost ones are also on my Microsoft Exchange server, and not just entrusted to Apple... Those were easy to get back, but alas, not all of them were there. They will be next time. Again, it's not a huge deal with my own notes.
